Kairyoshi Headquarters - City Outskirts
Nöhime

The city that surrounded the Kairyoshi Headquarters was typically a bustling place. While there were events unfolding outside, it was large enough that a large portion of people were unaware of the Oni and those battling it, particularly those on the opposite side of the city: Nöhime being one of them.

While she was employed as a Youkai hunter, she spent the bulk of her time off assignment within the city; outside of the Headquarters. It wasn't that she disliked the people, it was actually quite the opposite. She simply enjoyed the hustle and bustle of everyday life and she had grown too attached to it to not spend time absorbing it all.

On this particular morning, she awoke quite early and had taken a bath at the springs within the forest just outside the city. The flow of water was a calming melody; something that she naturally cherished being as attuned to the earth as she was. Re-dressing herself, she nestled up against a tree near the water and withdrew a book she had been reading for quite some time. It didn't take her long to become enthralled by the text and for the rest of the world to disappear.

The oni fell to its knees, blood pouring from its back in great red rivers as Katsuo carved at it. It tried to stand up, only to fall as its slashed tendons spurted more blood. It roared in pain and anger, its bull snout frothing as its eyes twitched wildly back and forth.

"You--you can't be human, none of you! You--"

"AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGH!"

A cracking scream from behind caused the oni to turn. Hayate was charging the demon once more, his eyes wild, his sword held high above his head. He lunged, putting his entire body weight into the strike.

"Rakuyo-ryu, Tobokuzan!" Hayate cried as his blade bit into the oni's shoulder, his hands pulling hard as his body fell forward. "Falling Tree Slash!"

The cut went from shoulder to hip, opening a gash wide enough to put your hand into. The oni's mouth dropped open as his lifeblood spilled out, spattering Hayate. The demon slumped...and yet, it was still alive.

Its one good arm lashed out, and Hayate was grabbed in an iron grip. He struggled, but the demon's muscles would not budge. Yet it did not crush him. The bull-like head leaned forward, its rancid breath ruffling his hair.

"Little fool." the oni growled. "If you would hunt us..." Blood dribbled from its mouth, as its skin grew pale and its body began to tremble. The wounds Ashura, Katsuo, and Kaze had inflicted had taken their toll, and the beast knew it. Death was not far. "Have...the strength..." The oni set Hayate down, almost gently. "To attack...from the front."

Like a falling tree, the creature crumpled forward. Its great bulk fell past Hayate, and when it hit the ground the earth trembled. With one last shuddering breath, the oni's eyes rolled back into its head, and saw no more.

Hayate, covered in blood and mud and sweat, fell back onto his rear, heaving for breath as if he'd been strangled. He looked up at Katsuo and Ashura, and the other man he didn't know. Then he lowered his head, and wiped his face on his sleeve.

Ashura

A well-coordinated combination of attacks brought the Oni to the ground. It roared and claimed that their strength couldn't be human and the outburst made Ashura chuckle. With it's dying strength, the beast grabbed hold of Hayate and more or less told him to be a man before finally releasing him and falling to the ground dead.

Ashura gave her weapon a yank to pull it free from the beast's legs before placing it back on her belt and hiding it via illusion as she normally did. Crossing her arms, she looked over the Youkai's corpse, giving it's head a light kick to make sure it was completely dead.

"My-my, he was a big fellow, was he not?" she asked, more in a rhetorical manner than anything else. "I trust your first lesson will be one you shan't soon forget?" she inquired, looking to Hayate who had been made quite filthy throughout the engagement.

So much happened to the oni that it was a bit hard for the thing to keep up. Ashura cut the back of its feet, Katuso cleaved open its back, it took a swing at Kaze, and Hayate came at it. The oni spoke saying they weren't human, making the veteran raise his eyebrow again. That was a new statement from something that was actually not human.

Hayate cut open its front, announcing his attack quite loudly. Kaze palmed his face, shaking his head. In its dying moments the oni grabbed Hayate, spoke to him, before dropping like a sack of dirt. Ashura gave the head a kick to make sure it was dead before speaking to the young man. Dull eyes narrowed briefly.

