Bedford couple unwittingly grow cannabis

An elderly couple have unwittingly grown the "biggest cannabis plant" police officers had seen after buying what they thought was an innocuous shrub from a car boot sale.

The couple, who live in Bedford, had planted the drug in their garden.

Police officers were astounded when they spotted the plant. They have collected it and a spokesperson said it would be disposed of.

The couple will face no action from the police.

The officers took to their @bedfordlpt Twitter account to express their surprise at the find, saying: "Seized today. Elderly couple bought shrub at car boot sale, tended carefully - biggest cannabis plant we had seen!!"

Another case of life imitating art

Unfortunately I can't find the cartoon which I think Stout Arthur Jampton posted somewhere a while ago - it was of two human scarecrows standing in a field discussing the subject of their degrees.

It's the misleading use of the term "unwittingly" that gets me. <whistles>

Heard about this on the radio....

Coneman The Barbarian

AN ICE cream man who threatened to “t***” a man complaining about his van’s deafening chimes has been banned from a cul-de-sac.

David Wilson was also said in court to have called one woman a “silly b****”, a teenager a “gay boy” and flicked a V-sign to a shocked mum and daughter.

Fed-up neighbours confronted the ice cream man when his blaring van arrived — as SNOW lay on the ground.

When resident Paul Cooper asked Wilson, 48, to turn off the ear-piercing chimes, he received a volley of abuse.

Neighbour Robert Sutch said he also came out and Wilson gave a V-sign to his mum and daughter.

Wilson denied swearing at Mr Cooper and his wife Michelle and yelling at another resident: “You’ve got your gay boy to do your dirty work.”

Council staff took an 84-decibel reading from inside a house when Wilson’s van drove past.

Magistrates ordered Wilson, of Whatstandwell, Derbys, to pay £945 costs and banned him from the street in Ripley for two years.

An appeal against his conviction for threatening words and behaviour was rejected at Derby Crown Court.

Staring eyes 'deter' Newcastle University bike thieves

Bike thefts have been reduced by putting pictures of staring eyes above cycle racks, researchers have found.

A team from Newcastle University decided to test the theory that people behave better when they think they are being watched.

For two years they studied crime rates at campus racks and found a drop of 62% at those which displayed eye posters.

The crime-fighting idea is now being tested at various train stations by British Transport Police (BTP).

For the first year the Newcastle team monitored bike thefts from all racks across campus for a control figure, then placed the eye signs in three locations, leaving the rest of the racks without signs.
They found that thefts from those without signs rose by more than 60%.

'Behave better'

The idea for the research was inspired by a 2010 study which showed diners in a canteen were more likely to clear away their tray when there were eyes watching them.

Lead researcher Prof Daniel Nettle, said: "We don't know exactly what is happening here but this just adds to the growing evidence that images of eyes can have a big impact on behaviour.

"We think that the presence of eye images can encourage co-operative behaviour. One strong possibility is that the images of eyes work by making people feel watched.

"We care what other people think about us, and as a result we behave better when we feel we are being observed."

Barry Sharp, from BTP's London North Area Crime Team, said: "Research shows that this sign has had some promising results at Newcastle University, and we are always looking at new ways to tackle cycle theft at rail stations."

The findings have been published in the journal PLoS ONE.

Man calls Solihull police to complain about prostitute's looks

<doh> <laugh>

A man has been warned after he dialled 999 to complain about a prostitute's looks after meeting her.

West Midlands Police said they were contacted by the caller who said he "wished to report her for breaching the Sale of Goods Act".

The force said the call was received at about 19:30 BST on Tuesday complaining that the woman was not as attractive as she had claimed.

Officers have now sent the man a letter warning him about wasting police time.

West Midlands Police said the man had claimed he met the woman in a hotel car park.
'It was unbelievable'

"The caller claimed that the woman had made out she was better looking than she actually was and he wished to report her for breaching the Sale of Goods Act," a spokesperson for the force said.

"When he raised this issue with the woman concerned, she allegedly took his car keys, ran away from the car and threw them back at him, prompting him to call police."

Sgt Jerome Moran, based at Solihull police station, called the man back to offer some advice.

He said: "It was unbelievable - he genuinely believed he had done nothing wrong and that the woman should have been investigated by police for misrepresentation.

"I told him that she'd not committed any offences and that it was his actions, in soliciting for sex, that were in fact illegal."

Despite the man refusing to give his details, police were able to identify him and have sent him a letter warning him about his actions.

The Sale of Goods Act 1979 gives consumers legal rights, stipulating goods which are sold must be of satisfactory quality, be fit for purpose and must match the seller's description.

Man caught with prostitute told police she was helping him buy tomatoes

A man who told police that a prostitute was in his car as she was showing him where to buy tomatoes has been found guilty of kerb crawling.

The known sex worker was spotted in Wednesbury Road, Walsall , sitting in a Nissan Micra apparently waiting for the driver to return from a nearby cash point.

As he drove away police followed the 39-year-old security guard into Wallows Lane where he was stopped and arrested on suspicion of soliciting.

In interview the Dudley man denied the allegations and told police that he had withdrawn £20 from the cash point and had been trying to find somewhere to buy tomatoes.

The married man was fined £400 and ordered to pay £665 costs after being found guilty of soliciting at Walsall Magistrates Court.

PC Stacey Paterson, from Walsall police, said: "I’ve heard some excuses before but in the 10 years that I have been a police officer I have never heard a kerb crawler covering up his crimes by claiming to be buying tomatoes!

"Our officers and the courts saw through his lies and the man has now been found guilty.

The man’s conviction is the latest in West Midlands Police’s Operation Scarlet ? a continuing crackdown on kerb crawlers.
