Thanks for flagging this up, Dai. Trane was hugely influential, not just for jazz players. There is a great story about JC soloing for ages during one number, when he was in the Miles Davis' band. Afterwards he apologised and said' I just didn't know how to stop' and Miles snarled back 'It's easy, just take the f*cking horn out of your mouth'I have always felt that Sonny Rollins' contribution to jazz and tenor playing tends to be a bit unfairly overlooked because of the Coltrane obsession in the jazz world, although there is no denying JC was iconic. I've just noticed, I flagged it up a day late. Apologies to all my readers. Thanks for the story, Rum - that sounds like typical Miles. I must say that Sonny Rollins is a particular favourite of mine too. At the age of 83, he is still going strong.

I've seen Sonny a few times over the last 30 odd years and I have never seen anyone so at one with their instrument, a consummate improviser - a joy to watch and still touring, what a man! |
