Today to sounds of huge cheering from the gallery, the Marriage Law was passed in NZ (subject to the monarch's consent which is not able to be withheld) allowing gay marriage. It passed by something like 77 - 44, considerably more than the 61 - 60 passing of the Mondayising of Anzac Day and Waitangi Day when they fall at the weekend. Obviously our government is more concerned with business profits than family traditions. We are just the 13th country to pass same sex marriage and the first in the Asia/Pacific region. It's nice to be early in these social reforms.

Business doesn't like Mondayising our holidays - despite it affecting them only twice in seven years, and despite NZ having considerably fewer public holidays (11 when these fall on weekdays) than most other countries. I can't help feel that if a business can't absorb this sort of cost they can't be operating very profitably. And if they resent it when they are working profitably then they aren't treating their workers very well.
