Ishtar knocked on the door of the room assigned to Maynard, waving a haggard Manfred back to his own room.

Inside, Maynard was double-checking the lists he had made. The first was of things he considered necessary to acquire while they were in the capital, and was a relatively conservative list, taking into account that the contract was likely to be quite expensive when they got around to working it out. The second covered lesser priorities, if they had the money left for them. Siege tomes and a pair of teleportation staves topped the first list, followed by Fortify and anti-monster weapons. The second listed off a few other high end tomes and weapons, and included a note to look into a Silence staff and anti-armor weapons, in case they made an appearance...

As he scanned the lists again, searching his memories for other obstacles they would need to be prepared for, he was interrupted by a knock at the door. He turned toward it, setting the lists aside for the moment.

"Come on in," he said.

Ishtar entered, giving a cursory "Bishop," before closing the door and leaning against it.

"Just got through giving the new guy with the spear an intro. He's staying on for now. I can maybe make something useful out of him by the time we reach the Ruins. I'll talk with the kid with the chakrams tomorrow, probably."

She folded her arms. "What do you think of the Sons?"

"Good to hear," Maynard said, with an approving nod.

"They look pretty competent, for the most part. Got a few kids and oddities, but, well," he shrugged, "we ain't exactly in a spot to throw too many stones over a couple of those in the mix. And if the leader was one of General Guyperson's apprentices, that counts for a hell of a lot in their favor."

"From Grado, right? Don't know much about him."

Ishtar shook her head. "They're sending some more men to escort the Lovelaces back to Rausten. They might catch up in time, but... We've got maybe seventeen people between us as it is, I think. Two or three of which are rookies or at least inexperienced. We should consider trying for more people."

"Grado, aye. And probably, yeah. Another thing to look into while we're in the capital, I suppose."

"Yeah. We going over land or catching a ship? By sea would be faster, but we'll have more time to train and maybe more opportunity to pick up some help if we go by land."

"Figure we'll see when we get there. Expect it's gonna be damn hard to find a decent one that'd take us, if Captain Thewhat actually spread the word about what happened last time we used his ship."

Ishtar grimaced. "We... probably shouldn't count on a ship, then."

She was silent for another few moments. Then, "Even if we do pick up more mercenaries, we can't really afford to keep them on for long past Lagdou. If the Twins are there, well, we're in luck. If they aren't, though, we're down a whole lot of money and maybe have a couple more capable frontliners, but we're up against the same forces that hit us so hard in Teraz. We can't take those kinds of losses again, both for manpower and morale. So... I want to try teaching everyone in the Order how to fight unarmed. Better than being helpless if they don't have time to cast or lost their weapon, and training ought to make everybody faster should it come to the worst again."

"Don't plan to. If we don't find 'em there, we can get by without mercs well enough for the of the search, I figure. And go ahead," he said. "Got a plan in mind if we run into something like that again, but it can't hurt."

"...Good a time to start as any, I guess," he said with a shrug, obliging.

"Hmm..."

Ishtar assumed a stance, markedly different from her normal one. Feet planted a shoulder-length apart, with the left leading by half a step, right heel slightly off the ground, while her right fist was beside her chin, with her left half a foot ahead. She assumed Maynard would try to mimic her.

"You'd be best as a puncher, I think. Stay in close, wear the enemy down, and finish them with a combination or a single hit. Give me your best shot, Bishop."

Maynard took the same stance, mimicking Ishtar. After a moment, he aimed a right hook at her head.

Ishtar leaned out of the way, hair brushing the door, then stepped in before Maynard could recover his stance. Her rear hand snapped out, grabbing his extended arm, her lead hand trailing along his side to figure out the changes in his positioning.

"You should have given more power from the hips, and moved in closer beforehand. Plus been faster to pull back. But other than that, technique was more or less solid. You learn this somewhere before? Also, usually don't want to open with a hook. Hurts, but if your opponent is off-guard enough you think you can hit them with something strong, an uppercut is often preferable, because that will mess up their balance something awful and leave them open for a finishing hook. If they aren't off their guard, then you either wait or start with the jabs..."
