What a treasure trove of listening pleasure the Desert Island Discs archives are... Jack Lemmon from 1989 was my latest choice from it and a nice listen it was,too...lovely man by the sound of him. He tells of how Harry Cohn ( Columbia Pictures) wanted him to change his name,in 1953,from John (his given name but changed to Jack by family) Lemmon to John Lennon ....needless to say he didn't change it..... This week's Desert Island Discs castaway is veteran actor Jack Lemmon. With nearly 50 films to his name, including comedy classics like The Odd Couple and Some Like It Hot, as well as more serious films like Missing and The China Syndrome, he's also an accomplished jazz pianist, and he'll be talking to Sue Lawley about his passion for music and the vital part it has played in his life. http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/features/desert-island-discs/castaway/88b94ebf Edited by becky sharp, Mar 3 2013, 10:49 AM.

Lovely man (certainly seemed it) and great actor! My favourite film of his: The Apartment, written & directed by Billy Wilder in 1960; where he co-stars with Shirley MacLaine & another great actor Fred MacMurray..(maybe he should have been called MacLemon! ![]() Funnily enough I was trolling through vintage DID's yesterday afternoon too - for my thread in Films on Dirk Bogarde after watching Talking Pictures yesterday lunchtime. Sue Lawley certainly made her guests feel at home whilst asking them quite pertinent (& impertinent) questions...Dirk was certainly forthcoming although still resisting complete truths as only a good actor can.... Will have a listen to the D.I.D. with Dirk ...thanks Mobs! Dirk's long time partner,Anthony Forwood, was the first husband of Glynis Johns. One of my favourite Jack Lemmon films was Irma La Douce

I had a schoolboy crush on Glynis Johns - those eyes, that voice! She was the daughter of Mervyn Johns who starred in the Ealing shocker, Dead of Night |

Yes, imagine Tony left her and their son, Gareth, for Dirk, but it did last over fifty years ! |

Don't think I've seen that, dai, I best remember him as Bob Cratchit in Scrooge ...the Alastair Sim one. I love Glynis Johns's version of Send In The Clowns. |
