I don't know who some of these are. <erm>

Bowie will probably get it. I am surprised The Arctic Monkeys are still eligible, now they are based in LA.

Trolling down the list in order, after David Bowie, the next name I know is Laura Mvula who made quite an impact at this year's BBC Urban Classic Proms... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9KyVinvphEA

The Artic Monkeys have not actually left the UK Rum, a DJ friend of mine tells me. They were recording their latest album in Joshua Tree, California, trying to get a different sound, experimenting with a fusion of hip-hop and rock giving their new album 'AM' , released last Monday, a Dr Dre beat. After headlining in Germany, Glastonbury & Poland in June/July this year, they're playing 9 dates on the tour around the UK in October/November, including a homecoming gig at Sheffield's Motorpoint Arena. They're sold out at Earls Court on 25/26th October, but not before I got tickets, and were playing on Radio 1's Live Lounge this morning around 11am before whizzing back to the States to play 11 venues, starting with NY's Webster Hall on Monday then Boston, Philly, Atlanta, Chicago, Oakland, LA, Baton Rouge, Chattanooga, Nashville, Birmingham AL, Austin Texas, ending with Mexico City...flying back to jolly old Newcastle to begin their UK tour in October as already mentioned above...

Jake Bugg is a contemporary of Tom Odell, who I like and have previously written about in the music thread. They did gig together but Odell has been going solo since Glastonbury...

You know who Laura Marling is don't you Rum...you wrote in another music thread in May about Master Hunter... "I quite like Laura Marling's 'Master Hunter' but I am put off a little bit by the fact she now sings in an American accent (I guess she is looking to emulate The Mumfords' success in the States and was advised to do that) - good song though" <ok> ... I mentioned an Observer free cd giveaway of 10 of her songs back in December 2011!

Rudimental - like this dance collective quartet from Hackney, comprising songwriters and producers, who say they are on a mission to bring back soul into electronic music - "you can't box us into a category, we're more about musicality, songwriting and broader influences." There are four core band members who use their musician friends to play with them, aiming to use live instruments as much as possible in the studio and on stage. They had a no.1 with 'Feel the Love' with a stand-out performance by John Newman, which caught the ear of Beyonce and Jay-Z who invited them to perform at his Made In America event. They've released a debut album called Home, which I bought on i-tunes after hearing another of their songs 'Waiting All Night feat. Ella Eyre', in which there's a great solo from a very good jazz/pop trumpet player called Mark Crown who's groovier than Courtney Pine - he freelances with them as part of the band's touring line-up. They've done a cool remix with fav Ed Sheeran called Drunk and a song with Emeli Sande. Booked to play more than 40 festivals in 2013, after playing Glastonbury, V-Festival & main stage Bestival last weekend they've now jetted off for a tour of Australia until the end of the month. Should anyone want to know more, here are Rudimental explaining five things you need to know about their music and their debut album... http://idolator.com/7483207/rudimental-interview-album-home

Finally, James Blake; first saw him when he was on a shortlist for the BBC's Sound of 2011 poll for new artists alongside pop act Jesse J, who eventually won; the Vaccines and two others...he missed out at a time when female artists were popular and being so successful, the likes of Adele, Ellie Goulding, Corinne Bailey Rae following in the footsteps of the international success of Amy Winehouse, Leona Lewis and Duffy, all probably influencing the nominations to go with yet another female performer. Remember seeing a short film of him performing his early work for the 'Sound of' programme and was quite impressed, but have not seen anything of him since - although I see this is his second album that he's being nominated for.

Dunno Jon Hopkins, Savages, Disclosure, Rudimental or James Blake. Jake Bugg sounds like a cartoon: very popular in an Ed Sheeran sort of way and equally annoying.

I read an interview with Alex Turner and he sounded very much as though he intended to be LA based but who knows.
