Our radio has been playing the latest Van Morrison album. Born to Sing: No Plan B, this week and a review of it today. The reviewer said his voice was as strong as ever and the music was good, but he had issues with the lyrics. I gather many of the songs were condemning wealthy people, modern business, etc. and the reviewer felt that this was a bit rich from someone who is, well, quite rich. He and the presenter felt this was a reasonable theme for those youthful performers on the rise and those on the downward slide (here Leonard Cohen was mentioned as having to tour and perform to pay the bills, is that right?), but not for those who are far removed from poverty. (Though if Leonard Cohen is struggling, how do we know Van Morrison isn't too?) I never take much notice of singer's personalities and lives until they are forced onto me, but they seemed to be saying Van Morrison was a difficult man with an abrasive manner. The lead song on this album was played today and it sounded good - very typical Van Morrison style. |

Van was at Ronnie Scott's the night after I was there (I was there Saturday he played Sunday). The concert got rave reviews and the new ablum has good reviews too. I was a big fan in the Early days, I had all the vinyl up to 'Hard nose the highyway'. He lost his way a bit and went through what I call his 'Avalon period' (the word came up in lyrics and song titles). I don't remember the album but I say him at the Dominion Theatre in London when he was doing 'Rave on John Donne' and some other sub standard stuff but there were enough old songs to make it a good concert. I don't have a problem with rich people condeming poverty. I have a problem with rich people who demonise the poor and say thing like 'I had to work hard for my money, they should do the same'. I applaud J.K. Rowling who has said she is happy to live and pay tax in this country, even though most rich people think she is a mug for doing so. She is more of a patriot than flag-waving Sir Richard Branson, Lord Ashcroft or any of the other people who seem to get honoured just for being rich. Edited by rumbaba, Oct 5 2012, 08:21 AM.
