There were mostly specialty shops. Butcheries, bakeries, a blacksmith, a bar, and a botanist were some of the more prominent places around. There was also this shady looking place without a sign. In other words, Roan seemed focused on remaining as self sufficient as possible, there weren't too many things that'd indicate trade with the outside world.

David wasn't all that surprised that there seemed to be a self sufficient society. Based on how problematic getting through that gate was, he didn't expect there to be many merchants passing through. Given the time period he based his knowledge of the Griswold on, it seemed logical that small community based economies would be predominant here. He was a little curious about the shady place without a sign. After all, what is more titilating than a good mystery. Although he recognized that he lacked currency if it was indeed a store, he decided that it was worth taking a look inside.

There was a rickety, weather worn wooden door with a slot at the eye-level. A lump of indistinguishable metal sat where a doorknob would. The door was also locked. Venture further or go on to the South?

So are you going to just stand there or what? That locked door's not going to give, although it did look like there might be people inside.

[ah, misunderstanding, I thought you meant there was more of this district I had not yet seen.]

David had no intention of breaking and entering and figured that if the door was locked then there was unlikely to be anything worth going to see. There was no telling what the purpose for this building was but it was best to leave it for now. The last thing he needed was to find out it was some religious building after going inside. Stepping on as few toes as possible was ideal at the moment.

David decided to head back south and explore the military area. He had certainly never been much of a fan of any organized military but he had named himself a warrior after all so best to see what kind of things he may or may not have to contend with at some point. The prepared people are never surprised after all.

The militia complex was immediately to the right of the Hall of Burgess. What was immediately visible was a set of training grounds with various practice weapons and targets. To the side of that were a series of small houses connected together. Those were probably the barracks. Finally, on the end of the barracks closest to David was a much larger building. It looked rather important.

David decided to continue his exploration. He was here to learn as much as he could after all so he decided to take a look inside the important looking building.

It looked like a reception area. There was a man behind the desk with papers scattered all over it. Also, the room felt very cramped. And the floors were smoothed stone, which was much nicer than the wooden flooring of the buildings he had previously been in.

David tried his best not to make many assumptions but how nice this building was seemed to imply that military strength meant a great deal to this country. He approached the counter fairly casually.
"Hi there. We're sort of new to town and were just kind of looking around hoping to find out a bit more about it. This is the military sector right?"

The man looks up. He was the tidy sort. Well... as tidy as possible in a setting such as this. He rubs his eyes.
"Yes, this is the 'military district.' What can I help you with?"

David hadn't thought all that far ahead. He was just interested in learning some of the structural things fro now. Get a better sense of the world in which he had been placed.
"Well I am something of a travelling warrior and am not terribly familiar with Griswold's military. I am somewhat interested in its history to be honest, is there anyone I can talk to about learning a little more?"

"History? We don't 'ave time fer things like that with that damned Black Knight roaming the place." He spoke matter-of-factly, like everyone should know what he was talking about. Which they probably did. Except for you.

"Black knight? Sorry, again we are out of town, could you explain?"
The black knight, that sounded like it had potential to be this place's mysterious threat that David would theoretically be expected to eliminate before being whisked elsewhere. At least his placement here was beginning to make sense in the context of everything else that had happened. Hopefully, this black knight which was causing apparent problems would be open to reasonable dialogue. After spending all of yesterday fighting for his life David realized now more than ever how valuable diplomacy could be.

"You o' all people should know then." The man leans closer, looking both ways. "Outside of town, there's been this real 'sterious knight goin' 'round. 's been leavin' a trail o' bodies wherever it goes. Anybody that's gone out in the past month 'ave all never returned. Well none, 'xcept that bloody wizard. But I'm surprised you're even 'ere if you came from outside." The man leans back in his chair and looks around warily, as if this ghost figure would show up and kill him just for mentioning the tale.
