3-Way Word Chain

I'll just repeat the rules from the start of the old thread:

Quote:

You can add, remove or change one letter at a time to form a new word.

Letters can change order or stay the same but a straight anagram is not allowed.

For example:

cared
bared
breed
deer
dear
rate
tamer

(a pretty obscure word but I've had to cheat on this one - do let me know if "desolate" can lead elsewhere)

Desolated, obviously...but best avoid being closeted in case you're molested.

I think we need some better letters.

I am dubious about belletrist but apparently it is a word. We do not need better letters - we need about 5 less letters.

It's the combination rather than the number of letters which dictates the difficulty of this game imo.

5 FEWER letters, surely ... <whistles> And, yes, belletrist is certainly "a word" - and a valid one at that!

bolstered

Offline Profile Quote Post Goto Top

Caro

I think I'd used fewer earlier - I'm sick of fewer and even more sick of how people use it as a stick to beat people with. Just a silly 19th century rule added onto our language to make people feel superior. And it's still used that way - I hear normally perfectly polite people (my husband included) telling others in public that they have got it wrong. Annoys me no end.We don't have two words for 'more', why do we need two for 'less'?

Oh, I forgot - I was being specially nice to you, Tafkaj! Perhaps in view of that, you'll have to ignore previous post.

Plastered? So early in the morning! I think getting irate has clouded your judgement there, Caro. And I daresay taf was only teasing.

Offline Profile Quote Post Goto Top

Caro

Oh dear, I forgot somehow about your 'bolstered'. I had seen it, just ignored it. Sorry. Now I have to think and fiddle some more and whatever you say for me it's a lot quicker with just five letters. I don't expect Taf was teasing at all - he is keen on all these rules.

That just goes to show how many options there were for that one, Caro. I was expecting holstered or blustered or redoubles, but you've come up with something else.

troubled

That's because I was trying to get rid of a letter and now I've managed to get it down one more. Soon will take me more like 20 seconds than 5 minutes. (Though this one did just take me seconds, though of course you may tell me I've done something wrong again.)

I'd have thought it would be quicker if you were less fixated on reducing the number of letters and just went with the obvious.

redoubts

Caro

I go with the first one I think of normally. It takes forever when it's a long word. There's always a letter too many to work with easily. Here I could have had stubbed, but there's an 'o' and an 'r' so that won't work. More thinking required.

Waterbed? You don't see many of them round any more. I won one in a raffle once - it was a single bed and my son used it, but every now and again the wster would all flow out and we would have to drag the bed outside and empty it. So the garden was

I don't recall ever seeing many of them around, although I think my American brother used to have one. Spoilt for choice now and nearly wavered, but this brought the most smiles...

Btw Caro, did you have a good break?

Offline Profile Quote Post Goto Top

Caro

Oh, yes, lovely. Nice to see my very lovely country in its most scenic parts and we had some good meals out, including one our friends paid for that was exorbitant and minimalist but very good, even if my husband said he was still hungry at the end of it. You did need three courses to be full. And we saw Mount Cook/Aoraki clearly which doesn't always happen. I went shopping to buy a top - found a plain tee-shirt in a poncy shop for $205. I bought one for $10 in el cheapo department store.
