I seem to be absolutely addicted to Justin Bieber's latest single "As long as you love me"... It's soo stupidly addictive!... *Waits for all the JB related jokes...* :p I'm also loving this American acoustic band who tend to upload their own cover track of popular songs such as Dynamite by Taio Cruz (another song I can't help replay): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=30WakIlloqs&feature=relmfu So what's on replay for you on your iPod/mp3 player/whatever it is you own! |

I'm listening to Radio 6 a bit these days. I need to tidy up my ipod, there is stuff that I've done for Mrs R that got automatically copied on there. It's160G ipod, so it just takes everything that's on the PC. Shuffle can be very hit and miss. There are also a lot of 'Unknown artist' tracks, which can be a surprise too. The last thing I put on there was the new Ry Cooder 'Election Special' album. So, a lot of angry stuff about Mitt Romney and co. Musically, it's quite rootsy and basic. I get the feeling it was done quickly: I think Ry plays everything on it except drums (his son, Joachim hits the skins). http://www.bbc.co.uk/music/reviews/zz8r |

Yes, some of don't have Ipods. (The other day my husband, mostly more technologically aware than I am, asked me what an Ipad was, but I didn't know either). My radio is set to the national programme of Radio New Zealand and it is mostly interviews, news and analysis, though they have quite a lot of music in the afternoons. A feature album each day. Not normally pop stuff, though not long ago they played a Lady Ga Ga album - it was much better than I had expected. This week's seems to have included the latest Bob Dylan and Band of Horses. In my car I have tapes (and one of the most important thing about buying a car for me is that it takes tapes), and many of them are made up from old music they have played on RNZ (50s and 60s stuff mostly), but right now I just have a Jim Reeves tape on. (Perhaps I should change that, and say I have a Radiohead or at least a Blur one on to sound a little less naff.) |

Richard Hawley is interesting: I like what I've heard but there is a strong element of 'homage' bordering on pastiche in what he does. He wears his influences on his sleeve, a bit like Nick Lowe in that respect. |

I used to listen to music on a portable device especially when travelling long distances on planes and things....it calmed me in the hustle and bustle of travel to hear my own selection of music on a Sony Walkman; pre-iPod generation, and when it came out in colours to join the regulation black of the time, it lightened my mood even more.... These days I prefer to listen to music at home on a music system or digital radio, and although I have an i-phone, which will play music, my iPod is my iPad which with the advent of wi-fi allows me to watch a movie or mini-series via iTunes, (strikes me here that an "i-p" rhyme or ditty is in the offing) or download a book or post here or look something up on the internet...or will do again as I await delivery of the new 3rd generation i-Pad on Monday! I've given my present one to my father who is in hospital and needs cheering up; and although he doesn't know it yet, its his to keep just for times like these! Have downloaded a good book and brain games for him to occupy his mind. When coming back on the train from a visit to Kent yesterday, a guy had his iPad upright on a stand watching Charlie Sheen's Two & a Half Men!....Listening to 'transported' music is, and always will, be very popular especially with the younger generations, but I'm also seeing lots of people on their laptops or iPads or reading their Kindle whilst travelling - not everyone it seems wants to listen to music these days! I heard 'Reggae got soul' by Toots and The Maytals on my little DAB radio (R6 the other day) and it really lifted me ~ what a great song that is! There isn't much to it lyrically (or musically, I suppose) but sometimes the combination of a great groove and powerful vocal performance just works really well. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ivk0x1vThY Edited by rumbaba, Sep 25 2012, 07:55 PM.

I'm not exactly sure what an iPod is but... My musical obsessions for the last couple of months have been inspired by my highlights from the Proms. Schoenberg - "Gurrelieder" (I've been playing the Boston Symphony Orchestra version, featuring Jessye Norman.) Berlioz - "Requiem" Shostakovich - Symphony #7 (There were two superb Mahlers this season; but the Bernstein cycle of the symphonies is already my Bible. No big Stavinsky or Berg this year.) |

They've just started showing Season 2 on Si-fi, but we missed the first two eps, so had to catch up online, and then we couldn't resist watching the rest of the season. It's 'True Blood', but with more irreverent humour, and not so many dead (or undead) bodies. Until I watched the video, I thought Gin Wigmore was a band, rather than a woman. We're probably going to be listening to a lot more of her stuff. |

The poet, Wullie Hershaw, who writes in the vernacular of the mining villages and towns of the part of Fife that I come from, is working on a project about Joe Corrie (1894 - 1968), a miner from Fife whom T. S. Eliot described as "the greatest Scots poet since Burns". Wullie plays and sings in a couple of folk bands and there is a 16 song album on the way about Joe Corrie, I thinkhe sets some of JC's poems to music . I got an advance copy of four of the songs and I am listening to those. Unfortunately, as I mentioned on another thread, the transfer from CD to ipod hasn't worked very well ![]() Edited by rumbaba, Oct 12 2012, 02:55 PM.

I heard Martha's song recently: she is always interesting (I'm less enthused about her brother). My friend Frank, the journalist, had lunch with the McGarrigle sisters, many years ago when they were playing in Glasgow. He told me they were very nice people and it was the first time in his career as a journalist that the person(s) he was interviewing invited him to lunch and paid. Our mansion block is being totally renovated with a 26-week contract period...The exterior is being taken back to the original brickwork as years of layers of filler & paint are blitzed off and all stucco and decorative masonry is made good with new.... We are a radio/music free building as far as builders are concerned. We had the interior completely refurbished earlier this year and now the external renovation, and I think we would have all been driven to distraction if we had had to endure builders music as well as their constant banter! A few years back, our residents association met up with the head landlord's managing agents and we drew up a document specifically for contractors, which prevented any works being carried before 9am and ceasing by 5pm - no weekend work except that which was noiseless on Saturday between 9-1pm and NO radios! Absolutely! and yes they do call me Madam, of their own volition I might add - as for forelock tugging.... hmmm, most of them seem to be without the necessary equipment to do that! On the subject of playing loud music why should people, like Hugh for instance, have to suffer the loud unbridled music of others just because they live next door or under or above or are carrying out building work on your or a nearby building!

