Tokyo - Kairyoshi Headquarters - Garden
Ashura

The stuttering ninja explained that they would be going to engage a Gasha-dokuro in battle. Ashura knew what it was, but had had little experience in fighting them. The behemoth's are often much too large to fight conventionally and were often just left alone or attacked with a large force. They were told to gather what they needed before meeting at the front gate.

"Ah, off to battle so quickly; how nice," Ashura exclaimed as she crossed her arms and watched the ninja disappear into the bushes once more. "That boy needs to find himself a girlfriend," she added before turning to face the gates.

Katsuo spoke up about the new recruit being barely able to handle an Oni let alone something of this magnitude. Regardless of what happened, there would always be more people to fill the ranks. One green kid dying wasn't going to make a difference.

Without speaking, Ashura headed toward the gates to wait.

Nöhime

After Nöhime explained who the gung-ho young man was, Ryuichi thanked her for the food they had shared earlier before grabbing a training weapon and starting for another room. The woman choked on her words and didn't have time to return the manners as she watched him leave dumbfounded.

It seemed that he and Hayate were going to spar after the young recruit enthusiastically asked for the chance to do so.

"Heh. Yeah. Then he could stutter sweet nothings into her ear." Katsuo remarked as Ashura joked about Yuki needing a girlfriend. After that, he watched her get up and head towards the gates without another word, hanging back for a few more minutes. Partially because he always enjoyed the view, and partially because he was still thinking about their conversation. What exactly was she planning?

After a minute or two, he simply shrugged. The best way to find out was to wait for Ashura to spring into action, and somehow he had a feeling it would be worth the wait.

So with that decided, he got up and began walking to the gates as well. Once there, he would lean against a nearby wall, folding his arms over his chest to wait.

Hayate took up a traditional sword fighting stance, his right foot slightly in front of the other. Both hands gripped the shinai, one near the tsuba and the other at the pommel. The sword was held slightly down and diagonal, its tip pointing towards his opponent. Ryuichi opted for his usual stance--none at all. He simply stood there, his hand in a loose grip on the shinai against his shoulder.

"We can start whenever." he said. Hayate tilted his head.

"Are you sure you're ready, sir?" Ryuichi merely nodded. Hayate tightened his grip on the shinai and looked serious. "Very well! I shall attack first!"

With a gliding motion, Hayate moved in and struck down, in the same manner as he'd been performing those repetitious swings before. The point of them was clear now--the blow came down with near perfect form, at a speed that forced the bamboo blade to bend and flex.

Ryuichi leaned to one side, letting the boy go right past him, his shinai meeting only air. Hayate turned quickly, bringing his sword up once more. His opponent also turned to face him, but other than that, Ryuichi hadn't moved. Hayate flexed his fingers on the hilt of his sword.

He came in with another downward strike, the same as before, but stopped it midstroke and shifted the sword's tip before bringing down a diagonal stroke instead. Ryuichi didn't even react to the feint, but gave a tiny hop backwards to get out of range of the second attack. Hayate pursued him, his blade coming around this time as a backhanded horizontal arc. Ryuichi stepped forward this time, along the backside of Hayate's arm, stepping inside the sword's trajectory. He locked eyes with the young warrior, the strange golden yellow meeting Hayate's autumnal brown.

Hayate moved backwards as fast as he could, sweat beading on his forehead. The corner of Ryuichi's mouth twitched upward slightly, just for a moment.

"He has good form and power." Shintaro commented offhandedly, standing next to Kaze, Nohime, and his fellow captain Yuki.

"His s-senses aren't b-bad." the ninja said. "The g-general flashed his killing intent wh-when they locked eyes."

Shintaro looked towards Nohime and Kaze. "Have either of you two been on a mission with him? What are your thoughts?"

Meanwhile, Ryuichi simply stood there as Hayate moved around in a semi circle, slowly closing the gap between them. With a sudden lunge, his front foot sliding forward, Hayate continued to attack. Ryuichi dodged them with the least amount of movement possible, sometimes merely leaning his head to one side as the shinai flashed inches past.

Kaze gave Nohime a small bow. "Pleasure to meet you." He replied with a small smile. He decided to follow after the group, letting his muscles relax as the rookie challenged a captain to a spar. An eyebrow drifted up slightly before settling back down into its normal position. Never hurt to fight a more experienced opponent. You learned more from losing to a stronger foe than winning against a weaker one.

He watched the captain move just enough to avoid the strikes from the younger member. Tachibana spoke up from the sidelines, making the big man shrug. "Form and power don't mean anything if you can't hit your opponent, as seen in our little spar." He stated while keeping his eye on the fight. Ryuchi called out to Nohime and himself, asking if they had been on a mission with him.

