When asked how he would pass his time on the desert island, whilst waiting to be rescued,Sir Terry Leahy former Tesco boss said on Desert Island Discs that he would collect driftwood and build a Tesco on the corner of the island... A memory of his Dad made this beautiful song by The Fureys one of his choices for the island.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z265BuKCQrc |

I've since listened from where I left off yesterday - his last record choice, from Bizet's Carmen - Act 1 Habanera - L'amour est un oiseau rebelle- instead of Kiri Te Kanawa, my version would be with Julia Migenes Johnson/Placido Domingo/Orchestre National de France. Thoroughly approve of his choice of books, the complete works of Charles Dickens...and his luxury - tea! Finally his ultimate record of choice Pachelbel's Canon and Gigue in D major - which was the music played out at my 36 year old sister's funeral back in 1997.... I also like his choice of Cat Steven's Father & Son, which has very special memories for me after it was released on his vinyl album 'Tea for the Tillerman' in

Reminds me of the old story..... Bangladesh have been banned from the football World Cup since 1978 when, in their first match, they were awarded a corner and opened a shop.... |

Creating a 'cargo cult' for yourself is quite absurd business practise.....who will shop in it whilst he is alone on his island? |

Har har har ..... very funny Sir Tel ...... They are opening up all over the place round here. A well-known nice big 30s 'road-house' type pub has been given Metro planning permission recently despite big public protests - there's that one in a church ............ Did George Orwell predict all this? New Tescos 'convenience' store to be ..... http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8288/7514040188_5a987fb1a7_z.jpg Edited by caissier, Feb 6 2013, 01:57 PM.

When I was teaching in the 1980s, I hada lively discussion with 12-year olds in a history lesson. "Why did the Romans build all those dead-straight roads across England?", I asked. One bright spark thrust a hand in the air, and pointed at Abid in the front, " Sir, 'cos if there were corners, Abid's dad would build shops all the way along it." Racist joke? Not really, you have to go with the flow at times. Well, we all shared the joke.

Being a working-class trollop (you could take me nowhere) I say bulldoze the bijoux, fancy-pants, niche-market wee shops and build more Tescos. After a hard day at work, all I want is a one-stop shop where I can load up with cheap booze, cheap ciggies and cheap horseburgers. |

May-Cee, you sound like a cool down to earth gal, and to crown it all, you like Bill Evans.

A cigarette's walk down the lane - or less if you walk quickly - there's a precinct of about 15 retail units, 5 or 6 of which are currently empty. As far as I'm aware, 4 or 5 of the occupied ones are soon to be taken over by a Tesco Express. Two of these are restaurants, which I think are planning to move into some of the other units. One of them is a "corner shop", which has been there since the precinct opened. I don't suppose it will be able to compete with Tesco - it's already struggling to compete with the newsagent/PO and the booze shop, both of which now sell a wide variety of products. I'm not sure how they will fare when Tesco arrives, or even if the newsagent will be staying - I heard a rumour that the Indian restaurant will be moving in there. However, the man at Booze Bargain, which sounds like May-Cee's sort of place - although I'm not sure they sell horseburgers - assures me that they'll be staying, so that's alright. |