Wonderful aria!- I have just seen Woody Allen's latest film To Rome with Love and there is a character in the film who sings opera like a maestro in the shower....Woody Allen's character hears this modest Italian funeral director singing his heart out in the bathroom whilst visiting his home and insists he could have a more fulfilling career singing classical music - when Woody takes his protegee for an audition with contacts he has in the classical world, he fluffs the interview and later Woody realises that he can only sing incredibly when he's in the shower.....so being a Woody Allen film you can guess what happens next.....

I really enjoyed Midnight in Paris, his continued foray into Europe after London & Barcelona; thought he was pretty much back to his old self. To Rome with Love starts well enough, there are the usual individual stories, four in this one, involving quirky characters getting into tricky situations all the while showing great shots of Rome's interior city; and although funny in places it kinda peters off in places - but yes, I would say its definitely 'worth a watch' for Penelope Cruz alone! His next film which will be released next year is still in post-production and as yet untitled; but Alec Baldwin who features in To Rome with Love, appears with Cate Blanchett and Sally Hawkins, who was in his Cassandra's Dream,...he's been very careful to keep the plot close to his chest!

I'm listening to a rather lovely song I've never heard before ..it's one of the choices of the guest (Tidjane Thiam.) on Desert Island Discs this morning I will have to wait for the list of the songs to appear on-line to know what it is as I didn't catch what Kirsty said it was. |

I've been listening (in my head!) since Friday to Robbie's new no. 1 single Candy - pretty weird lyrics, but terribly catchy chorus! Hey ho, here she goes Either a little too high or a little too low Got no self-esteem and vertigo Cause she thinks she's made of candy! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=46Xx-aQmg8A Edited by Mobson, Nov 5 2012, 11:10 AM.

Boyce Avenue - Skyscraper. It's a cover of Demi Lovato's song, but I prefer Boyce Avenue's version by a mile!

"Lonnie's Lament" (x2) The original version by the John Coltrane Quartet ("Crescent", '64) Jimmy Garrison's big moment is the best bass solo I know of, this side of Mingus. (Though another jazz-bass hero, Richard Davis, conjured up some good 'uns.) And McCoy Tyner's solo piano version ("Soliloquy") Tyner played on the original, of course; but his version is a beautiful masterclass in how to turn an ensemble piece into a wonderful solo turn. |

I saw McCoy Tyner once, many years ago at the Fairfield Halls, Croydon. It used to be a great jazz venue, I saw loads of people (I lived in Thornton Heath, which is very near Croydon). From memory; Sonny Rollins, Stan Getz, Gerry Mulligan (supported by the Wynton Marsalis band), Freddie Hubbard, Wayne Shorter, Sonny Fortune, Stanley Clarke, Elvin Jones. Of course, some of these were in the same band when I saw them, I think Wayne Shorter was in Stanley Clarke's band and Elvin was playing with McCoy: it was all a very long time ago

My Christmas ipod selection has well known Christmas songs, done as instrumentals by The Dixieland Ramblers and there are also the same songs done by a bluegrass band. I have Tommy Smith's Christmas album in there and I have various versions of the Christmas Song (Mel Torme and Nat King Cole). I don't have 'The little boy that Santa Claus forgot' cos I don't want to blub on the train ![]() He's the little boy that Santa Claus forgot, And goodness knows, he didn't want a lot. He sent a note to Santa For some soldiers and a drum, It broke his little heart When he found Santa hadn't come. In the street he envies all those lucky boys, Then wanders home to last year's broken toys. I'm so sorry for that laddie, He hasn't got a daddy, The little boy that Santa Claus forgot. Spoken: (You know, Christmas comes but once a year for every girl and boy, The laughter and the joy they find in each brand new toy. I'll tell you of a little boy that lives across the way... This little fella's Christmas is just another day. He's the little boy that Santa Claus forgot, And goodness knows, he didn't want a lot.) In the street he envies all those lucky boys, Then wanders home to last year's broken toys. I'm so sorry for that laddie, He hasn't got a daddy, The little boy that Santa Claus forgot. As Patti Smith is one of my heroines - "Because The Night" - Springsteen "Redondo Beach" - Morrissey I think Springsteen's demo shows that he was doing his fellow New Jersey gal a favour by giving her a co-writing credit and her only real hit. Morrissey is also a big Patti fan; and I can see how the "sweet suicide" theme of this song would attract him. His backing band stick too closely to the original arrangement for the track to be interesting, musically. But Morrissey's (beautiful) voice is on fine form; all the little whoops and stutters and quivers in the right place. Yep, I like it. (Oddly, he leaves out the word "sweet" before "suicide". I would have thought that "She was a victim of sweet suicide" was a very Morrissey-like lyric.) |

"http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2GHFy7DHEqM That's the tune I was talking about. [And it's me singing] Does anybody know what it's called?" It's the Prelude to Act 3 of Lohengrin by Richard Wagner. The lav seat piece is by Chopin , but I don't know its name. I used to have one of those lav seats, but got rid of it because it took too long to lower. |

I caught up with this the other night and once I got past the fact that Owen Wilson was doing an (annoying) impersonation of Woody Allen I enjoyed it...I don't think I'll be rushing to see anymore of Mr Allen's films in the near future as they are getting samey now ...enjoyable but samey. At the moment I'm listening to this, new to me, song from Nadine Shah ...Dreary Town http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hzg3CPHrwbE |
