It looks like America is going to explode with election craziness ....... http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/us-elections/katy-for-barack-kid-rock-for-mitt-the-stars-take-sides-8281278.html http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/us-elections/legal-arms-race-begins-as-both-sides-prepare-to-do-battle-in-court-8281279.html Both sides are preparing to fight out close results in the courts and there's all sorts of dodgy business going on. Very impressive ...... I bet Mitt gets it by hook or by crook and with as much legitimacy as Robert Mugabe. Edited by caissier, Nov 5 2012, 12:34 AM.

Hard to believe, because he is,rightly, considered a joke in the UK, but Piers Morgan's show on CNN had more credibility than anything else I saw in the states. American interviewers are rubbish and , if someone doesn't answer a question, they just move on to the next question. What I saw of Romney made me terrified of the possibility of him winning. |

Well, his first name is actually Willard (Wasn't that the name of Matin Sheen's character in Apocalyse Now?) It looks like the name Bronco Bama might be sticking .... (quite a good one imo )

Yes but it was Martin Sheen's character's surname - Captain Benjamin L Willard! (it was on t.v last night!).... I can't allow myself to get involved in the US election - I am of the same mind as the American woman talking on WH this morning "I am only concerned with what is going on in my country"..... and yes Norm how could anyone vote for a MITT! - the most useless of hand covering as it disables you from doing anything even basic with your hand and doesn't even keep you warm! That says a lot don't you think!

Yes, but the trouble is what happens in America affects us here ..... like the collapse of Lehman Brothers ..... and the other investment banks. Bush declined to bail them out. (I remember they transferred alll funds from their London HQ over to NY - I guess - just before the actual end.) |

We've had a lot of news and comment here about the American elections and some of it has been bothersome. Mostly the commentators have said it will be an Obama win (though perhaps that is because as one man said "New Zealanders have embraced Obama, not like the unfortunate George W Bush"), as everything would have to go exactly right for it to be a Mitt Romney win. But they also talked about the incredible (to us here anyway) saturation advertising and door knocking and phone calling. (Apparently they have to use up all that money raised.) One man said it wasn't as bad as it sounded, because people of his opposition party didn't bother to annoy him. They knew from looking at Republican or Democrat lists who to target to ensure they voted. I didn't quite understand this - did he mean they basically knew how everyone votes? Here hardly anyone belongs to a political party, so that wouldn't help much. So how do Americans know a person is Republican? I did hear them saying there were ever sophisticated ways of checking people's affiliations and the Democrats in particular were very up with the play with modern technological ways, using how people shop, what they buy and read etc, to know how they vote. I don't much care for the thought that everything I do is watched and judged. Peole keep worrying about privacy when it seems there is no longer such a thing. |

Yeah I guess so! It's going to be a very tough four years what with Republican hold on the Senate but if Obama can reach across the aisle and form a coalition with them, he and America can begin to get back on their feet and make an inroad into a 16 trillion dollar debt... Well done to Obama and his party; and I for one wish his dream call of 'The best is yet to come"...fulfilled!

I watched it through the night with milk and cookies but not a lot of excitement and it went just about as the polls said it would. I thought Mitt grew in defeat, but it has all revealed disturbing things about a lot of Americans - that they can be so carried away by US way-to-go! excitement that they don't think rationally, and the ones who hate Obama aren't going to stop doing so. Many say he has been a disappointment but he got a kind of national health scheme into law, which Hilary couldn't, and did not do badly considering the opposition began planned obstuctionism even before he was in office. Otoh maybe limitations of ability have been exposed; one commentator was saying the Chinese think he is bulliable. The American election system might look crazy but it must be an incredible personal test of those who submit themselves to it. < barakhobama> Edited by caissier, Nov 7 2012, 09:41 AM.

Obama and rival Romney campaigned hard in Ohio with incessant campaigning, a slew of television ads and non-stop political phone calls. Ohio has not voted for the loser in the presidential election since 1960. One journalist summed it up thus: "A billboard in the Ohio city of Defiance, where GM has a plant, carried this same message for four weeks. Osama bin Laden is dead and General Motors is alive."....it caused a swirl of emotions but maybe accrediting these achievements to Obama swung the vote once again in that state! Well done to Nate Silver who called it right last time and this time. Fox news managed to make even more of an arse of itself than usual by being in complete denial about Ohio as the votes were coming in. The Tea Party will be upset - their entire raison d'etre is that they don't like the idea of having an uppity n***** in The White House. Hopefully they will rip themselves apart in a frenzy of infighting and blame and return to the obscurity from which they should never have been allowed to emerge: nutters to a man (and woman) and the most dangerous sort of nutter, nutters with money and power. |

I concur with that - 'cos I met him once in New York when a friend was going to buy an apartment in Trump Tower - correction - they wanted to rent an apartment - he had other ideas and wanted them to buy! ... We met up in the Oak Room bar of the Plaza Hotel and were already seated when he came blustering in with his geeky, slick sidekicks! He came straight to the point after the rush of ordering drinks (we'd already ordered) and started on a fast diatribe about why my friend should invest in his blasted tower - in fact it got even more complicated, because my friend wanted to rent in Trump Park Avenue! He didn't like my friend one little bit and decided to end the meeting - which he did abruptly by standing up, barely bothering to shake hands with him and just giving a cursory nod of that ridiculous head of hair to us ladies present! My friend eventually rented an apartment in Trump Park, but he did so agent to agent rather than have anything more to do with Mr T.....I have to admit the serviced apartment was pretty cool with great views overlooking Central Park - when my girlfriend and I went shopping, a gorgeous very tall concierge arrested us of our bags; it was a rule you were not to carry your shopping in the lift to your own front door! I was very glad though when my friends moved to the basement apartment of a brownstone at Turtle Bay, on the east side of Midtown Manhattan, owned by a Harvard professor with a very nice Lichtenstein in his lounge; and guess who lived there too, only Katherine Hepburn and someone who still does, Stephen Sondheim - much nicer company than old Grumpy Trumpy! The Moral Maze was not bad today imo, about America as a bastion of Enlightenment values - world morality. It got very testy as usual but had a look from a few angles. I think often the trouble is someone gets fixed on one moral consideration and elevates it to the only concern and gets heated. In a way Obama winning could be seen as a victory for sense over fear and superstition and highly vested interests. He might turn out to be a jolting change from the entrenched stasis of the recent past. MM ..... http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b01nq3tf/Moral_Maze_07_11_2012/ |

I can't listen to MM, I get too annoyed at all these self-important, opinionated people like David Starkey and that dreadful woman who writes for the Daily Mail and appears to be full time PR consultant for the Israeli Government: Melanie something. I also can't stand that awful woman who used to be a communist and is now 'director' of 'The Institute for daft ideas' : somebody Fox? There's usually one token nutter on Question Time but, with MM, it seems to be the other way around. |

I don't think Starkey is on it anymore but Melanie Phillips and Clare Fox are and stiil doing their annoying stuff. Why it has to have the pretend adversarial courtroom format I don't know; to generate entertaining conflict, I spose .The suggestion was that America, for all its faults, is the ultimate bastion of Enlightenment values, partly due to the way it came into being - and to geography too presumably.
