How do crit misses work? Is it like a crit confirm where we're trying to beat the enemy AC? I tried looking it up but I realized that they're house rules. Straight rules just seem to say 1=Miss, 20=hit, and your weapon has an overlapping crit hit range.
You are pretty much dead on rasen. The crit miss stuff I do is purely house rules. The strict rules is a 1 just means miss and a 20 just means hit. I find that it is fun if you treat a natural one as the character has made a mistake or something ha happened which makes them worse off than if they hadn't done anything.

The basic rules I have used (which I produced from thin air by the way so I don;t have something for you to read) is that on any roll other than an attack roll. Getting a 1 means an inconvenience occurs that is up to the GM's discretion; The thief breaks his pick in the door and loses the thieves tools they were using, the ranger finds a second set of tracks and follows that instead. The fighter fails his reflex save so badly the trap does maximum damage to them. Just some sort of failure on their part which actively inconveniences the party or at least the one who rolled a 1 in some way.

For attack rolls I treat it a bit differently by adding a degree of failure roll. This is just a d20 with no modifier. Depending on how low you roll in this d20 different things will happen at the GM's discretion based on situation. An example of things that I have happen, though where they end up on the d20 is entirely up to you:
- Flat Footed for a round
- Prone for a round
- Drop Weapon
- Damage self for half damage roll
- Damage self for full damage roll
- Damage ally in threat range for half
- Damage ally in threat range for full damage roll
- Weapon, shield or other piece of equipment breaks
- Enemies who threaten you all get an AoO

Finally, in the failure roll, I have it set up that a natural 20 negates your crit fail. So no bad thing happens, or the bad thing is so minor that it doesn't inconvenience you substantially. Eg, your character sneezes or something. But if you get a natural one on your failure roll I move on to another table. Just like if you get 2 20s in a row I move to this table:

http://www.dandwiki.com/wiki/Variant_Criticals_%283.5e_Variant_Rule%29

On this table you roll a d100 and whatever injury you roll is inflicted on the one who failed (Just so you know, In the case of critical hits, I treat it is double damage, +another effect because it is difficult to get to this table but for crit fails I just do the table as is). So you injure some part of your body and take full damage from your own or a nearby enemie's attack roll if you get a double natural 1 on an attack roll. In the case of a character being immune to one of the injuries, you roll again. Only creatures that are immune to criticals altogether are immune to soft spot (double damage of either the failur or a threatening enemy's damage roll at the GM's discretion) so even if the monster is a gelatinous blob with no limbs or organs or something, there will always be something at least that can be taken from the table.

I know that was a lot to read but I hope it cleared it up a bit for you.

The Big Bad Wolf
DwarfQuest plot

The Dwarven Kingdom of Goldcrest, built under Skysunder mountain, has been at war for decades against the Kingdom of Welchspired, which resides under the Cracked-Peak mountain to the east.

The city of Coppersoil, which resides above ground, at the base of Skysunder, nearly fell at the last attack. Tired of this long war, the king sent out champions to deal with the problem.