"What lesson, you two didn't teach him a thing." He growled as he shouldered his weapon. He wasn't exactly happy with the two, obvious by the glare of his good and ruined eyes. "You should of had him observe the beasts patterns first, weakened it, before letting him take a crack at it. Not just throw him in and hope for the best." He continued before gesturing to his face then to the corpses. "This is what happens when you don't know what you're up against." He finished, surprisingly enough he hadn't raised his voice. Yelling didn't accomplish anything, a calm voice was heard clearer than a loud one.

As he had expected, the group's attacks managed to bring down the Oni for good, and Hayate had even managed to work up the nerve to strike again before the deed was done. The Yagi looked down at his sword for a second as things began to settle, examining the dark blood dripping from the steel. Yokai blood. The same kind of blood that ran through his veins. They were the same, in a sense.

There was at least one difference between the Oni and himself though. He was much smarter. Subconsciously, he put his hand on his arm for a second, where the tattoo helping him to hold his human disguise was.

Cleaning the blood from his weapon, he returned it to it's sheath over his shoulder as Ashura remarked on the Oni's size. "They don't get much bigger." he remarked with a shrug. She followed up with a question for Hayate, but before the boy could answer the man interrupted, basically telling them of everything they had done wrong today.

"I don't recall asking for your opinion. But sure, sure. Whatever you say, Bright-Eyes." Katsuo said dismissively as he walked over to Hayate, who was sitting on the ground.

"On your feet, Kid. We're not quite done yet." he said. Looking over at Ashura to see if she understood, he turned to look at the area around them. "Our orders spoke of a 3rd Oni who ran off. We should take a look around to see if it's still hanging around somewhere. We'll look pretty stupid if we leave the job half-finished."

When Ashura kicked the oni, Hayate made a "tch" sound, gritting his teeth. He stood slowly, wiping the blood from his sword with cloth he'd retrieved from inside his shirt. He sheathed the blade, never once looking up. It was hard to believe he'd been so enthusiastic before, looking at him now.

As the other three talked, something fluttered down between them. It was a folded paper crow, which flapped its tiny wings to stay aloft.

"Kaa, Kaa! I'm Kaa, here to deliver further orders to Ashura, Katsuo, and Akibayashi, kaa! The third oni has been found, kaa! Another agent will take care of it, kaa. You are to bring Akibayashi back for review, kaa!"

Elsewhere...

The oni ran through the forest, nursing the bullet hole in its side. Screw that, chasing a farmer's cart wasn't worth going up against a regiment of gunmen! Even if they did kill all the humans, they'd be so full of lead afterwards who knew what would happen. So he'd chosen to get the hell out of there, unlike the other two. He'd find somewhere else on the road, somewhere with easier prey, not so close to the city. Out in the mountains, there was an idea--

The oni stopped, its ears twitching. Something was nearby. Something...powerful. It looked all around, but saw only forest.

"From the front."

The oni jumped back. Standing directly in front of it was...a boy? No, this was pretty much a full grown human, at least in his twenties. But he was still slender, and of course much smaller than the demon. He wore ragged peasant's clothes, and carried a long sword--an odachi--over his shoulders. His smile was unnerving...as were the yellow, cat-like eyes.

"Gonna run? A chase might be fun." said the young man. The oni readied his weapon. He'd smash this runt in one blow! So why was he trembling?

With a roar, the demon attacked.

A flash split darkness. The oni stood transfixed, its weapon still raised over its head. Then, with a crack, its body split in two, blood spurting everywhere. The two halves slid apart, just like fresh, butchered meat. Beyond the demon, the young man held his sword before him in one hand, the sheath clutched in the other. He looked unsatisfied.

"Ah. So boring." He gave the sword a flick, spattering the grass with more blood. He yawned, and began to walk away.

Ashura

Even after they had won, the club-wielding man insisted on chastising them for their methods, claiming that someone shouldn't just be thrown into the deep end and left to fend for themselves. Ashura couldn't help but notice the scars the man wore and as such, his hypocrisy. He went on about tactics and various ways to approach, sounding more like a scholar than a fighter.

