An hour after leaving the Del Linduil docks, the river system was already looking more of a flowing swamp than anything. Darius found himself standing on the middle of a raft being guided by its operator, Daniel. The lad was less than 20 summers old, with reddish tan skin and a bare chest, wearing breathable wool trousers. Daniel had apparently been navigating through this swamp for years, and seemed to have made quite the living out of it. He traversed the swamp by subtly moving his feet and pushing on the bottom of the swamp with a long wooden pole. Varus the Seer had given Darius specific information on who to seek out to find a certain unknown monster that had been ravaging and destroying boats that passed by its lair, located past the village of Mudcreek in the middle of the marshlands. The day was already hot and humid as they slowly drifted past lilly pads, mud hills, and the occasional Alligator basking. It would take a few more hours to get to Mudcreek, even with the wind with them. Edited by POOHEAD189, Aug 16 2014, 06:27 PM.

I Get things Done, by being Big and being Bad.

Darius stood there, gently rocking side to side with the say of the ship. He brought a self rolled smoke to his lips, and shook out a match as he puffed. Smoke rolling out of his nose and mouth. He sighed and looked about the place. Thinking on his situation. Another monster hunt, another day I can put food in my belly. He took a long puff and looked back at the boy. "What do we have, a hour yet Danny?" He asked, his voice was gruff, his stare cold. He turned back before the boy could answer, and took a seat near the bow of the boat. He looked into the water and flicked ashes from his smoke into it. I wonder what kind of beast it will be.... The sun is high and its making me sweat, the insects buzz and flutter about like they were after a fresh corpse... and with the smell of this swamp? Hard to say there isnt at least a few unlucky, poor swimmers feeding this crude place. The sooner to Mudcreek the better. Though... given a place with that kind of name.. He shook his head and tossed his finished cigarette into the lake. It made a unceremonious ploop noise. He watched it sink, while he adjusted his long hair. He turned back to the boy and smile. Not a friendly smile, but the smile of a man who was paid to kill... it didnt matter how 'nice' he was trying to look. You cant wash off the stink of a killer. |

Daniel pushed along the bottom of the swamp with the pole with practiced ease, and he looked back to Darius as the man spoke. Dark featured and fit, Daniel was still no real warrior. But he must have seen quite the number of characters along his travels as a guide, only showing the slightest bit of hesitation at the killer smile. "We have a few more hours but, they'll pass by quickly." he told him, before glancing up river. "Last time I went through here there was some...massive thing that caused an undercurrent under us. Might run into it again." He let it sink in, before lancing back at Darius once more. "Not sure how long you've been here, but these swamps always have something you've never seen before." Darius nodded and enjoyed the ride. He thought on what could be large enough to cause a under current like that... he wondered if that is the same beast he is hunting now. "Something had to be large to do that... I have been though the swamp once or twice before, but I never liked the place enough to linger much. Tell me, what kind of things have you seen?" He asked as he waited, nothing passed time like a good story. |

"Well..." Daniel said, chuckling. "I've seen a fair amount here. I see those all the time." The tribesman nodded at the Alligators basking on the bank. "I've seen serpents, too. One time I saw one coiled in a tree. Big enough to swallow me whole if I got too close. I've seen jungle cats, thing with tentacles, long necked things big enough to knock trees over, and things I can't even describe. Fish bigger than you." He shook his head. "My people pay homage to the land, and these creatures more or less leave our villages alone. But the fair skinned people from up north...they don't know when they're getting into a predator's territory. It's why most stay in the city." the young man said, back muscles moving prominently as he guided the raft. |

He responded with a short nod. In truth he didnt care much of what the kid had to say, he was used to his type. The whole, 'I can tell your not from here' vibe was far too obvious for his like. He continued to watch the water. Darius wasnt worried about fish, or alligators, or even big cats and snakes. He was worried about the monstrous things that lurked beyond that. "what else have ya seen?" He asked as he watched the trees drift by. |

Daniel began telling a few tales. To his credit, his tone was casual and friendly. An hour or so later, Darius would notice a massive swelling in the water ahead of them. And a spiked fin sliced across the surface of the water, before dipping below again. All of the Alligators floating along the sides scurried up the banks to keep away from whatever it was. Daniel noticed the fin and massive underwater shadow too, but it was too late to pull his pole up. The large shadow swam right under them, the pole snapping from it's bulk. Luckily, the thing didn't notice it. The pole was long but it must have been like passing by and breaking a twig. |