"Not officially, but he originally froze up when he was shoved into a fight against an oni. His original reaction was typical but he wizened up a bit. He didn't get to see much action though since Ashura and Kentsuo finished the oni off with some minor assistance from myself." He stated while stroking his chin, recalling the fight. "He gave it a good cut though, although he was a bit vocal while doing it. Never understood that stuff to be honest." He finished, he was a relatively silent fighter. None of that shouting nonsense or giving a basic attack some weird ass name.

Nöhime

The scuffle went on for some time and Nöhime soon came to the conclusion that she had had enough of that for the time being. Time spent doing nothing was time wasted and while observing a sparring session between a superior and a student was almost always a learning experience, it was nothing more than swordplay, something the the woman had little use for. With a polite bow for each of the other observers and a smile, the brown-haired woman left the dojo.

Outside, she took a deep breath and adjusted her hair before starting toward the Barracks. On her way, she removed the book she'd been reading near the spring before and flipped through it quickly, taking note of where she'd left off. The book mentioned the seasonal changes and their effects on the weather; colder seasons and climates made for cooler air. Cooler air was more difficult to control while harsher when used as a method of magical attack while warmer air was easier to shift and bend but had less of an effect when used in the same manner. She'd been reading this particular book for the past couple of days and was almost all of the way through. While she was certain anxious to finish and start something else, when the job beckoned, the young woman had little choice but to take up her sword.

Arriving at the Barracks, she quickly returned to her room. Collecting a few odds and ends and placing them in a satchel, she left the building and started for the Gardens near the entrance of the compound.

The two captains nodded as Kaze presented his account of the boy, but had different reactions by the end.

"Ya gotta be vocal when you attack!" Shintaro said, pumping his fist. "It's how you put your soul into it!" He punched the air, giving a short kiai of his own. Yuki winced at the sound.

"It also lets y-your o-opponent know you're c-coming." the ninja pointed out. "N-not a good idea if you're s-slow."

"Not if ya do it right as you execute!" Shintaro opposed. The two began to discourse on the nature of the kiai and how necessary it was. Out on the floor, Hayate and Ryuichi's spar continued.

None of the younger swordsman's attacks were connecting, and Ryuichi's eyes were starting to return to their half lidded stated.

"This all?" he said, raising a crimson eyebrow. Hayate grit his teeth.

"Then I shall try something new, sir!" he said. As Ryuichi backed up from his latest strike, the boy didn't press the advantage. Instead he held to his stance, standing still as a statue.

Shintaro was the first to notice, immediately breaking his discussion with Yuki.

"That's my--"

In one moment Hayate was standing in front of Ryuichi. Then he was right in front of the man, his blade coming down hard.

"Foot technique." Yuki finished, more than a little surprised.

Ryuichi's own eyes went wide. He tightened the grip on his shinai. There was a loud clack as the two bamboo blades came together. The red haired general looked at Hayate with a tilted head once more, a slight hint of a smile barely present on his face.

"Hmm. Better." He saw that Hayate was trembling with effort, and looked to their swords. The boy had two hands on his shinai and his blow had come down with all his weight behind it. Yet Ryuichi held his own weapon in just one hand, and held him off as if he were no more than a kitten. His yellow eyes seemed to flash.

Hayate suddenly jumped back, just as he had before.

"Nah." Ryuichi said over his shoulder. Sweat broke out on the boy's face as he whipped around to face his attacker--that movement was even faster than the footwork he'd copied from the captain!

Ryuichi's blade came out.

It was a lazy, carefree blow, a simple backhand horizontal. Yet it moved at blinding speed, the air steaming and whistling through the slats of bamboo. Hayate backed against the wall, sword held vertically before him in an attempt to block.

"Whoa, Aniki!"

"General!"

Crack-kow!

Hayate slumped to the ground, sitting, staring up at the man before him. His shinai had been broken at the hilt--no. It had been cleanly sliced. Beyond it, his kimono and the shirt beneath it had also been sliced open, though his skin bore no mark. But behind him, the wooden wall of the room now bore a scar--as if a single, giant claw had scraped across it.

"Sorry. Got a little excited." Ryuichi said. He turned away, padding over to the weapon rack, one hand scratching at his ear. "Thanks, though." He, too, held only a hilt, and the floor was littered with splinters of what had been his blade, torn to shreds by the pressure he had put upon it.

"You okay, Aki-kun!?" Shintaro said, running over to the boy and kneeling next to him. He snapped his fingers in front of Hayate's face, finally drawing a reaction.

"H-he's...strong." The boy said, dropping the hilt from his hands. Shintaro helped him up.