Regardless, Ashura wasn't in an arguing mood and ignored his drivel. Katsuo offered a retort before helping Hayate to his feet. They were informed by another paper figure that the remaining Youkai was being taken care of by another agent and that they were to return to the Headquarters so the kid could be given his review.

"Good," Ashura exclaimed as she crossed her arms and looked toward the city. "This has been satisfying."

With a grin, she started back toward the gates and into the city.

Kairyoshi Headquarters - City Outskirts
Nöhime

While it normally took quite a bit to pull Nöhime from her books, the rustling nearby and the pounding of most certainly large footsteps drew her eyes to the source. A large and apparently wounded Youkai was running by, heading for the mountains. It was intercepted by a familiar face; Takenaka Ryuichi, the Hunting General. He was the go-to man in regards to combat and he had passed quite a large amount of his knowledge down to those employed by the Organization. Nöhime held a great deal of respect for him in particular because of this.

He and the Oni disappeared from view before long and she only spotted him again when he was walking back toward the city. She rose from he place of rest and started toward him with her belongings in hand, a light jog allowed her to catch up to him quickly.

"Master Takenaka!" she exclaimed with a comforting smile and a tilt of her head. "That was an awfully large Oni to be so close to the city," she began with a somewhat worried expression present upon her porcelain face. "Was there an emergency somewhere nearby?" she inquired, a quizzical bob of her head expressing her enthusiasm on the subject.

Kaze gave Katsuo a look of mild anger before he reined in his emotions. "If someone doesn't tell you how you screw up then you'll never learn." He replied as an origami crow wafted down into the group, giving the three orders to return to base. So they were part of the youkai hunters like him? They needed a chaperone so they didn't get any more recruits killed.

The woman didn't respond, she looked to be a noble. Of course she'd have the holier than thou attitude that went with it. He refrained from snorting before turning his attention to Hayate, who was being told to get a move on by the male. "This your first kill?" He questioned the boy. He hadn't seen the kid beforehand so he wasn't aware a lot of enthusiasm had been lost.

"Ah. Well. That settles that then." Katsuo said as they were joined by an origami bird who had been dispatched to tell them the 3rd Oni was no longer their responsibility. He wondered who had been sent after it, but decided it didn't really matter. Ashura had already started heading back, and he followed along after her.

"Come on, Kid. Hard part's over."

The big guy continued talking, but Katuso only shrugged his shoulders without looking back at him. He didn't really care what the man had to say. He didn't need some fool telling him what to do, they certainly hadn't needed his help to handle the Oni.

"That was good work, Ashura. I was right to take you at your word at how skilled you are." Katsuo complimented as he caught up to her. "Usually when I'm paired with someone, I have to handle most of the work, but I hardly had to lift my sword to bring the Oni down this time."

Hayato nodded when Kaze asked him if this had been his first kill, but didn't speak. He followed silently behind Katsuo and Ashura, head still bowed. As Katsuo complimented Ashura on her strength, the boy's fists clenched for a moment. When they finally uncurled, it seemed more like a forced gesture rather than one of relaxation.

The walk back to the headquarters was long, but uneventful. When they got there, however, the three found General Himura standing in the courtyard waiting for them. He took them in at a glance, his fox-like smile never faltering.

"Well now," he said, his gaze stopping on Hayate. "Looks like you got properly stuck into it, Akibayashi-kun--you don't mind "kun" instead of "san," do you?" Hayate shook his head. "Hmm." The general looked up at Katsuo and Ashura. "So...how'd he do?"

"Nope." The Hunting General never looked at Nohime as he spoke. He looked up at the sky as he walked, leaning back against the odachi across his shoulders. "Just a boring hunt." A breeze picked up, causing his long red hair to trail in streamers behind him. His eyes were half-lidded, as if he were almost asleep, and his expression somewhat blank. He yawned again, and rubbed his eyes with one hand.

"So boring these days. What's a guy to do for fun around here?" he said, though his voice was quiet. Probably just thinking aloud.

Kaze's hard gaze softened slightly when he saw the kid nod. A first kill was a harsh thing and could haunt a person all their life. "Don't dwell on it, it'll eat you alive. Also...don't let anyone say it gets any easier. Only a monster would say it." He said before giving the two people walking off a harsh glare. Those two were the type of people murderers came from, they didn't care. It had showed when they just told the kid to have at the oni, no pointers, no directions, just one helping hand and that was it.

