The God of Conquest

David checked to see if the mermaid was still with him. if so he picked her up and carried her to the village with him. If not he progressed there alone. |

The mermaid was standing off to the side, slightly behind David. For convenience's sake, she had been transformed by some mysterious force into a human. The metmaid's human appearance was that of a 20 year old woman. She stood at roughly 170cm tall. The mermaid was modestly endowed and a teensy bit chubby, but it wasn't highly pronounced. Her face was framed with golden brown hair that went down to her middle back. She had also been clothed and armed free of charge. Attached to her hip was a katana, and for some odd reason, she wore the outfit of a grocery store employee. Spoiler: click to toggle She looked over to David and smiled. David returned the smile. "Glad to see you aren't in any immediate danger of suffocating." He said jovially. "Since I'm not seeing much else, I suggest we take a look at the town." He began walking down the hill towards it. Still... he thought to himself happily this beautiful landscape is a welcome change from the monster filled ponds, ravenous beast filled office spaces and giant eel filled underwater cities. |

The mermaid just kinda tilted her head at the strange noises David made, but when she saw him go down the hill, she understood what his goal was at that time. She then looked at her feet. Okay. She could do this. David was doing it just fine moving across land. She picked up one foot, and... lost her balance and rolled down the hill, soared past David and stopped on her head at the bottom. Walking would definitely have to be worked on. |

David rested his forehead in his hand. How did I not see that coming. I love the little mermaid. David thought to himself as he hurried down the hill to help her up to her feet. |

A bit unsteadily, the mermaid gets back up onto her feet. Now to try this walking thing again. She lifts her right foot, not as high this time and moves it forwards a bit before losing balance and falling into step. Hey! She did it! Now for the next one. She redistributes most of her weight to her back leg and pushes off, making a second step, but falling again. That town was about 1.5 km away. This was going to be a long stroll. |

David took one of her hands to help steady her as she tried to walk. It would be easier if she had a little help after all. |

Progress was slow, very slow. Each step was a monumental task to be overcome. Walking is deceptively complex. You're constantly balancing yourself without even realizing it. She had to learn it all after living her entire in a vastly different environment. What would have been about a hour hour's walk took 4 hours. Thankfully, by time they were at the village, she had gotten down how to walk pretty well. She just needed to focus on the task, and she'd be able to move self sufficiently. Unfortunately, they had somehow arrived on the side of the village, farthest from the gate. |

How irritating. David thought as he began to lead her around the side to the gate. This would be a strange experience. Even if the inhabitants let them through the gate there was a good chance there would be a language barrier. David began thinking of what he could do for an endgame here. So far today had been a series of unexpected attacks and he only hoped there wouldn't be another here. |

They made it to the gates and from the top on each side, two guards sat, with bows at their side. The actual gates themselves were not that impressive. It was on the double door type, each was made of six logs tied together, with four making a square frame and the other two forming an X shape for support. It didn't look very secure, any decent, well trained force would merely be slowed down for a couple minutes. Either the craftsman here was rushed or poor. The guardsman on the right speaks up first. "Ey, what do you lot want?" What a nice fellow. |

"Oh good, English. That helps." David said mostly to himself out of relief. He looked up at them and addressed them formally. "Sorry to intrude, but my companion and I are somewhat lost. Would you happen to know where we are and if there is anywhere with food and beds nearby?" |

"Oi, these sods don't know where they are! Boy that's a knee-slapper if I 'eard one." The guard chuckles a bit before his face becomes serious. "You're in Griswold buddy, biggest nation 'round. It goes across... 5,000 kilos if I do say so meself. This village specifically is Roan. There's an inn, but we can't let ye in 'ere without erm... background checks. Ye see, we've been under attacks fer awhile now, an we can't let any spies in 'ere. Strictly business. Although a couple o' fools who don' even know where they're goin' probly won' be too 'ard to pass." |

David disliked being talked down to like this but for now playing dumb might be the best way to get through those gates. He was good at bluffing knowledge but people were more likely to help you if they thought you needed the help. "Right." he said slapping his forehead. "Of course this is Griswold. Sorry, had a couple of rough days and you begin to lose your way after a while. Anyway, what does one of those background checks involve? I gotta tell you our family history?" The tower guard looks up, trying to remember everything involved in the highly complex process. "Erm... Family History, Occupation and... any political affiliation? Got that memromised?" |

Got it memorised. Why did that sound familiar. Ah right, Axel. Dangit, stay on focus. David thought reprimanding himself for getting distracted at a time like this. "Well..." he began thoughtfully as he addressed the three categories. "I am David and this is my sister Shana" he didn't have a name and so simply came up with the first one he could think of. "She was born a mute, a condition that has ravaged my family line but an affliction I was lucky enough to avoid. We haven't had many people of note in our line I'm afraid. I have been trained to be a powerful warrior but in the recent past I have been travelling to find a home for my sister and I. As for politics..." He thought about this carefully. The wrong orientation would leave him an enemy. He examined the immediate situation to see what he could work from and bluff with. The civilization was likely early to late medieval based on the technology used in constructing this wall and that the men wielded bows which meant that there was a good chance that there was not a united government. He had referenced spies which meant that there were enemies of this united nation, united nations of the period tended to be under a single figure or family. Speaking of family he mentioned family line, that means that blood was important, likely a royal family, perhaps not a king or queen they may have another name for it, best to play it safe and use a more neutral term. Having considered all this David decided on his supposed political position and hoped he was right. "...I am willing to place fealty to the sovereign of this land if necessary but hold no strong ties to any nation until I find a home." |
