Last year there were 100 acts on two stages over 4 days: all original music, all local and of a very high standard. Short of stumping up 20k, there's not much I can do :(

That's really depressing and surprising news...a concert of that ilk, you would think the organiser could tout around and even perhaps find new sponsors...what about asking Michael Eavis - I read further down that the Hop Farm festival was cancelled too...that is also depressing news...although I haven't actually been, I did consider it a couple of years back as there was someone I really wanted to see live....

The Hop Farm was always weird, huge names and no sponsorship (by choice), they had Neil Young before Glastonbury, also Bob Dylan and God knows who else - I never understood the business model. It has gone into liquidation I think.

Local & Live had big sponsors before, was very well run but I think, in the end, it has all become too much for Paul Dunton. The Jazz festival on the Pantlies was also in jeopardy for a while because the owners of THe Pantiles (Target Fellowes) have suddenly decided on security and H&S levels that never applied before. At a time when money is scarce the cost of staging these events is being ramped up . There is no problem from the musicians point of view, it's an opportunity for them to get their original material out to reasonably big audience and they have always done it for free. It's ironic that we may have the best weather for years but no L&L. Mrs R is very down about it - we live less than 10 minutes walk away and structure our bank holiday weekend around who's playing when :(

Yes it was Neil Young I wanted to see!

Sounds like a job for you and Mrs R then! i.e. to take over the reins from Dunton... <wink>

Sorry about that,rum..

I saw this a couple of weeks ago

Isle of Man music festival cancelled

A music festival due to take place on the Isle of Man next month has been cancelled due to poor ticket sales, according to organisers.

The event was scheduled to take place on 6 July at Nobles Park with a line up including Primal Scream, Paloma Faith, Johnny Marr and Laura Mvula.

A festival spokesman said: "Refunds should be directed to the agent from where tickets were purchased."

"The event can't move forward due to the lack of ticket sales," he added.

Festival prices ranged from £55 to £150 for a VIP ticket.

"The risk in pursuing the event would put businesses on and off the Island in jeopardy," the spokesman said.

"A great Festival was planned for the Isle of Man - with global artists, international and local media partners and world reaching sponsors. Sadly, this cannot now be realised."

This is a free event, it needs sponsors. Can you believe £12k up front to cover security? Paul is a great guy, built this from nothing and has run it successfully for 8 years. He is a singer/songwriter himself and has done a lot to promote original music locally. He has weekly gigs at the Grey Lady Music Club on The Pantiles where he gives local artists the chance to perform their stuff and has put on gigs at the Trinity Theatre to try to raise money. I'm gutted but Paul will be completely devasted. His 'day job' is a golf pro but music and this annual festival is what he is all about, it's his life. If I could find enough people willing and able to do the same, I'd front some cash. Maybe, if this had been known earlier, T. Wells would have come good but I think it's too late now :(

No, disaster not averted, not for the music fans. 100 acts playing original music over 4 days replaced by 'lounge jazz' . I went to see Bobby Wellins play last night on The Pantiles. I was sitting pretty close to the stage but was struggling to hear above the din of people chatting. If someone is playing on the bandstand and the weather is good, you get loads of people out but 90% of them have absolutely no interest in jazz. They just ignore the band and chat loudly. I don't know why these people didn't just fund local & live, rather than go this route. They might as well just play Kenny G albums through the P.A.

Paul has agreed with The Forum venue to put on 20 of the L&L bands but it quite a small, only doing evenings and it'll be £8 a night to go. It's a shame, let's hope next year it's back on.

Good News <ok>

Meanwhile, Paul Dunton has decided to put some of the acts on his roster to good use by running a number of Local & Live fundraising gigs at The Forum. They’ll be charging for the events but it’s all in a good cause and every penny raised will go towards next year’s festival.

Paul says: “This fundraising weekend at The Forum is going to be amazing.

“There are so many great local acts performing and they have all been so wonderfully supportive about the cancellation of the festival. They are all really keen to help raise some funds for next year and bring the festival back to the town.”

The Local & Live gigs will take over The Forum on Saturday and Sunday evening, and all of the headliners who’d been booked for the festival will play on the same bill on the Monday, from 2pm.

But that’s not all. Paul is also putting on bands at The Grey Lady on the Sunday night and he’s just announced an acoustic stage in the garden on Sankey’s, running from 2pm till 6pm each day.

It’s far from the drab weekend we were expecting when news broke of the festival’s cancellation.

And to top it all off the staff at The Forum have decided to fit their own mini festival around the Local & Live gigs.

Called HeaTWave and featuring dozens of top local bands, the event will have acts on the main stage at The Forum during the daytime but will also feature acoustic acts at the Duke Of York pub and DJ sets at the Sussex Arms.

Organiser Jason Dorman says: “We felt it our duty to ensure some of the artists in the area had an opportunity to entertain the public. It’s all short notice but we are sure there will be something for everybody. ”

<wink> Is that a dot ball Rum?

Dot ball: a delivery bowled without any runs scored off it, so called because it is recorded in the score book with a single dot.

Bigger and better this year, new venue.

Went to a fund raiser last night. Third on the bill, 14 year old Lily Denning, nice songs, good harmonies with her sister, very confident, good voice.
