It's in the news again... My mum was born in Resistencia and moved to Belfast in the 50s. I've travelled there only twice; but it's a country and culture that I'm very fond of and interested in. (Especially the Tango! The music, the dance, the history and politics of it; and, of course, the great Astor Piazzolla.) Over the Christmas period, some of our Argie family stayed with us in Dublin. They told us that the average Argie doesn't give a damn about the Malvinas / Falklands; it's their government that keeps stirring it all up. I was in Buenos Aires a few years ago and was a wee bit nervous at first; I went out of my way to stress that I was Irish and not English. But there was no need. Despite what the Daily Mail tells you, the Argies are actually very fond of the English; and obsessed with the Premier League! PS: That eejit Morrissey always manages to put his foot in it. Every time he plays in Argentina, he makes big pro-Malvinas, anti-Brit speeches. The audience is thinking - "Oh shut up, you twit, and sing a Smiths song." |

it was apparent that the average argie doesn't care about falklands when the junta were in power and sent over the youngsters to fight for the malvinos. carlos tevez plays for manchester city in premier league. |

I have an Argentinian friend, from San Juan. She's extremely nice and makes me very conscious of the approximately 1250 Argentinians who died (and 250 British) because of that election-winning stupidity. It just seems crazy - imagine if the Isle of Man was a Brazilian possession. |

I'm tempted to quote the famous line by Borges (the one about the bald men fighting over a comb) but it's too well-known. Ooops! I think I more or less have quoted it! |

"imagine if the Isle of Man was a Brazilian possession". __________________________________________________ Caiss, We are talking 350 miles, not 50 which is roughly the distance of the Isle of Man from the mainland. |

Norm, I was trying to illustrate what I think is the anomalous daftness of our owning those patches of bleak land so far from this country, not to mention the cost. |

http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2013/mar/12/falkland-islands-referendum-votes-yes but the islanders want to stay british. I realise britain has given up most of the countries of it's 'empire'. as regards falklands i think the argies handled it badly in the 80's and now any climb down would be an insult to those who lost their lives. |

Perhaps Mr Blair could have a word with Papa Francis about getting Mrs Kirchner to lay off the Falklands. She regards its inhabitants as "squatters", which is a bit rich considering that most of the population of Argentina are of European origin http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demographics_of_Argentina#Indigenous_peoples Edited by dai Cottomy, Mar 14 2013, 05:32 PM.

Well, but the Happy Valley folk might have wanted Kenya to remain 'British'. I don't think the Falklanders can expect the world to turn around their preference. There ought to be some kind of compromise possible. The place could even thrive if there was more economic engagement with Argentina, with everybody happier. |

..... Perhaps Argentina might follow Hague's example and decide to supply arms to the 3 who voted 'No'..... |

Cass, you mustn't say that; next some anarchist will point out how, although Libyan/Syrian dissidents must be supported vocally/militarily, there is a deafening silence about their treatment in the UAE.... |
