Silence. It seemed even the forest near the familiar cabin stood in vigil, a cloudless sky holding in place dark and shivering stars that lacked the soul to shine. There was no wind tonight, as though the trees were holding their breath. That was all. The only movement came from two companions, an animal and a young man, both as quiet and still as the world around them. The man's cloak fluttered behind him, bearing the signs of use and concealing a missing hand. Upon his shoulder rested a magnificent bird, although the animal no longer resembled its former self. Feathers, once a bright scarlet, now appeared to be molting, and black eyes stared sightlessly into the darkness. It was obvious that the two felt the wounds of hardship, although at least it was shared. Finally, the phoenix lowered its head and crooned quietly, as though attempting to express some kind of empathy with his companion. Lysander's entire world had changed in the course of an afternoon, but he was more concerned about Kainin, looking to the other for some sign of what they were supposed to do now. |

Kainin stood in front of the small cabin looking pensive. Abel had been the one person he trusted to know what to do next. Even in this chaotic world, Kainin never thought the wisest could fall to something as petty as a surprise attack in their own home. But now it had to be accepted. Even if Abel had fallen, his brothers remained and had to be dealt with. And worst of all, Babel still held the tomes of creation. Even if he couldn't use their power, that man could not be allowed to keep them. "Lysander.." Kainin began hesitantly. "I know Daenai and Abel were your friends, but I have to be selfish here. I need to find Babel. Vengeance can wait until the power to destroy the world is out of the hands of one who might ever use it. When that is over.. maybe.. just maybe we can find the one who did this. And just maybe we can make them pay. For Daenai, for Abel, for holly... and everyone else." |

Lysander crowed again, ruffling his feathers. He seemed to agree, or at least understand. After all, his loyalty lay with the only one left he could trust. He could not speak in words, but he gave Kainin a bob of his head. All members of the situation had gone their separate ways– Clef and Holly to the Elflands, Belberith with them, Babel to gods-knew-where, the avatar's location was anyone's guess. But they had one clue– after visiting the shrine, one last memento of Daenai's dying culture remained in his hands; a broken sword, the twin to the fallen Dragonborn's. Parts of the puzzle that he needed to put together to defeat Babel. The two pieces, placed in his bag, could hold the key to the his next destination. |

(subtle...) "Holly will call on me if she needs, so long as she still has that scroll. But for finding Babel... I am not sure how to start. I think the dragon shrine may hold all the secrets I need though. Both to their power, and to what he is doing..." He decided that the shrine was likely the best location he could go for now. It wasn't with Babel in mind that he looked through the ruins before, perhaps witht hat purpose he could see something he missed. |

He was some distance from the shrine already, and wandering any further down this road at this time of night was probably not prudent. To add, their day had been long and arduous and they would need to rest if they wanted to have strength to continue. |

"Thats enugh for the night. We should turn in." Kainin gathered a little kindling and asked Lysander to provide a light to it before lying down wihout having eaten. After today he didn't have much of an apettite. Mabe.. just maybe tomorrow would be better. |

Lysander cooed and swooped down low over the kindling, his long plumed feathers sweeping across the wood and lighting a small blaze. The bird fluttered down to Kainin and perched beside him, covering his beak with his wing but continuing to look into the woods with his beady eyes. ~ Dawn arrived after what seemed like forever. Nothing had bothered them during the night, and even in the early morning the atmosphere was utterly still. |

Kainin had not slept well. Every time he closed his eyes he had seen the faces he failed to protect. But even so.. with dawn coming he needed to get up, to go on and to complete his journey. Fighting his fatigue he raised himself up, staring at the dim light of the cinders as he yawned. "Lysander" He spoke up. "Dawn has come we should get going." |

With a soft croon, Lysander looked up from where he was pruning his dulled feathers, and blinked in agreement, stretching his little legs and fluttering onto Kainin's shoulder. It was hard to know where to go from here, but he had options. He could pursue the possibilities of the sword, visit an old haunt, or deduce where the next puzzle piece might be waiting. |

With a light scratch under the bird's chin Kainin began walking once more. He felt tired, he felt hungry, but all of that could wait. He needed to get to the shrine for now, after that he could figure out the rest. He marched with single minded purpose. |

It took him some time to reach the shrine again, but when he did, even in the short time he had been away, it had fallen into even greater disrepair. As though it simply lost the will to remain in existence. There was no life that remained there, and the wind that wafted sadly through the shrine was nostalgic. But as he neared it, it seemed to sense a connection, something it remembered, maybe remembering him. Lysander gave a soft whistle, feathers flaring. |

Kainin froze when he saw the devastation. The history of an entire people was here, he had seen it, and now, in the wake of a single night, it had been destroyed, erased, as though it had never been. Whatever connection he felt with this place, it was despair that he saw most as he slowly began walking once more moving into the shrine. |

As he walked through the shrine, he witnessed the remains of a once great civilization. With its last true living pillar gone, it was left to fade into obscurity. Even the statue no longer shined. But of course, it didn't mean that everything was gone– the shrine still held secrets in its remains. |

Kainin decided to head to Isei's shrine. It was were he found the most information and perhaps the most potent source of resonant energy he found before. If anywhere was going to survive and give some clues it would be there. Even if it was only clues about th eother half of that sword. |

Isei's shrine seemed to have lasted the longest. Even now, quite a while after the old sage's death, a kind of gentle energy remained there. Isei had lived a long life, and his magic was still alive inside the place he cared so much for. Even though the door hung halfway off half-rusted hinges, it still opened as though to welcome the visitor inside. |