He looked down on the corpses, frowning a bit. What were oni doing so close to the headquarters of the people who hunted them? Who knew what went through the beings heads. He sighed and followed after the group, entering the compound shortly after them. The leader was there and was addressing the three, he'd have to talk with him later.

Ashura

While Ashura tended to ignore everything around her, including the banter, Katsuo's comment on her skill obviously struck a beat with her.

"Of course," she replied, giving her hair a flick as her nose turned upward. "I am well aware of my skill; I do not require reassurance."

Her reply sounded almost cold, as if she hated hearing it. But, her expression quickly changed to one of what appeared to be glee.

"But, I certainly do not mind hearing it," she concluded with a quick giggle.

Once they arrived back at the compound, the Head General Himura was present, greeting them with a welcoming expression... at least that's what Ashura felt. He commented on Hayate's condition before looking to Katsuo and herself; asking how he did.

"Well, the boy lacks the finesse of a fighter, but I imagine it shall come with time," she began, placing a hand on her hip. "It is rare I see one so stricken with fear when opposing a Youkai, but at the same time, I suppose it is seldom I consort with commoners..." she stated, her words somewhat ambiguous near the end.

Nöhime

"Boring?" Nöhime questioned, a shocked expression plastered across her face. "For you to feel that hunting Youkai is boring, you must be very good at it, Mr. Takenaka... that's very impressive, sir," she continued, her eyes locked on to his face, her expression still one of shock, her hands clasped together in front of herself.

He seemed somewhat annoyed and it left Nöhime to wonder if it was because of her. While she respected the man highly, she didn't really know him very well; no one seemed to. But, it wasn't often that she caught him alone like this and wanted to absorb as much of the opportunity as she could. When he stated that he was bored, she decided to seize the opportunity.

"Um, master, if I may be so bold as to ask... um, would you like to perhaps get something to eat?" she inquired, the same expression and body language in place as before. "It would be an honor for me, master... if you're not busy or anything..." he lips contorted as she immediately assumed the worst. "Um, forget about it; I'm sorry... you don't have time for that..."

Katsuo laughed at Ashura's response to his praise. She had almost had him going for a minute there. "Duly noted. I look forward to getting the chance to see more of your skill in action." he said as they grew closer and closer to the Kairyoshi Compound. It didn't take them very long to get there, and once they had arrived, they found General Himura waiting for them, who asked them of Hayate's performance.

Ashura responded first, and Katsuo wasted no time in following after her. "He had a shaky start. But after that he managed to find his footing and contribute. He'll get the hang of it with enough time and experience, assuming he doesn't get himself killed before that." he said, basically echoing the woman's words.

"Ah. I see." The General looked at Hayate, who still had his head down. "Hey now, Akibayashi-kun? You did alright. Going up against a youkai isn't something everyone can do, and you managed it. Give it time, you'll get there." The man smiled...then looked a little worried. Hayate had started to shake, and his fists were tightly clenched.

Then, the boy threw back his head.

"HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!"

The kiai traveled up, up, into the sky. It might have been heard clear across the compound--even General Himura winced at the volume. Then Hayate looked him in the face. His eyes were still wide, and he still looked a little uncertain, but when he spoke there was no question that his boundless energy had returned.

"Thank you for your kind words, sir!" The boy bowed deeply, arms snapping straight at his sides. "I realize now, that I am weak! But I promise you--I, Akibayashi Hayate, will become the strongest of all the Kairyoshi!" Then he stood up, and turned to face Ashura, Katsuo, and Kaze. He threw himself into a series of bowing up and down, to all three of them.

"Ashura-dono, Katsuo-dono, and sir! I promise, next time I won't hold you back! So please, forgive my weakness!" Then he finally stood straight, and raised his fists up in front of his chest with a smile. "Now, I shall go clean myself, and then I will begin training immediately!" He turned and ran off towards the barracks.

