I'll start off the new thread with....

Train carriage aisles ...much too narrow ...for the second time, in a matter of weeks, yesterday my feet were run over by people dragging suitcases behind them :'(

I burnt my finger in a freak accident on Friday. Mrs R was in London with two of her friends and left a Sainsbury's moussaka for me to heat up in the oven (foil tray, not microwavable). It was like something out of a sitcom, I am still not sure what happened, but in attempting to transfer it from oven to plate, I ended up with my fingers in the moussaka, which was 'piping hot' BTW and dropped some of it on the floor. I had to clean it up off the floor while still in considerable pain and distress. I ended up with a big, hard, blister on my finger, which I had to eventually poke with a (sterilsed) needle. Regarding Room 101, I still not sure what in particular I want to point my burnt finger at but I wasn't at all happy. :(

The train aisles are far too narrow agreed becks....add to your complaint about trains, people who put their thumping great suitcases on the seat next to them, or opposite them and next to me!! <steam>

In the last couple of years, the price in the shops has DOUBLED (from c.£2 to c.£4 per 750ml bottle).

Should keep the Room clean for a while.

Poundland is merely following in the footsteps of F.W.Woolworth, who made his fortune by charging not more than ten cents for any item. This was a boon to people living on the breadline during periods of financial hardship.

My nomination for Room 101 is Chelsea Tractors.

Our eldest said she prefers the 99p Shop to Poundland, but the 98p Shop sounds even better.

Just how many of these things have you seen in a doorway in Masons Yard, Mobs? And how do you know it was left by a man?

<ok> .... Well it certainly could have been made by an Elephant! <yikes>

Mason's Yard runs parellel with Jermyn Street between Duke St and Duke of York Street St James; historically it was where Mr Mason had his stable yard many moons ago...now it is the chic home of the White Cube gallery...there is a narrow passageway that connects through to Ormond Yard and I have named it Pee-Wee Alley...for obvious reasons...every now and then someone decides to do more...usually in the doorway at the turn of the alley or at the corner wall...I feel so sorry for the poor man with the portable cleaning cart and broom, employed by WCC, who has to clear up this disgusting mess! Mercifully I have never witnessed the event live, so cannot say if male or female but judging by size - well, I will say no more!

I'm not a Chelsea fan - far from it - but I was wondering why, even though they finished level on points with Shakhtar in their Champions League group and have a better goal difference, it is Shakhtar who finish second while Chelsea are third. And then I found this:-

Teams level on points are separated by:
1) The results of games between the teams in the tie (if tied, by goal difference and then by away goals counting double).
2) Goal difference in all group games.
3) Highest number of goals scored in all games.
4) Highest Uefa ranking over the previous five seasons.

So that's it: away goals. Shakhtar lost 3-2 at Chelsea but beat them 2-1 at home. I've always thought the away goals rule was barmy enough in two-leg matches and it seems even more bizarre in this context. It should go into Room 101.

Acrophobia sufferers can experience a panic attack in a high place and become too agitated to get themselves down safely. Booking fees. WTF are they all about?

Offline Profile Quote Post Goto Top

Member Avatar

It depends Tick. If it is reasonable and per booking, as opposed to per ticket, I can live with it but the ticketing angencies that buy up blocks of tickets for popular events and then tout them to the publlic with a massive mark-up is a disgrace IMO. For some smaller venues that can't afford their own ticketing systems, booking online and so on, they outsource the ticketing, or even the whole website management, and the company providing the service takes the fee.

Not quite the same, but I tried to book a room at a small hotel in the Midlands for a night in August (breaking the journey to Scotland) on the hotel's own website but it failed to process the credit card details and, in frustration, I called them and booked it by phone. It was £10 per night cheaper by phone than booking online for the same room on the same day and theyt didn't even take credit card details.

What is also annoying, with tickets, is having a 'suggested donation' added to to price of a ticket, which I think is a bloody cheek. Mrs R bought some tickets for a special exhibition of impressionist paintings at (I think) the national gallery in April, it's £16 a ticket and they suggest a donation on top - having a laugh. I got this with the Southbank theatre as well, Queen Elizabeth Hall, Purcell room, and it wouldn't let me set the donation to nil. I booked by phone and told not to even think about charging me for the phone booking (which has an additional fee to booking online), which they accepted.

I suppose, if the booking system is outsourced, it has to be paid for in some way, but I'm not sure in what way that would normally be done. I was looking at an Anvil Arts brochure, which covers three venues in Basingstoke. I've no idea if the ticketing system is outsourced or not, but all ticket prices include a £1 booking fee. I presume the price is the same regardless of whether I book online, by phone or in person at the theatre.

It varies Tick, we have two theatres in T. Wells, one has no fee if you go in person, the other one has a fee regardless. Mrs R and I booked 4 events and paid one 'booking fee' for all 8 tickets (set fee, not percentage of value). It wasn't much but I opted to print my own tickets, there would have been no fee if we had booked in person: the place is manned by volunteers and it's a nice vibe - converted old church. There was a small additional postage charge if you opted to receive via post, which is fine. The Assembly Hall seems to levy a fee regardless, I can't remember if it is per ticket or per transaction, probably per ticket £1.25, something of that order.

As a rule, theatres do not charge booking fees if you go in person, in fact, it has been known that a discount is available at the box office on request...depending on the production and its success of course.
