The strange woman had recently taken her daughter's body. Her two other charges had yet to be sent off, but she was planning it. And that other man, the one so attached to Cielet's child often irritated her. Though he was trustworthy; he was a loyal little subject, one who knew her secret. She'd found it impossible to keep it from the boy. Still. Cielet was thus walking around. Searching for areas where local talent may congregate. No reason not to continue work gathering followers, yes? Yes. So she was thus making her way through town. Stopping inside stores and walking out minutes later. Checking those places most commonly frequented by people of all ages, the woman found herself disappointed time and again, as she usually did. Deciding to stop in for an actual drink at the last bar, Cielet sighted something shocking. One of the people working for the barkeep seemed interesting to her. So she sat down at a table and called the child over. She was an ambitious girl, Cielet could tell that easily. But more importantly, "Child. Your hair is made of elder magic." Of course, Cielet spoke low. |

"I... don't quite understand what you're saying, Miss." Emily said, with a slight smile beneath her feign of innocence. Pulling out a pencil and a notepad, Emily began to jot the required information down, including the table number and other assosciated information. Not for the first time, she wondered why she had to - it wasn't like most of the chefs could actually read, after all - but, then again, if someone did come, it was better to be safe. And that extra bit of skill did mean that she was payed a little bit more. "Now, what could we interest you in today? The panda steaks, imported directly from Carcino, have just arrived. I hear that it's quite popular among some of their most famous mercenaries." |

"I will take a drink. I see the magic in you. The commoner calls it dark, but you know it is different. And so clever. You hide your true nature by covering it with elder magic." A low chuckle. "I would enjoy any beverage and will pay for one of your choice. Sit down; you are the only interesting thing to cross my path today." A pause. "But first, bring my drink to me." Perhaps most off-putting would be Cielet's lack of tonal inflection. Every word spoken had the same sound; dry neutrality. No emotion expressed itself through the woman's lips. |

"I'm sorry miss, but I really do not know what you're talking about. I'm just a simple waitress here, and I really do not have enough time to chat. Time is money, as they say. I'll get you your drink, though." Without waiting for a reply, Emily went into the back room, searching for a bottle of whatever it seemed that the woman would like - and was also quite expensive. After dwelling on it for several moments, she picked up a bottle of an unusual liquid, and a rather large wine glass. "This is what they call Sparkling Grape Juice, I hear it's quite popular in some parts, though I've never had much of a taste for it myself." |

A smile spread on Cielet's lips. "I wish you would sit. I see you brought some A second later, as Cielet's sightless eyes wandered to different locations, she suddenly turned and stared directly into Emily's eyes. As intense as the look may be, she still had a face that gave nothing away. |

"I say again; I am working." Emily's eyes met directly with the woman's, without a change in gaze or even the slightest blink. If one were paying complete attention to Emily's own eyes, they would see that they grew a fraction darker, but it looked as if no one was. It was several moments until Emily spoke again. "Although, my shift does end in a few minutes. If you could hold on for a while while I serve a few other customers, clean up and sign out, I would be more than happy to share a drink with you." |

"I have already indicated as such, child. Your eyes have darkened." Was all Cielet said before she seemed to entirely forget the girl's existence. In truth, she was merely taking stock of the rest of the people. Perhaps one or two were mages or had the capacity to be so; but none shone so brightly in Cielet's eyes as this shaman before her. |

"And I'm just reaffirming your point," Emily said matter-of-factly, before taking the bottle back to the back room. After serving another group of customers - why anyone in their right minds would actually want that panda steak and gasoline, she would never know - she alerted her colleagues that she was leaving and sat back down, across from the woman. There were many things that she could ask her at the moment: the most obvious was how she knew about the hair, or what she wanted to do with her. The most burning question was regarding the woman's remark about her younger years, even though she didn't look much older than herself... but she didn't quite know how to phrase it properly. And, she, of all people, knew what could happen if someone stepped even marginally out of line. So she stayed silent. Go on the defence and learn what they're trying to do, before you strike. |

