I'm lucky enough to get sent lots of music books. Here - in order of publication - are my five faves of the year. * "Irish Blood, English Heart" - Sean Campbell The Irish are angry (Dexys, Pogues) but make great music. The third band (The Smiths) are the most Irish of the lot (in terms of personnel) but he has a hard time convincing this reader that there's anything remotely "Irish" about their music. * "All The Madmen" - Clinton Heylin The English are demented and depressed (Bowie, Drake, Syd Barrett, Ray Davies, Townshend) but make great music. I'm being flippant; but that is, indeed, the theme of the book. He started it! * "Trampled Underfoot" - Barney Hoskyns Led Zep spent many years getting away with what many men (in the post-Savile days) are currently being arrested for; and, along the way, made some great music. * "A Light That Never Goes Out" - Tony Fletcher Morrissey is a Prat; but, along the way, The Smiths became the best band of the 80s (and in the years since). * "Once Upon A Time: The Lives of Bob Dylan" - Ian Bell I think this is the best of the bunch. As a fan, I've read many Dylan books over the years; and this is definitely one of the very best of THAT bunch. It's not so much a straightforward biography; more of an extended essay or "meditation" on Dylan. Very thoughtful and brilliantly written; a great, enjoyable read. (560 pages; and it's only Part One!) |