"Hoo..." General Himura said, watching the boy go. "Definitely strong in spirit, isn't he?" The General too turned away, and began walking back towards the administration building. "It makes me wonder...I'd like to see if he can do it." He looked back over his shoulder at the others. "Well, you've all done well. And Gufuu-san, I see you've met our "future strongest" as well? I hope you all become good friends. Until the next mission, then?" With that, he left them to their own devices for a time.

Ryuichi looked at her from the corner of his eye when Nohime asked if he wanted to get a meal with her. As she fumbled over her words, he suddenly smiled. It was a bright smile, with a wild quality to it, showing off sharp, wide teeth.

"Food, huh? Sounds nice." He turned back to the path, adjusting his odachi so that now it stuck out over one shoulder. "I guess it's your treat, then." He looked back at her expectantly, and his pace slowed so that she could more easily keep up.

The two gave their assessments on the boy, basically labeling him as a greenhorn. What were they expecting, especially after he confirmed it was his first kill. He shook his head after Katsuo's little speech. "Assuming you two don't get him killed..." He muttered, just loud enough for the two to hear. After that the general addressed Hayate, who seemed to be shaking.

The loud exclamation made him slowly raise his hand up and dig at his ear with his pinky to stop the ringing. "At least he's got a good set of lungs..." He grumbled, decent breathing was good for combat. After that boundless energy was flowing from the boy, who was bobbing so much at the three. "Inexperience shouldn't be considered a weakness. Train hard, Akibayashi-san." He stated as the kid ran off. He shook his head, a bit of a smile tugging at his lips. To be that kind of youth once more wouldn't be a bad thing.

"Yes, I technically met him just as the fight with that oni started." He replied. "I hope the rest of your morning is pleasant, sir." He said, giving the man a bow before giving the two next to him a glance. He snorted and went for the combat area of the compound. "Don't get him killed or you might as well perform seppuku." He stated as he walked. He had taken note of their arrogance, no military needed that kind of attitude.

Ashura

The boy was commended and after an explosion of yelling and words of appreciation, the young man darted off to his own devices. The Head General gave them the go-ahead to do as they wished and Ashura, after a deep breath, placed a hand on her hip as she watched him walk away.

"Good lord this place is mushy," she exclaimed with a mischievous grin. "I would not be surprised if half of these people still wore diapers."

With a sigh, Ashura started into the compound, heading for the bathhouses to wash off the fight. While she hadn't really exerted herself, she still detested feeling dirty and it was a sensation that just came naturally after a fight, regardless of contribution. By the sounds of it, they'd have a good deal of free time for now anyway, so she could relax.

Nöhime

Much to her surprise, Ryuichi actually accepted her proposal. Not only did he accept, but he claimed that it sounded "nice", a word that rang in Nöhime's ears like a birdsong. He asked if it was her treat, prompting her to nod enthusiastically.

"Oh, yes, master, of course!" she exclaimed with a smile and great enthusiasm as her hands clashed together as if she were about to pray. "Is there an place in particular that you'd like to go, master? I'm afraid I don't spend much time within the city to know the places their are to eat..." she explained, somewhat discouraged. "But anywhere you want is fine by me!"

When all was said and done, Katsuo was left standing on his own in the courtyard, watching as everyone went this way or that. Hayate, his exuberant confidence restored, had ran off to go training in the Combat Area, along with the big man who was still talking about stuff the Yagi didn't care about. General Himura had wandered off to do whatever it was he did that kept this place running, and Ashura had swiftly left as well.

"I suppose that's that." he muttered as he turned and headed into the Compound as well. Looking down at himself, he realized he had gotten some of the Oni's blood on himself when he'd been tearing it's back open. He supposed he should probably get cleaned up. So with that in mind, he turned off his original path to head in the direction of the Bathhouses. At this time of day, it would likely be more or less deserted.

The baths of the Kairyoshi were located behind the barracks in an area enclosed by bamboo. Here, a waterway made from logs that had been split in half and carved out ran from within the building to a pool lined by large stones. The water, drawn from a well, was heated in a large barrel over a fire inside, and then poured down the aqueduct into the bath. Fresh clouds of steam went up into the chill morning air as the waterway babbled like a forest brook.

