I heard them on the radio the other day, live session on Radio 6. I like the band name 'Sweet Baboo'

I'm listening to 'The Joe Corrie Project - Cage load of men' by The Bowhill Players. It's a tribute to ex-miner, poet and playwiright Joe Corrie, who was described by T.S. Eliot as the finest Scottish poet since Burns. Some of JC's poems set to music, some new songs referencing him and the themes he wrote about. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Cage-Load-Of-Men/dp/B00B8QI2R8

They are performing tonight at The Lochgelly Centre in Fife. It is the brainchild of Fife poet, songwriter, musician, English teacher and all-round good guy Willie Hershaw. My very good friend Tbone Duffy will be playing banjo on a couple of songs, one, not on the album, intriguingly entitled ' My Heart is a Fireball XL5' . I wish I could be there for this.

The weather has been lovely these last few days and it has been nice to get out and about. Only trouble is I have found myself singing a few lines from one of Grace 2's songs over and over again

Well I don't get what or why or how
All this exists right here right now
I'm searching for the answer every day
Yet still some of the things I find
Make the questions stop and me forget my mind
And I start to feel like everything's okay...

Unfortunately, she hasn't put it on the internet, so you're not likely to hear it unless you happen to catch her busking in Lausanne.

I find myself singing this currently, after listening to 'The Joe Corrie Project'

I am the Common Man.
I am the brute and the slave.
I am the fool, the despised,
From the cradle to the grave.

I am the hewer of coal.
I am the tiller of soil.
I am serf of the seas,
Born to bear and to toil.

Off late I have been listening to more rap and hip hop. Here are my recommendations:
Kendrick Lamar - Hiii power.
Kanye West - all of the lights.

And also discovered music by The XX - excellent production! Here's are two of my favourites from the album:

Youtube is blocked at work so I can't check these links out till tonight.

I'm listening to some tracks of the 'Searching for Sugarman' soundtrack; 'I wonder', 'I think of you' and 'Inner City Blues' mainly.

I quite like Laura Marling's 'Master Hunter' but I am put off a little bit by the fact she now sings in an American accent (I guess she is looking to emulate The Mumfords' success in the States and was advised to do that) - good song though <ok>

Tomorrow we are off for a week's holiday to Queenstown. "Adventure capital of the world" they advertise themselves - I will venture out of our accommodation, across the road, and there will be the (over-priced) shops and the food places.

But for the trip, I have packed our tapes (CD no longer works in the car): they are Janis Joplin's 18 Essential Songs, Paul Anka's Golden Hits, Willie Nelson in concert, Heaven and Hell - Bonnie Tyler and Willie Nelson, Queen - Made in Heaven, Words of Love - Buddy Holly and the Crickets, Marianne Faithful who seems to have taped from somewhere else, and has songs of 1946 and 1962 on the other side (taped off the radio years ago), Solid Gold Hits of the 60s, Donovan's Catch the Wind, Madonna - The Immaculate Collection, something from Tchaikovsky, more taped hits of 1960 and 1965, Cranberries - To the Faithful Departed, a tape for me from my son called Lady Caro's Rock, and The Greatest Hits of Elvis (not my greatest hits of Elvis, doesn't seem to have She's Not You or Paralysed or Just Tell Her Jim said Hello. Does have One Night though.)

Not perhaps the most dynamic modern music but more or less what we like (though I have had to cull the country music to satisfy my husband, who won't listen to any music if he had his way, and he probably will).

Yes, but we do have a lot of tapes. I detect some criticism of these (I was going to call them records, betraying my age and era) choices! My taste in music is very, er, low or at least populist. The CD in my car at the moment is a Bruce Springsteen one and I find I like his music lots. (Those two sentences are not necessarily meant to apply to each other.)

Nowhere at the moment, rum. She sends us stuff by email, fairly rough cuts I'm afraid - she doesn't have any 'proper' recording equipment. I don't think she's likely to put them on the net until such time as she can polish them up a bit.

Grace 3 has a couple of tracks out there, but they're not originals and not really very good, tbh. She did them with a college friend, who plays guitar and was in charge of the recording - and the choice of songs, I think. They don't bring out in the best in her, to my mind.

I listened to a bit of this last night, Tick and, in context, it's not bad, she has a sweet voice. I would be very interested to hear Grace 2's stuff though when she gets it out. There is a lot of cheap (free even) studio software out there that isn't bad, I know someone that uses the Apple stuff and he bangs out songs the day he writes them: not bad quality, straight to soundcloud. It beats the old days when you had to wrestle for hours with a four track mini studio, bouncing tracks together. You could do a whole album now in the time it used to take to do a three minute song.

Those recordings are pleasant enough, rum, but I don't think they do justice to Grace 3's voice, which is lovely - although lacking in power. Given the right song and the right setting she can produce a spine-tingling effect. Many people have commented on this, so I don't think it's just my naturally biased opinion. But she has yet to open the door to her soul.

Grace 2's voice used to be similarly weak, but she has adopted a completely different singing style since she started doing the occasional bit of busking. One of her latest songs seems to have a strong Spanish influence, but then she does mix with a number of South American musicians.

Where's a good place to find out about this studio software you mention? That kind of thing is a closed book to me.

Hi Tick, my friend Linton uses Garageband on a mac but I think there are other similar, lower cost options out there. I'll ask around and see what people are using and what they suggest as a cheap/free option. It depends what she wants to do. Would she want to plug in a keyboard or interface another instrument (guitar)? I haven't thought about doing recording for years and this has actually sparked my interest now, so it's good for me to find this stuff out. I'll get back to you.

I don't listen to much else at the moment, apart from the stuff Grace 3 has playing around the house, which I don't know much about. Grace 2 is experimenting with vocal styles and recently wrote a yodelling song. It's very good, I think - but I guess I'm biased.

It's old hat, I guess, but I've been listening to Natalie Merchant today. I'd never heard of her until a few week's ago, when I chanced to hear Motherland on the car radio, and was rather taken with it. I guess I've played it a few times on youtube at home and Mrs Tickle must have tipped off a friends of ours, as I was given the "Retrospective" double album for Christmas.

Also been listening to Grace 2's latest quartet of songs, which are quite intriguing.

I wanna know what love is
I wanna feel its sting
The way it make the tears come
The way it makes me sing its mystery...
