My brother and I made a list of my sister's record collection yesterday. Most of the records weren't really my sister's: she had possession of the family collection as it was about 35 years ago. This included about 70 old 78's. Amongst these were a few names with which I'm familiar - such as Gracie Fields, George Formby, Jimmie Rogers, Reg Dixon, Victor Sylvester, Frank Chacksfield, Sandy Powell - but the majority were unknown to me. I was wondering if any of our senior members remember any of these... I know someone called Tom Foy. He was from Cowdenbeath but now lives in Inverness. Don't think he made any records though

Hello Tick, A few of the names are planted in my grey matter:- Harry Welchman...An actor of some note in the 30s Sandy Powell..A very popular comedian of his time. I remember him from pre-war up to probably the mid to late 60s. He had a radio catchphrase...probably one of the first.. which was "Can You hear Me Mother"? Hal Swain and His Swinging Sisters, was a well known Music Hall act Ernest Pike...I can remember hearing his recordings rather than anything 'live' about him. Lou Praeger...One of the big Dance Bands of the 40s to the 60s. Broadcast a lot and had the residency at the Hammersmith Palais for a number of years Jack Payne...Another big Dance Band of the 30s 40s. I believe but I'm not sure, that he was the director of the BBC Dance Orchestra for a while Clarkson Rose...The name simply rings a bell, can't remember anything about him Albert Wheelan... Singer and general music hall entertainer,I remember he whistled a lot and always had a dog on stage with him. Guy Lombardo...A very well respected conductor of a popular Dance Band in the 30s and 40s in the USA and this side of the pond Anton Wallbrook...A very famous stage and screen actor of his time Edited by Norm Deplume, Mar 3 2013, 04:08 PM.

Beniomino Gigli - 1890 - 1957 World famous operatic tenor, (the Pavarotti of his day) Sandy Powell - Music Hall and radio comedian. He sometimes included an incompetent ventriloquist act, in which the dummy ended up falling to bits. Clarkson Rose played refined pantomime dames Anton Walbrook was an Austrian born film actor. He played the impresario in the Powell Pressburger film The Red Shoes starring Moira Shearer. He also played the Polish composer in Dangerous Moonlight, for which The Warsaw Concerto was written. I know a Sandy Powell but she's a 3-time oscar winning costume designer...definitely heard of Anton Walbrook - think everyone knows The Red Shoes...he was also in the 1940's version of Gaslight and The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp.

The only ones I seem familiar with is Guy Lombardo and perhaps Sandy Powell. It's a bit odd how some names stay in the public mind and some don't. Maybe something to do with quality, but probably not in these cases. |

Thanks for the responses. I thought that list might stir a few memories. Some of the records would probably be worth a few bob in good condition, but, sadly, the majority of them are scratched to glory. |

Bex, Geraldo(Gerald Bright) formed the Gaucho Tango band in the 30s when Latin dance music first became popular. At the end of the 30s he started his regular orchestra which quickly became very well recieved and they were, in fact, one of the best in the business during the 40s/50s. Not many people know that he could not play any instrument and could not read a note of music! |
