I am currently listening to someone who is surely destined for stardom and success - everyone seems to think so - that's why Jo Whiley's got him on her show and has invited him to play his music on Elton John's piano. This afternoon he was given this year's Damien Hirst-designed Brit Critics Choice award at the launch party at the Savoy Hotel for Nominations for this year's BRIT Awards, which will be held at the O2 on February 20th.

Tom Odell is his name, a 22 year old pianist-singer-songwriter, who hails from Chichester and studied at the Brighton Institute of Modern Music. He's the first bloke to win this innovative award, which has seen previous winners make quite a career for themselves, namely Adele ('08), Florence & The Machine ('09), Ellie Golding ('10), Jessie J ('11) and last year's winner Emeli Sande, who presented Tom with his award this afternoon' ...just look at what's happened to her in one year!

On winning the Award he said, "I genuinely can't believe it. Thank you so much. Looking at the list of female artists who have won the Award already, I just hope I don't let the boys down."

As well as winning the Brits Critics’ Choice gong, Tom has also been sort listed on the BBC Sound Poll 2013 and MTV’s Brand New for 2013 list.

Tom's been writing his own songs since the age of 13 ...He’s signed to Lily Allen’s record label, In the Name of/Columbia ....and she’s said of his talent, “When I saw him live, his energy onstage reminded me of David Bowie. [He’s] not all soppy and moany at all, it’s energetic and insightful. And he’s totally gorgeous as well.”

Tom says "Lily has done it all from scratch herself, so I couldn't wish for a better mentor. She doesn't try to mould me at all - I hope people listen to my music before thinking I'm a male Lily because, as great as she is, the creative decisions are mine." He added: "My rule is to write songs people can relate to. Artistry is being lost with so much processed dance music. It's not all that human, and that's what I want to bring back."

In interviews he cites David Bowie's Hunky Dory as his father listened to Bowie whilst his mother listened to Elton John - he cites Yellow Brick Road. He plays piano like a young Elton with passion and verve; also reminds me of a young Chris Martin when he struck out with Coldplay's album Parachutes. He has also been likened to Jeff Buckley....

Last October, after the release of an EP, Songs from Another Love - the vinyl version of which is on Amazon for £35! , he appeared on Later...with Jools Holland and Christopher Bailey chose to soundtrack his song, Another Love, at the Burberry's catwalk fashion show shot in London. His debut album will be available in April and he'll be touring the UK, after gigs in New York, Toronto and San Francisco, on March lst starting in Birmingham... http://tomodell.com/

That's good - I missed him on Jools and the clip isn't working. I've got the EP...I like the way he delivers this one, especially the piano solo...
