The opening post seems to imply a rather touching faith in America to remain top dog. Here we expect to be a state of China's, or at least a lapdog. Having free trade with China is something of a double-edged sword, we find. A place to sell our products but there's an awful lot of Chinese products to take in return, and then the Chinese, some of them, do odd things to our products, stick melamine in the milk, treat their workers badly, and have a quite different cultural approach to business which has to be learnt.

Britain's in a big enough state as it is.

My reference to "Heartland" by The The would have worked better if I knew how to do links to YouTube...

Ta, Wu!

Do you know the "Infected" album?
(I can't remember if The The ever came up on the R2 Board.)

I think it's an over-looked masterpiece; certainly Matt Johnson's finest moment.

A dark picture of the 80s -

...despair, unemployment, strikes, the Falklands, union strife, bombs, Americanisation, loss of identity, and more despair...

Right up your street, in fact!

I do know the Infected album, and very fine it is. I got Soul Mining when it came out and had great hopes fot Mr Johnson. then when Infected was released, it was clear that sort of stuff wouldn't be allowed on the great british airwaves. I remember saying a few complimentary things about The The (best band name ever) on R2, but I didn't get anywhere. Same with Bob Mould and Sugar <tumbleweed>

Is there a light picture of the '80s?

I so love this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-32AAp418V4

Ever the optimist. :)

Yes, alas, Johnson's career did seem to fizzle out a bit, didn't it?
(Is he any relation to Speccy?)

I love "Copper Blue" but didn't keep up with them after that.
I had a few chats with Hex about Bob Mould on the old Board; he was a big fan.

Pavement (especially "Slanted and Enchanted") were my pet US indie-band of that era.
(As well as The Pixies, Throwing Muses, Belly, The Breeders axis.)

My now nine year old god-daughter is learning Mandarin...the mother of a child in her class at school is Chinese and trained as a teacher...there are currently four children in the group taking private lessons ... But there is talk at the parents evenings of introducing Chinese as part of their school curriculum....

China as top nation is a horrible prospect. I like to think it won't happen as such because of corruption and a lack of democracy. Goodbye to valuing the individual and human rights if it does.

If you look at Guam, Puerto Rico, the American Samoas, the Virgin Islands, and the Northern Marianas, I think you will realize the US does not often give statehood, even if it should.
Then if you look at Hawaii, who was supposed to be given back its sovereignty and wasn't, years ago, you will be glad that this is not going to happen to you.
They don't even teach us about these territories or Hawaii's sovereignty in our history classes. It's all just swept under the rug.

The latest manifestation of creeping Americanization (thought I'd better spell that with a zee) seems to be Black Friday. So I'll be down at Wallmart ASDA at 8 o'clock on Friday morning.

9/11 should be 11/9 over here, but we have been speaking American since at least the end of WW2.
