The God of Conquest
|
Every time David saw one of the people dressed in those black clothes it made him uneasy, made him watch them closely. After being here for a month he had mostly settled down from the culture shock but they still made him nervous. He suspected they were the members of the assassin's cult that Gabriel had told him about after all. He stared as the man walked passed him and continued to keep an eye on him until he had disappeared from view. |

David had a rough sketch of what Swarenson looked like, but over the past month he'd learned that the pictures given tended to be guides at best. But a man who looked kind of similar passed by sporting an impressive mustache and cut, clean hair. |

David called out to him as he passed, more to check that it was him than anything else. "Uh, Mr Swarenson?" |

The man stops and turns around. "Huh? Oh! You must be the messenger boy. Whatcha got for me today?" He hopped from foot to foot in a kind of happy dance. It was a mix of funny, sad and weird. |

Messenger boy... It annoyed David every time he heard that. In his own world he had been a university student and a good one. Even in this world barely a month prior he was a war hero. Now it was just messenger boy. He resisted the urge to sigh. "That is right. Here you are sir." He offered him the letter. |

Giddily, he takes the message, thanking David before leaving. David might not have liked the position, but it did have good pay for relatively little work. Turns out the amount paid to him was roughly equal to getting $400 a week back home. Too bad he really didn't have anything to spend it on. Luckily that was the last letter of the day, freeing him up to do whatever once he returned the mailbag back to the office. |

David took the bag back and headed back to Gabriel's home. He had agreed to let him study his technology some more later on today so may as well let him get it out of the way now. |

David walked into Gabriel's house to find Shana reading through one of his books. He couldn't tell from a glance, but it was probably something along the lines of Celestial Bodies and Their Place Among Us. She looks up and smiles, waving. "Hello David," she said in her somewhat stilted English. At this point she completely understood English both spoken and its grammatical rules, she just had trouble getting the syllables out, limiting her to short 3 or 4 word sentences for the time being. Gabriel was in the kitchen sipping tea. "Afternoon, lad." |

David gave Shana a smile. "Nice to see you are in a good mood." He was rather proud of how quickly she had picked up spoken language. Something about her being here made him feel a bit more comfortable when he saw her. She was the one thing which proved to him that he was not of this place. Within his mind she served as a connection to the outside world for him. He still hadn't ever really talked to her about it though. She had picked up reading the local language much faster than David had, he was still at a moderate level at best. |

Shana quickly returned to her reading. Apparently she didn't have anything more to say then. "David, you look a bit down, anything wrong? Tea?" There was another cup sitting helpfully next to the kettle. |

"Thank you." He responded with a nod and sat down. "I guess it is just that... Well I am still here. It isn't that there is anything wrong with your world but it has been over a month now. I thought I would have figured out what was going on and moved on by now." |

"Well," Gabriel says pouring a cup of black tea for his friend,"from the sound of what you'd been through before arriving here, I would rather stay in one place, at least for awhile compared to jumping around constantly in life or death struggles. Sure the people here are ungrateful idiots, but you could be a whole lot worse off." Gabriel returns to the table, setting the still hot but not fresh-hot liquid in front of David. "Besides, I doubt Shana would be able to learn English under your previous schedule." |

"I know, you are right. It is probably better this way, I just... I don't know. I guess I am just afraid that I have become complacent. I mean, nothing big has happened since just after I arrived, I have a steady job and even a little savings. I'm even mostly almost completely literate in this place's writing. It is all good stuff but I just worry that at some point I'm going to forget that this place, this world, isn't my home." He looked over at Sana quietly reading to herself. "And even if that wasn't so bad, I can't forget that I stole her from her home. Somehow, I need to take her back some day." |

"It' not so bad. Here, above ground. Home got boring. Sometimes." Shana shrugs before continuing. "Besides you have stars. We are not so lucky." |

"Well it is nice that you have at least found some joy in this accident." Her optimism was comforting but he still felt terrible about it. Even if she was happy he had still forced her onto a journey she wasn't supposed to be a part of. Then again, who's to say David was any more fitting for it.