Hayate, a folded towel balanced upon his head, leaned against one of the rocks as he soaked. His dirty clothes lay neatly folded on the porch outside the door that led from the bath to the barracks. He sighed, looking up at the sky.

Have the strength to attack from the front.

Everyone here was so strong. He had to catch up--he couldn't afford to be a burden, like he was today. What would his father say? He sighed again, and sank deeper into the water.

"Hmm. I know a few places." Ryuichi said, as they walked into the city. He knew the roads much better than Nohime did, and after some time they came to a small outdoor stall. It certainly wasn't a restaurant, but it smelled deeply of food. There were two men working the stall, cooking various things on a grill where the potential customers walking by could see it.

"They've got good yakitori here." Ryuichi said. The grills were lined with kebab-like foods, featuring all kinds of vegetables along with dumplings and meat, mostly chicken. He looked at Nohime, tilting his head somewhat like a puppy. He seemed to be a man of few words.

Ashura

Ashura took her time walking to the bathhouse. It was still the early afternoon and she was in absolutely no rush. Not only was her day clear in the way of tasks that needed to be accomplished but she was feeling particularly relaxed today.

She made her way into the housing and fetched a towel, removing her attire and placing it in a cubby but making sure to keep her necklace on that held one of the gemstones she used to maintain her disguise. Wrapping the towel around her torso, she stepped out into the bathing area and took a deep breath.

A thick mist permeated throughout the area, prompting her to take her time when approaching the water. She could see that the new fellow, Hayate was already there.

"I see you are not a fan of filth either..." she spoke as she stepped into the hot water.

Once she was beneath the veil of liquid, she removed the towel she had entered wearing and dropped in onto the cobblestone behind herself, almost suggestively as she looked toward Hayate.

"Tell me, boy... what prompted you to join us? Was there a... traumatizing event in your life that made you feel the need to hunt Youkai?" she questioned, laying her arms over the stone behind her.

Tokyo - Inner City
Nöhime

Nöhime was quite relived that Ryuichi knew of some places and was willing to lead the way. When she thought about it, proposing such a thing seemed silly when she lacked the knowledge to follow through with it. The idea made her blush as her lips contorted.

Regardless, he eventually lead them to a stall that seemed ready to serve an assortment of different foods... all of them looked appealing to the point that it was difficult for her to decide on where she wanted to start. She peered toward everything, almost seeming to sample it with her eyes before she eventually settled and pointed out a few different things, all of which were promptly served to her. Ryuichi would be able to order whatever he wanted as well, obviously and when all was said and done, the pair took a seat.

"Um..." she stuttered, taking a break from her food to try and spark up some conversation. "Master Takenaka... do you, uh, get out around the city much? Y-you seem like someone who's always busy," she began, finding it difficult to maintain eye contact. She couldn't help but dwell on the feeling that she wasn't worthy of being in his presence. He was considerably more important than she was it it made her uneasy to be here.

Hayate flinched when he heard a voice, and looked for the source only to find Ashura...in nothing but a towel. His eyes practically bugged out of his head as they took in her full figure.

Boi-yoing.

He averted his gaze, face growing red as a beet, as she immersed herself in the water and removed the towel entirely. When she spoke, her voice sultry as ever, he had to force himself not to look.

"N-not really..." he answered, his voice trembling. "There are not many p-places for s-samurai to go. The military is good, but in these peaceful times I feel I would be sitting, doing nothing." As he went on, the trembling disappeared, as he took on a look of contemplation and wasn't so distracted by Ashura. "The police force is a little better, and I considered it...but then my former lord heard of the Kairyoshi, and I decided that my skills would be best put to use here." When he finished speaking, he looked towards Ashura, out of habit of looking at someone when speaking to them--only to immediately blush bright red again and sink deeper into the water, until only his hair was visible, floating on the surface like a lilly pad.

Ryuichi ordered several things as well, and soon the two were seated on some stools near the stall. Ryuichi bit several pieces of the kebab off at once, chewing thoughtfully as she asked him questions. He swallowed, and shrugged.

"I'm not too busy. I mostly do what I want." he answered. He continued to eat, taking a look at her sword as he did so. The next time he swallowed, he pointed at it.

"Where'd you get that sword?"