"There are many things humans do not understand about this world. The secondary sight of the mind is vastly underdeveloped by this species." Another glass of Sparkling Grape Juice was poured and sipped from, and a glass filled for Emily. "You may call me Cielet. And if you would share with me your name, I may share some knowledge. Being blind has its benefits when you still can see." Perhaps the most impressive factor was the child's ability to control the hair while still focusing on other things. |

"Emily," the girl said simply to Cielet. "My name's Emily." She proceeded to reach out to the Sparkling Grape Juice that had been set out for her, and took a long sip out of it. Again, she was reminded why she didn't have the taste for it, but it would be impolite to act otherwise, and she really didn't want to act as such to... someone like this. And she swore she took away the bottle and only left one glass. Still, it was quite possible that one of the other girls had handed a second to Cielet, so it wasn't too much to worry about. As for Cielet herself... she seemed interesting, to say the least. If she hadn't been able to see through her disguise, Emily really wouldn't have thought of her much more than a madman by this point, and the subjects of which she now spoke of just seemed to enhance that possibility. But still, there was something quite... unnerving about her. The way that she spoke was... almost horrifying. The type of slow, consistent tone that the ghosts would have in your dreams. And her eyes, they just seemed so, so colourless and lifeless. It didn't look as if it was possible to see out of them - though, arguably, many could say that to her - so was she using that metaphysical sight she spoke of? Cielet's reply just made more questions burn ever brighter. Without knowing where to begin, after almost a full minute of staring, Emily simply asked the first question that came to mind. She enunciated every word properly, as if considering the repurcussions of each and every word the moment before she had said it. "You said you liked Sparkling Grape Juice a lot in your 'youngest years', though you don't look much older than me. "How old are you?" |

"The answer to your question is variable. It depends on what you are asking. I have two ages: one of mind; one of body." Glass raised to Cielet's lips and was placed down again. "To save time, I shall answer both. To speak physically, I am as you say; not much older than yourself. Yet to speak of my mind, I am far older. It was not long after the War of the Stones that I was born. I became powerful. And then I had a daughter; I took the body as my own. And so I have continued doing. Now I am here, ancient of mind and fresh of body." A pause. "I have my own question. You no doubt know that the elder magics are far from the brute energy most shaman utilise. Yet I have never had the opportunity to see a practitioner of the dark magics use it gracefully. I feel it is a disservice. Your casual use of it interests me. Speak on the matter; would you tell me why you developed it so unusually?" Edited by Cielet, Wed 5 Oct 2011, 08:02:08.

"A disservice? And I was just beginning to like you," Emily said while smiling, to show that she meant no ill will. "But interesting. To live forever, so to speak? I admit, raising a child like a lamb for slaughter doesn't interest me so, but if it is what must be done to, then so be it." ... to live forever. That would be the ultimate power. Access to all of the world's resources, until the very end of time. No one would be able to challenge her, her knowledge unmatched, the personification of power itself, she could all well become. She would be remembered forever. On the other hand, what would she gain if she did have that power? What would she live to do? No time to achieve her goals, all the time once it had been. Is that the way life had to be? And when - not if, she knew that well enough - it did come to die, how would she feel? Would she be driven insane by the terror beforehand? Or treat it like a glorius rest after a long day's work? And, at least this way, she wouldn't feel the need to get used to a new name whenever she took the body of a child. Emily opened her hand, and, seemingly out of nowhere, a perfect black band, elastic by appearance, appeared within it. Holding it within two of her smaller fingers of her right hand, she began to fiddle around with her hair. "Thing is, I'm not nearly as good with it as I'd like to be, so don't get your hopes up too high. With all the skill I have, I still can't make it up into a good ponytail." After several attempts, the majority of the hair became enclosed by the band, and with a click of her fingers, the hair did its best to straigten itself, though still did look quite messy. "Although I can definitely see the uses of a bit of control. Disguises and such. With the rate I'm going at, though, should be able to get it done pretty decently in about a week or so, which is about just as well. "As for your, question, well, it's not one of the stories that I find most pleasant to tell, see. And it's one of the few secrets that I can call my own: why would I choose to tell it?" A pause. "If not for a secret in return. I understand that it is in no way an equal trade for you, but there's no reason why I can't go all the way. How is it that you have achieved eternity?" |

