Yikes Rum - Fifty Shades of Christmas Tunes! <angel>

For me it's David Bowie dueting with Bing Crosby, wearing his comfy cardy, amalgamating Peace on Earth with Little Drummer Boy in 1977!

Still, for me, the best Christmas pop song yet recorded:

The Waitresses, Christmas Wrapping

Any pop song that can sound so funky AND reference Twas The Night Before Christmas has got to get your juices flowing. <XMAS1> EDRFJ WERTGYHUJKILO;P' 54rfy6h9ioop

I never feel Christmas has quite arrived till I hear Bing Crosby singing White Christmas, but my radio must have decided this is cliched because I haven't heard it yet, though Elvis was singing it yesterday and that was quite nice. A tny little bit more upbeat than Bing's version. Otherwise I most like Fairytale of New York with the Pogues and Kirsty McColl.
For carols I always ask for Oh Little Town of Bethlehem - I like its minor key sound. (Not sure if it's actually in a minor key but those little semitones that take it into a minor sound are appealing to me.)

There was a nice programme on last night about the making of 'Fairytale of New York'. It took two years to write and originally was supposed to feature Cait O'Riordan (The Pogues bass player) in the duet but she left to marry Elvis Costello (was was producing The Pogues album at the time).Kirsty McColl was Steve Lillywhite's wife (he was producing the album that featured FTONY) and she was around in the studio, Shane asked her to try the duet and the rest is history. There was a lot background about irish immigration to New york, Ellis Island and so on. also, the making of the FTONY video was very interesting. There was even an interview with J.P. Donleavy, who wrote the novel 'A fairytale of New York' (nothing to do with the song).

It was weird that Fairytale of New York seemed to be 'in the air' yesterday - mentioned here in this thread, in the programme you refer to Rum that aired on BBC2 at midnight, which I watched just a little of ....and then later on two diff Buzzcocks!

Went to a Christmas Concert last night. It was a Russian one, so I didn't know all the songs.

Well, they did sing one or two in English. It was a bit of a rum do, really, but the refreshments afterwards included some very nice cakes - Costco's best, I fancy - although no caviar. If you're wondering why we went to a Russian Christmas concert, it's because we saw it advertised in the local paper and thought our Russian house guest would enjoy it. (She's a friend of Grace 2 and came over here just before Christmas with a view to finding a job and improving her English - which is infinitely better than my Russian.)
