An article pointing to how the NHS is being taken over by corporate health interest such as The Hospital Corporation of America (HCA) ...... heartbreaking imo ....... http://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/health-and-families/health-news/worlds-largest-private-healthcare-company-hca-plans-expansion-into-nhs-8659439.html The most chilling phrase, I think, is 'tendering for 25 year contracts' ...... "The Health and Social Care Act, which came into effect in April, has been criticised for making it much easier for private healthcare providers to strike deals with the NHS and pave the way towards a US-style healthcare system. New independent think tank Centre for Health and the Public Interest (CHPI) published a report this week (Wed) warning that “the introduction of greater use of for profit providers as a result of the Health Act is likely to substantially increase the amount of healthcare fraud in the NHS”. It named HCA in a list of several American health firms that have settled fraud cases in the US. The report, Healthcare Fraud in the new NHS market – a threat to patient care, concluded that new system “will result in less money for patient care when funds are already scarce in the NHS”. The CHPI report found the use of payment-by-results contracts with private providers was providing opportunities for ‘upcoding’ - with patients categorised as having more serious conditions than they actually have. It said: “The risks to the English NHS are increased by the fact that some companies entering the new NHS market have settled major fraud cases in the US.” Edited by caissier, Jun 15 2013, 03:45 PM.

Jeremy Hunt has just given the go-ahead for the closure of A&E at Trafford General Hospital, 'the birthplace of the NHS' despite a vigorous campaign by local people. http://savetraffordgeneral.com/about/history/ ![]() "(Aneurin Bevan) ..... described it to the first ever NHS patient, 13-year-old Sylvia Diggory (nee Beckingham) as “the most civilised step any country had ever taken.” Sylvia, who was the youngest person on Ward 5 at the Hospital, watched nurses form a ‘guard of honour’ for Nye Bevan as he arrived to mark the launch of Britain’s National Health Service. Sylvia said: “Aneurin Bevan asked me if I understood the significance of the occasion and told me that it was a milestone in history – the most civilised step any country had ever taken, and a day I would remember for the rest of my life – and of course, he was right.” Edited by caissier, Jul 11 2013, 11:06 AM.
