Perhaps he is teaching her how to read.

David thought. It certainly wouldn't be a bad idea to learn that himself if the contract he signed earlier was any indication.

Wait a minute... It looked like there was something odd in Gabriel's hand. And there was something on top of the books, something wasn't quite right here.

David approached a little more speedily than he otherwise would have, at least to make his presence known. The vague description of these unknown objects was oddly foreboding after all.

They were what appeared to be playing cards. The cards were arranged in a pattern that vaguely resembled Solitaire. Shana turns around, spotting David and waves with a smile.
"Oh hello, Lad. I was just playing some Jung. I taught Shana how to play, and she's very good."

"I'm not surprised. If you can get past the language barrier she is rather smart."
When he had met her she was fighting off the unagi which was many times more dangerous than she after all so she clearly had a good head on her shoulders. David pulled up a chair and sat down with them. He wondered for a moment why he had felt so alarmed a moment ago when all that he had seen were some cards...

"Aye," Gabriel says, playing another card onto a rather large stack. "So how was your time spent frolicking in the village?" Shana meanwhile had focused her attention back on the games, her eyes hard with concentration. David could almost see the cogs moving in her head.

"Rather dull. I got a job as a messenger just to get some local currency and learned that nobody is allowed to talk about whatever that shady building near the back of the commercial district is for."
He actually enjoyed being able to see Shana focused. The looks that different people used when running through deep thought was always interesting to him.

"Getting a job as a delivery boy? I hear they get good pay." In Gabriel's hand there were three more cards. He places one in a short pile, but then seems to get stuck. Shana looks at his hand, then back to the piles and cocks her head.

David did his best to follow the game but without any knowledge it was impossible.
"I couldn't tell you. Heck, I only just learned what the currency was called let alone what it is worth. For all I know I am getting pocket change but either way it is a way to spend the time until I manage to track down the black knight."

"If the Black Knight exists, I doubt he'd be trackable. That's just going from the rumors." Shana points at a single card pile sitting sad in the top right corner. "I didn't think about that." The single card was put on top of another small pile before the other two cards were placed on top. The piles were subsequently stacked together back into a single deck. Shana stood to the side, a self-satisfied grin on her face for figuring the puzzle out.

David gave her a smile, hapy for her.
"Well it is a big if certainly, but the only part of the story which doesn't check out is where it came from. If this mysterious individual supposedly kills everyone who leaves then who saw him and then came back. And if he doesn't, well that just opens up a whole new can of worms about who is killing off the people."

"I remember the rumors originally spread from the Night Watch. Somebody claimed they saw a mysterious figure clad in black riding across the plains. Then people started disappearing when they left and you ca see how the rest goes. It could just be a group of bandits camped far enough away to avoid detection, but close enough to catch anybody leaving. It would make sense that such a group would be driven away by the arrival of the Triad, thus nobody's died when leaving since yesterday." Gabriel shuffles the deck in one of those Vegas-y casino ways before beginning to deal out the cards into piles again.

"I figured the same thing. With a battle like that it is going to be at least a few days if they do come back. Thing is though, I honestly don't care if there is a black knight or not. My first theory was that it was bandits or some other more plausible case but the fact is that the cause simply doesn't matter. What mattered to me is that people are disappearing and I may be able to figure out what is responsible and stop it. Whether it is a guy in dark armour or a bunch of guys with weapons makes no difference."
Silently David was surprised at the way he shuffled the cards. He wasn't sure if there were playing cards at this point in his own timelind but he definitely suspected nobody shuffled like that for hundreds of years.

The cards are dealt out and Gabriel hands the deck to Shana, who has a bright smile on her face. It was the excited kind of smile somebody got when they were looking forwards to destroying a challenge handed to them. She draws a card off the top and then sets off to work.
"Fair enough, if anybody could do it easily, it would be you."

"Well I don't know about easy, but I figure I at least have a better chance than most."
As they talked David did his best to try and learn the rules purely by observation.
