I heard this on Friday evening before a rather good repeat of a Saturday Drama called The Listening Room. This particular "A Point of View" was ten minutes of pure delight in which David Cannadine "reflects on the enduring appeal of the teddy bear in contemporary culture"...since they were first named after Theodore Roosevelt over a hundred years ago....

My parents still have my teddy bear ...a very pale ginger, rather ugly bear; he's in a pretty bad state with one eye and arms crudely stitched on by me as a child as only I could look after him! My daughter's teddy is still with me...he's a lovely dark brown Merrythought bear - 1969 edition with a bell in his ear, given to her by her godfather's girlfriend at the time ...he still has the original blue satin bow around his neck...he has not really been loved as he should have been... :'(

I do have two smallish bears from the House of Lords; the cream one sports a red roll-neck jumper bearing a gold H of L's crest, the other is chocolate & wears a cream jumper with gold logo...I gave The House of Commons bears, who wear green jumpers with gold logo's, to my grand-daughters years ago, but have kept a tiny cream bear that has a backpack in an aubergine colour stamped with the house of lords logo..I did have six but have given them as presents....

My favourite bear is a stand-up darling in grey mohair with a pot belly, cute button nose and gorgeous black jet eyes called Bertie Fortnum (from whence he came) - he's a 1995 Merrythought bear, officially called Blunder; I had reason to contact his makers after one of those bloody moths I have spoken about here decided to make a small hole in the sole of his left foot....they sent me a M label to cover it together with details of his provenance, and that is when I discovered he has a little friend called Bodger who I have yet to find....

What's your bear story?

Mrs. Mads collects 'Teddy Bears' her collection ranges from Steiffs/Farnells to 10p 'rescues' from charity shops. They seem to sit on shelves before being put back in their boxes at the back of wardrobes

The phrase, "He wanted me to take him home" is usually the excuse.....my remarks about keeping them in the dark are not appreciated... <whistles>

It's a funny thing about bears - they just seem to turn up in your life - I am not a collector of bears or of anything of a stuffed nature - unlike my mother who until recently had a bedroom full of them! But the ones I have acquired will probably be with for the rest of my days....and then will be found homes.!
