This might be a dead topic, by but I am having my say here. Firstly, I'd say that for the most part Jim Profit is even wrong on killing being a natural reaction. Well, at least not a human on another human. Our natural instinct as a species is coorperation, we are a species of weak individuals but very strong groups. We have a natural set of morals in order to cooperate, developed through evolution, and killing each other is one of the things we consider killing each other to be naturally immoral (Unlike killing other animals, but I don'twant to open that can of worms with POOHEAD again). Any act of a human killing another human is not "natural", it is a selfish action to please themselves. Anway, my view on the topic is that of course on an individual level killing is not justified unless it is in self defence, or other circumstances dictate (For example, I would not consider someone who killed someone who was asking to be killed due to being in a significant amount of pain a monster). On a war level, its a case by case basis. I don't think self defence can be used as the rule of thumb here, for starters that would go against the military action in Lybia which I believe to be very justifiable as it protects civilians. And how do you define self defence? Most countries are armed in the world, isn't invading to get rid of those arms tecnically self defence? Was Iraq self defence? as I say, case by case On Capital punnishment- NO. It is both morally objectionable to have people of no potential threat due to their lack of freedom to be killed in your name, and the simple fact is it doesn't work. Crime and murder rates are higher in area with capital punishment, it doesn't deter people. |
