Brilliant! I've got a lot of old John Peel programmes on cassette which I still listen to at times when I'm driving. These date from the 80s and 90s, I didn't listen to him much in the later years.

I've also got some earlier recordings from the 70s but as these are on reel to reel tapes and my tape deck doesn't work properly, I'm unable to play them.

I'll have a go at downloading a few, see what sort of quality they are.

The SoundCloud player has now been removed - no doubt by the BBC for copyright reasons grrrrr!

However the individual Peel recordings can still be accessed at http://soundcloud.com/search?q[fulltext]=John%20Peel%20Show%20%2BdB

Looks like the individual recordings have now been removed as well. This morning I managed to download c35 complete recordings before they disappeared, not helped by an intermittent broadband connection.

I thought late last night that I really should sit up through the night to download all of them but I didn't.

I used to like listening to John Peel in the very early days, he played a lot of good stuff that would never had been played on the radio otherwise. Unfortunately, later on, he played a lot of rubbish that should never have been played on the radio or anywhere else. I tried a number of times to listen to his late night show and it was, literally, unlistenable. I suspect it became a bit of a pose with him, as he sought to retain his 'rebel' credentials against the cosyness of his 'Home Truths' show. He liked the idea of punk, people who couldn't really play 'having a go'. There is so much good stuff out there that never gets heard it seemed such a shame that he appeared to favour industrial noise and people banging dustbins with a monkey wrench. Maybe I was just unlucky but I gave up in the end.
