"Huh, what?" A very disheveled lady sits up, rubbing her eyes. On a ten point scale, she'd be a 4. Of course that might partially because she was a hot mess at the moment. Then there was incoherent mumbling. Well, it did take awhile to really wake up. |

The lady pushes the hair out of her eyes. "Yeh," She starts, sleep still slurring her words a bit,"This is the gov building. What can I do for ya?" |

David resisted rearing back. There was undoubtedly alchohol and a late night here. Probably a very dull story as well. "Well I am looking for information on two individuals. Firstly on the black knight which has appeared around town recently, and secondly on an individual named Gabriel. I believe he is also known as the Wizard." |

"Ah yes. Well, the thing 'bout the Black Knight is that we don't know a thing 'bout it. Believe me, if we knew anything 'bout him, all of Roan would know. As for the wizard, mister Gabriel's been an 'habitant since the beginning, eh. A real 'sterious guy. His penchant to disappear and reappear with a load o' supplies unexplained 's lead to the whole village thinkin' of him as a wizard. Me, I think he just has a real big stash of valuables that he hasn't told a soul 'bout. Wouldn't make sense for any wizards to be here in the middle o' nowhere." Well, at least her accent wasn't as thick as most others. |

Not as thick as others but his tendency to arbitrarily skip syllables was still annoying. David as able to ignore it up until he said 'sterious and then he involuntarily frowned for a moment. After his moment of displeasure he was able to move on without incident though. There was a grain of something very interesting there though. Something that was a major difference to his own timeline. Firstly, magic seemed to be acknowledged here. practitioners of magic appeared to exist and favour urban environments. Secondly, magic wasn't at all a taboo art like in his own. Anyone who claimed to be capable of magic in his own timeline would likely have been burned for the claim. Magic's existence was definitely something to look into in the future if he was to be here for any extended period of time. Moving on from the question of magic, David didn't really learn anything new. Very little was known about this black knight and Gabriel was known as wizard because he was able to do what people would conceive to be impossible around here. The resources were an interesting twist rather than scientific accomplishments as David had suspected, but it came down to essentially the same conclusion. No matter what way David looked at it, it appeared to come down to asking Gabriel directly. "Thank you for that. Before I go, are you are sure there isn't anywhere that I can go to learn more about the black knight. I have a strong feeling I may run into it before long." |

"Nay. Real enigma. Shows up out of fuckin' nowhere and starts killin' folks left 'n right. Methinks that anybody that might know 'bout the Black Knight are either out o' the area or dead." She shrugs and begins organizing the sprawl of papers scattered across the desk. "It was no problem. Actually did me a favor there, wakin' me up. And I were you, I wouldn't go out o' town. You should be safe in the walls." |

David nodded in agreement. "Thank you for what you could tell me anyway. Now I'm afraid I have an appointment, enjoy your day." He decided to o back to where they were supposed to meet Gabriel and wait for him if he wasn't already there. On his way he considered what he knew so far. So the Black Knight seems to arbitrarily kill almost anyone who leaves the village. Gabriel is excluded from this thus is likely related somehow. His motives are difficult to decipher, after all, he shows interest in science so I can't tell whether he identified my prosthetic hand as a weapon or merely foreign technology. Regardless, the man is undoubtedly suspicious. His ability to bring in resources from nowhere is likely explainable but being ignored by the Black Knight is not. Next we have why I was unnaffected by it. I was only out of town for about an hour or so, but still, the local seem to believe that anyone who is outside of town will meet him. I doubt that the Black Knight could be one of the townspeople though. Someone like Gabriel who had the time to simply bump into me in town couldn't have the watchful eye to kill everyone who leaves. The only way that it could makes sense that Gabriel is the Black Knight is that Gabriel's serendipitous meeting with me was premeditated and orchistrated to seem that way. hat said, the only way the Black Knight could be one of the townspeople is if they had a cult network of information so that they were able to know when they had to leave the village and don the armour. This means that Gabriel is either the night himself, or part of this information network who tips off the Knight. When it comes down to it, he has to be connected. It is too unlikely that he is arbitrarily ignored by the Black Knight for it to be coincidence. |

The day was much brighter now, which hurt David's eyes after he's been inside for longer than expected. After a brief walk, he saw Gabriel standing by the gates with an armful of papers, most likely the ones from yesterday. Standing across from him was a city guard, and they seemed to be in heated discussion. As he approached, the topic of the conversation became quite clear. "-can't I leave? I cannot perform my studies within the city walls. I need to open space of the outdoors." "Oh, you wanna go out an perform more magic, eh? No way. We've 'ad enough of your 'studies.'" "Would you rather have me disturb everyone in the town by performing my work here?" "No, but you could always stop that nonsense an' get a real job." "I have a real job." |

David interjected curiously. "Why are you so intent on preventing him going outside?" There had to be a reason for the resistance beyond a fear of supposed wizardry, surely. |

"Why? WHY? Because if we open the gates, the Black Knight might be able to get in the town! That's why." "That's your entire reason for keeping me fenced in like some farm animal? Sometimes the people in this town make me question my faith in humanity." Gabriel replies, rubbing his eyes. "Don' you be startin' with me, wizard." "I'm not starting anything." "You best stop startin'." "Goddammit." |

"Do you see him from up on that wall? I doubt that he could get in from you opening the gate for a second if he isn't even in visual range." He tried to be logical about this, maybe he could get through to them. |

The guard up on the wall looks around for a bit, using a telescope too, just to be sure. After a few minutes, he signals something to the other guard. "Err, we don' see anything, but from what I've heard, the Black Knight is like a ghost, he just shows up outta nowhere. So there." Man this was a stupid conversation. Gabriel seemed to be in deep thought and Shana was intent with her listening as ever. |

This was getting ridiculous. "If he was a ghost who could just appear what makes you think a wall would keep him out? Trust me, the Black Knight is nothing but a man who is great at telling tall tales about himself." |

The guard's mouth twisted in frustration, but he could see there was no point in argue the facts anymore. "Alrigh' then, your funeral. OPEN THE GATES, LADS!" The city gates open up swiftly, creating another dust cloud, which David, Gabriel and Shana are all shoved through. They land a bit roughly on the ground, dust covered their throats and noses as the doors are firmly shut. They'd have to stay outside for awhile now. |