Darius got up and looked over the side of the boat, a child like awe on his face. "I wonder if thats the beast..." He said as he looked at it, half of him wanted to go for his spear, the more sane of of him made him sit back down and shake his head. "That the thing thats been killing folks?" He asked first, spear in hand. He wasnt going to kill something with out knowing if he was going to get paid for it. |

"I guess it's possible but, whatever you're going after I thought was hours ahead of us." Daniel said. To his credit he seemed only a bit uneasy, probably as used to these beasts as he had already hinted at earlier. The raft swayed from side to side, almost as if it was letting Darius know just how flimsy it was compared to this leviathan below them. It was his decision to attack or not, but if he didn't, perhaps it would disappear peacefully? There was a good chance this thing was what Daniel had referred to earlier on his previous trip. The tree canopy hanging over the river scattered the sunlight, giving off a staggered yet sheltered look to the sinewy form under the water.

Darius nodded to the boatman and looked as the beast swam on, he admired it, but he wasnt going to go hunt something that he wasnt getting paid to kill. HE simply eased back into the boat to rest up more "Well, looks like he wins this round" He joked knowing full well he didnt have the gear to take it on. He simply closed his eyes to take a nap. |

Daniel gave him the smile of a friend, as if he enjoyed Darius' sudden humor. The hours passed swiftly and the beast disappeared long before that. It wasn't long, perhaps middle afternoon, when they made it to Mudcreek in all its splendor. The tree canopy was much thicker, as were the mudbanks that framed the river system. Beyond a particularly large mudbank was a fragmented island with shanty houses with boats tied to low wooden docks everywhere. Moss had invaded this small town and it seemed to have been successful in its conquest. The houses were made of timber, and most of them were on stilts with large porches, lanterns hanging by each door to keep light in the near constant gloom.

Darius yawned and put one foot on the bow of the little boat and looked out at the town. He smiled to himself as he rolled another smoke and stuck it to his mouth and puffed on it. Letting the smoke roll around him, his eyes looked the place over much like a hawk. He didnt like what he saw, it was hot, sticky, smelled, and looked like crap. Life in a swamp, or so he thought to himself. "Looks like this is the place." He grinned back at Daniel and smiled some. "You sure there isnt some prettier Mudcreek that I am supposed to be at?" He chuckled a bit and waited to dock, eager to get on with his work. |

Daniel chuckled, giving a knowing grin as he looked at the quickly approaching town. "Well it's not much to look at" he admitted. "But if you want to slay swamp beasts, best start here." Their raft slowly drifted through a smaller river flow that led to a large rundown but well used wooden dock. At the foot of the dock, a 7 foot Alligator basked, a sliver of the suns rays penetrating the tree canopy onto it. There were various smaller islands with huts surrounding this larger one. It seemed like they had stopped at the central hub. Daniel waited there patiently for Darius to be prepared to set off. It was 2 silver for the boat ride. (Darius owns 5 Gold, 12 silver, and 5 copper/bronze coins.) Edited by POOHEAD189, Sep 6 2014, 07:46 PM.

"Thanks" He said giving a quick nod. He set down two silver and three copper. "A tip for good company." He said with out ever facing him, rolling another smoke. Loading it and puffing as he made his way to the village center. He hoped someone would be waiting for him, if not, he would simply search for his contact. He made off at a quick pace. |

Daniel gave him a farewell wave and set off again, seeing no one around who needed transportation at the moment. The townhouse was large for such a small village, though compared to city buildings it would be dwarfed in size. Standing on sturdy timber stilts over the muddied ground, the porch was reached by 5 steps on stairs. Darius could see one person outside at this moment. Not exactly a short man, but on the shorter range of average height. He leaned against the wall next to the door. With longer unruly hair and fierce dark eyes, he wore a single edged sword at his hip. He had on peasant trousers, though his armor was a sleeveless breastplate of very sturdy burgundy scale mail with a matching Haidate. He wore a sarashi over both of his hands and forearms, leaving his fingers unwrapped. All in all he seemed to fit the look of a sellsword. He merely glanced at Darius as the man approached. Darius could speak to him or head inside. The door was cracked open and oil lamps were lit within from the gloom.
