http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/education-19349444 Damned if you do, damned if you don't. I wish people would make up their minds about what they actually want. When teachers and pupils are told the only thing that matters is exam performance , never mind developing the whole child, being happy and the other stuff that education used to be about, and concentrate on cramming, exam technique and improving grades, guess what? grades improve. Are people delighted with that? No, it's 'grade inflation' and has made qualifications worthless. Now there has been a drop in grades, expect schools to be punished for under performing

On Radio 5 they were talking to a couple of girls who had taken 47 GCSEs between them and got about 35 A* grades. I shall be having words with Grace 3, when she gets back from France, as to why she didn't sit 24 - I think she only did about 10. Results are being sent in the post - how antiquated is that? - and we're under strict instructions not to open the letter until she gets back next Tuesday. Might try and do it on Skype. She did get an A in her 'AS' French, which is good for self-esteem, but probably not much else, as she's planning to take the International Baccalaureate rather than 'A' levels. |

'Baccalaureate', isn't that some sort of dried, salted cod? |

Sorry, rum, but the comic effect for which I assume you're striving is lost on me - there's probably some food reference of which I'm unaware. Grace 3 cracked last night and asked us to open her results letter. Not as good as she was hoping for - only one A* - but not as bad as she feared - only one B (in the dreaded Maths). |

http://steamykitchen.com/20173-bacalao-salt-cod-with-potatoes-rice-recipe.html Sorry, Tick. 'Only one A*', sounds like expectations were sky high. Spare a thought for those on the margins where certain Cs are now Ds. Edited by rumbaba, Aug 25 2012, 12:42 PM.

Hardly sky high, rum. Lots of people get a clutch of A*s and quite a few get all A*s: our Grace was hoping for three or four, perhaps, and probably expecting at least a couple. Thanks for the bacalao recipe, sounds nice. |

Good luck to Grace Tick. I hope she has the grades for what she wants to do. |

... or Gove puppet, for that matter. I recall one of my teachers many years ago being asked by an anxious pupil/student: 'But what do we need to learn to get through the exam?' To which his reply was: 'Once you stop asking questions like that, there's a chance you might start your education.' Edited by chris crossing, Aug 26 2012, 08:14 AM.

Sadly, teachers like that are being forced out of the profession. It's all short term, results driven now

I listened to 'Gove' this morning. By some miracle my radio escaped violence. The little 'sh*t' really makes me angry. |

Too true ..... smugly refusing to say he'd do anything about the clear injustice of the January/June marking fiasco ...... quite wrong to interfere etc. while he tampers with the education system according to his nostalgia whims ........ and using the question to rubbish GCSE and boost his backward Final Exam proposals ...... the little squirt. |
