We once had a debate forum on here and it got used for a while but then died out and was removed.

A member has shown interest in having this come back but I want to know if anyone else wants a debate forum on here. So vote in the poll and feel free to explain why you would or would not one on here.

Can't the rant area and debate area be used for teh same thing? I understand that ranting is currently just for people to vent out whatever thoughts they had but it more often then not brings up debates.

However, if we're talking a whole separate debate forum I have to register my disgust with such places. It commonly brings such "ethical" questions like gay marriage and religion which no matter what you say there will always be someone who comes along to throw a stick into the gears to prevent it from being a thoughtful discussion. I always hate seeing it spiral out of control and sometimes watching the topic veer off into some flamefest of stupidity.

It's not that I'm not comfortable with having such topic discussion around, I just don't think it's a wise idea to make this accessible in the least. You might be able to promise that you can keep it clean but I've heard it so many times before and I don't think Rapture will be any different. Who really needs to talk about these things anyway?

Yeah you bring up good points. Someone else brought it up so If figured I make a topic to see if any support for it exist so I can at least say I didn't just say no and not listen to anyone like so many others do.

Yeah I know what you mean and those type of topics came up when it was around so yeah it got heated at times so I wasn't going to promise anything because I woudl be lying to say I could promise anything. :P

the thing is, is such a forum usefull?

For a good debate one must not be on the internet, better to have the debate irl and transcript it onto here ^^

But it could be possible to bring such a forum back I seem to remember Vh-dono enjoying being on there ^^

Ah, minna san, do you want to know my opinion?

Honestly, the present areas in this Forum are enough to have any kind of (constructive) debate.

Not so long ago we did have trouble with a religious debate (we all remmeber all the trolling running then...) and if a debate dedicate area will bring such back, I am not supportive of the idea.

We can debate in Rant or Chit Chat if a given topic is brought to atttention and is interesting.

I remember having nice debates on Anime Reviews back in BZFFS II and they were kept civil, if heated sometimes.

But Morendo is right, some debates become sour fast, especially when some topics are brought up, and that is not desirable, though I disagree with his saying that we do not need to talk about this or that.

Exchange of ideas is always good if respect is kept.

I remember having a good time debating in the First Forum, and the subject was religion then but it was kept very respectful, and the ones participating were always serious and kept to the subject.

My own personal opinion: No, there is no need for a debate dedicated separate forum.

I am always ready to a good exchange of ideas :voidhawk:

Unless people specifically start complaining about being uncomfortable when a debate happens, there's no need for a separate sub-forum.

Okay, no. Here is why I think we don't need to talk about it. Why do people debate on religion? What does it matter what people believe? Do you truly believe there are people looking to be converted to different religions on message boards? Is it really possible to provide stimulating information that can't be better researched at a more professional place? No, not really. None of these things matter. If you are someone looking for religious advice on a general message board, you're looking in the wrong[/] place. And if you hold all the answers you really shouldn't be on a chat board anyway. Go tell the world of all the glorious knowledge you hold or something.

Secondly having these places can create thick tension among people who hold different viewpoints. Anger and loathing might drag onto other parts of the board and still spark flames in other parts all thanks someone and another standing on opposite sides on "delicate" ethical questions. People might also be annoyed by what things another person is doing outside of the debate forum and start yelling at them on there. Like take me with you, I don't like this "Minna-san" thing you have going. Do you really talk like that? Speaking broken Japanese? Is that cool or something because I just don't get it. Also what's up with the a smiling emote with blood stained batwings? Is that cute? Maybe. Guess I just don't understand.

What I'm trying to say is that if people are already upset with someone over something silly like that things like this could push them over the edge when a certain topic comes up in the debate forums. Debate forums are rarely kept a place for sane theological discussions. It sounds like you )voidhawk) said you agree with me that debate forums can be bad places. For some reason you're also telling me that it can be a good place. I know this already of course. I know that there are some good debate areas.

Tomodachi ( :P )

I will not quote...this makes the postings huge :P

Even religious debates can be very insightful sometimes, but they will always depend on the ones participating.

I recall Sarissa (you probably does not know her, but the old members suelly will) and her debates and ideas. She was very nice on her postings over the threads she initiated.

Debates are always construtive if people can keep their minds open. I had a very good relatiionship with Sarissa back then and our viewpoints were really different (she is Muslim and I am a Kardecist). I miss her.

Another thing is, religious debates are just an exemple. Any debates can turn sour if the ones debating are intent on problems.

Bujt yes, if the ones debating cannot keep at least civil to each other, then a possible interesting debate turns into a tasteless exchange of aggression.

But you already showed you know that

Ah, this thread itself is a kind of debate, so really why the need of a subforum for such things.

Neh Minna San, I think most of you reading this will agree with that...

I honestly posted this topic with the idea of it being rejected as I didn't think there wasn't any desire to have it on here again.

I felt rants and Chit chat can both house debate threads as they come but just figured I ask anyway to see if i get surprised which I did not.

The poll vote is 1 for and 6 against fyi.