"The details are beyond your grasp at this stage, child. Suffice it to say, this world is far more complex than even magic can spell out for us. For magic is itself an effect, not a cause." How best to word it? "There are strands of a string. A metaphysical string beyond normal comprehension. I do not fully understand it; I've never had a call to do so. Yet I know that from mother to daughter a piece of it stretches. And through this string, one's essential being can be transferred. "I regret to say the process results in the death of the former body. It is a risk. With the mind comes knowledge; all the memories and intelligence of the original personality. Yet I have come close to eradication. It becomes a battle of wills where one soul attempts to override the other." Refilling her glass Cielet paused. "I have practiced with Light; I've dabbled in Anima. Yet I have learned; the body must learn to keep pace with the mind. A practitioner's magical ability cannot be transferred. I see your magics; I cannot emulate them." Downing the Sparkling Grape Juice and pouring another glass, Cielet took a momentary pause. "Yet I see them. You have finesse, but it is just beginning. With some help I could teach you a small measure of a second sight. Not enough to see in detail, but enough to perceive your own faults." |

"Hmm. And you say that it is as a by-product of this 'second sight' that you have gained access to the bodies of your descendants? As barbaric as that would be, it looks like you'll have to teach me it some time." If killing her own children would be what she needed to do to attain completely power, then so be it. If they were in her position, they would understand. One girl would have to die at the dawn of each generation to become the new vessel for the world's God; what greater honour could there possibly be? "Although I did say that I would have to fulfil my side of the bargain: unfortunately, I don't believe that it is as interesting as yours. Put simply when I was... younger... I cared quite a bit about my own appearance. More so than most my age, which was saying something. My hair's naturally white, my eyes red, and my skin paler than you see: someone of your experience would likely have seen someone like this before. After a whole lot of practice, I ended up mastering it to the extent that I have today, working well enough, not only for appearances, but in combat too." Another long sip of the Sparkling Grape Juice ensued. "It's quite pathetic, really, in hindsight, especially considering the hitches that occured down the road. But you can never change the past, so there really is no point mulling over about it: only the future can be changed, bu your work in the present. And so I feel the need to ask another question: why me? For what purpose are you talking to me for, not to offend?" |

"As I previously stated, the practitioners of elder magic in this day and age consider it a brute force. In essence it is far from this ideology. As all magics that which you control possesses the capacity for grace that is so evident in others. The norm for the shaman is to use it as a raw force; yet you use it as a gentle change. That is what attracted me. You are different; you possess the ability to enact change." Finishing the last of the Sparkling Grape Juice, Cielet figured it was almost time to finish this. "I will teach you. Under my tutelage you will learn more about elder magic than any shaman to date. And as you learn, so shall I. I will teach you the limits of metaphysical sight; I will show you how far to go before your sight is irreparably impaired." Standing, motioning for the girl to follow, she continued. "But first I have something you must do." Walking out of the bar, the woman spoke, "I have goals. And certain factions have intents that run counter to my goal. If they should gain power it would be a blow to my efforts. Therefore, I need a person among them. When I restore to my power the ability to warp I will be in touch. Until then, child, I need you to get close to Hadrian. He and his Black Dragons are a potential thorn in my side, and I would like them nipped before their vine grows. Hadrian himself is a powerful practitioner of the elder magics. You could learn from him. "But always remember: I offer more; I offer eternity." |
