Why are people assholes?

Seriously, why are so many people assholes these days? It seems like all they want to do is scare out their best friends and be complete and utter fucking douchebags. So what I'm wondering is, WHY? What possible reason is there?

My theory: they're all dumbfucks who never got mentally older than 12.

Elaborate. This is a discussion, not a spam topic.

Well, hard work breeds better more resiliant people and struggle brings strength and virtue.
But now that life is so easy, and the most scary thing we can think about is are we going to pass our math test or not, we have go back to our baser, more selfish and greedy instincts. If you have everything at your finger tips, why strain yourself with being a good person?

Odd, because it's not a troll topic. It has legitimate debate-ability. You can argue it being beacuse of a mental state or it being one of just random acts or even how the person was feeling that day.

The reasoning behind it is quite simple. Like most social creatures, Mankind works on a system of hierarchy, with an alpha individual at the top. Jerkass behaviour is our way of showing to each other our alphaness.

People are assholes for one of two reasons:

1. They get off from their asshole behavior causing all the non-asshole people around them becoming irritated

or

2. They are such an asshole that they don't know they are an asshole. "Heh, i'm so cool because I said that" no, you said that because you are an asshole. Asshole.

I generally try to ignore assholes in real life and on the internet because, well, they're assholes. It won't make them any more or less obnoxious than they already are if I speak up about it. Keep your cool and just ignore them, that's my motto 8)

well, i think its just because of the way some people are brought up. I mean you are what your parents taught you to be aren't you? but other then that I think that its just a way for people to cope

I think thats a bit of a cop out answer. Most people aren't deliberately assholes, and people can usually tell if they're doing the wrong thing.

I don't believe that "more" people are becoming assholes, just that people have always been assholes in the eyes of other people, and people will always be assholes, it's all relative. People thought Leonardo da Vinci was an asshole for the experiments he ran, and for the way he wrote. People thought that the crusaders were assholes. People thought that Jesus was an asshole. The world thinks that Hitler was an asshole. People think that the south park guys are assholes. Yes, these are all big name people, but the point I'm trying to make is that what makes someone an "asshole" is relative to your personal beliefs and opinions. You make think someone is an asshole, where as other people may believe that person is a revolutionary, or a comedian, or doing what they believe is right. You guys should watch the movie "no country for old men". The moral of that movie is that the world is, and always has been a bad, rough place, but as you get older and go through different stages in life you get different perspectives on life and the world feels like it's falling apart around you, when in reality not that much has changed
