Last night's selection by Liz Barclay was such a good listen that I've linked to some of the actual programmes which deserve a hearing too, if you haven't already! Starting with a piece on Alistair Cooke's Letter from America in conjunction with the current presidential elections and a clip from Obama's celebratory election speech; a faux announcement in the voice of Obama giving traffic news. God Bless Berkshire! he cries! Continuing the race theme, there is a piece from the World Service on John Howard Griffin the white journalist who lived as a black man in America's deep south. Really insightful on what questions the whites asked him as a black man. Ian McMillan's The Verb, as part of the R3 Free Thinking festival 2012 at the Sage in Gateshead, featured guest poet Tony Harrison with a perky reading of his poem Them & (Uz); http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H8pnEYBzY5g A piece followed on 'received pronunciation' i.e. regional accents in broadcasting - contributors included the X-factor voice of Peter Dixon who was encouraged to announce Thought for the Day in X-factor mode! Billy Bragg talked about John Peel who he said was his "X-factor" in an extract from Master Tapes with John Wilson. Earlier in the day I had listened to the Museum of Curiosity which featured Buzz Aldrin - worth a listen to the whole programme, which also features Ig Nobels founder Marc Abrahams and comedian Sara Pascoe, not just Liz's selected pick if you missed it.... http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b01npjp9 The Gaza Surf Club features Doc Pascowitz, the 91 year old father of surfing 'for peace' in Israel - this is a very moving and poignant story...."for an instant we solved the problem between the Jews and the Arabs".... http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b01nphnq On Midweek, poet & ex-soldier of twenty years, Theo Knell tried to read a poem without breaking down about a group of soldiers whose comrade who had been lost in a patrol conflict only an hour before....incredibly current and likewise, moving! The Art of Remembrance, mentioned by Caissier in Poppy thread, brought to my attention the German painter, Otto Dix and his painting The Match Seller; especially the description of the disabled war veteran sitting on the pavement selling matches whilst a dachshund was peeing on his wooden leg. Will put a copy of the painting in Art...and a link to Dix's very moving (and distressing) War paintings.... More picks including Lord Reith calling for the transmitters to be shut down! .....All in all, an impressive selection. http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b01nt07m Edited by Mobson, Nov 12 2012, 11:17 AM.