"You have a m-mission." Yuki said, stepping forward. "You'll be g-going w-with Ashura, Katsuo, Gufuu, and Nohime, as well as some you haven't met before." He nodded towards Kaze and spoke to both of them. "You should g-get ready. Ashura and Katsuo are already at the g-gate."

"Looks like some of the others are finally coming. Sheesh. I was starting to think we'd been stood up." Katsuo said lightly as he spotted a woman coming their way from the Gardens. He didn't know who the girl garbed in green was, but like Ashura, he was reasonably certain he had seen her before somewhere in the ranks of the Kairyoshi. She had a rather serene look about her, aside from the sword she was carrying with her, and he raised a hand in greeting.

"Hello there. I assume you're another one of the ones who drew the short straw for this mission?" he asked as she came closer.

Ashura

Nöhime

It was quite some time before another sign of life appeared anywhere near the gates. From her perch atop a stone wall surrounding the garden, Ashura watched Nohime approach. Katsuo noticed her as well, mentioning that it had felt as though they'd been left alone.

"Heh..." Ashura scoffed. "If anything was done promptly around here, there would be no reason for this place to exist as everything would already be done," the pale woman exclaimed, stifling her pompous laughter with the back of her hand.

When the long-haired woman in green was close enough, Katsuo greeted her and asked if she was joining them on the mission as well.

"Short straw?" Nöhime questioned timidly. "What do you mean?" she inquired, quite clearly not in the know as far as slang was concerned.

"Good lord..." Ashura cut in. "You do not get out much, do you?" she asked Nöhime, looking down at her.

"I'm outside everyday," she replied simply, not entirely sure as to what was going on.

After a few moments, Hayate recovered and stood on his own, checking himself for injuries. It seemed only his clothes had suffered any damage; otherwise, he didn't even have a bruise.

"Good luck, that." said Shintaro as he patted the young man on the back. "Aniki was just...greeting you as a fellow warrior. I think." Hayate retrieved his real sword and restored it to its place at his side.

"Who...who was that man, sir?"

"Hunting General Takenaka Ryuichi." It was Yuki who answered, once again standing on the ceiling. Hayate's neck popped as he craned it to look up at the other captain, mouth wide open in awe.

A short time later, Kaze and Hayate arrived at the gate with the others--just as another group came from another part of the grounds. There were three of them, two who looked like ordinary warriors, both carrying spears, and one with a significantly more dignified bearing.

"Att-en-tion!" the man suddenly roared. The two men with him, as well as Hayate, all snapped to a rigid salute. The man glared at the rest of them, as if daring them not to do the same.

"My name is Yoshida Takashi, of the Eight Captains, under the command of General Himura!" He slammed the butt of a long, cloth wrapped object against the earth. "For the remainder of this mission, you'll all be taking orders from me, got it?" He swung the object again, this time pointing towards the gates. "We'll be meeting our mounts at one of the city stables nearby, and if we don't lollygag around we ought to be at the target area by nightfall! Now move out!"

And so it was that, less than an hour later, they were riding out into the wilderness...

"True enough." Katsuo said, looking up at Ashura sitting on the wall while the newcomer continued to approach. Her reply drew somewhat of a blank stare from the Yagi though, but once Ashura cut in and the girl garbed in green responded again he laughed. "You're funny. What's your name, Doll?" he asked.

After that, the rest of their group appeared, and Katsuo pushed off the wall to stand in line with everyone else as they were called to attention by Yoshida Takashi, one of the Eight Captains. He layed down the law for the group, and quickly got things moving. Soon enough, they were riding to their destination on horseback.

"Hey, Kid! No offense, but if you freeze up this time, you're definitely going to die out there. A Gasha-dokuro is in a whole different league compared to that Oni we fought earlier today." he said to Hayate.

"With that in mind, how exactly are we going about fighting this Youkai?" he asked the group at large.

Ashura

Nöhime

Both Ashura and Nöhime seemed at home atop a steed. Ashura had an air about her that seemed to instill fear in in animals while Nöhime had a particular kindness that animals were able to sense. Both methods served the current purpose, but at the end of the day, one would often prefer the approach of the woman in green: less chance for negative fallout.

Throughout the trek, Ashura remained relatively silent. She wasn't fond on the idea of such a large hunting party as she was always a woman of solitude, at least when it came to combat. Her fighting style left a large diameter of harm for any enemy or ally within it and saying that friendlies were never harmed when fighting alongside her would be lying.

While Nöhime wasn't speaking currently, but rather waiting for her time to chime in. Katsuo spoke to the enthusiastic young man about being more careful during this bout before raising the question about how they could engage the massive creature.

"My main area of expertise it more long-range," Nöhime spoke up. "I can support the group if that is to your liking," she continued, speaking generally. "But as far as striking a foe with a sword or other weapon; consider me moot," the woman finished with a quiet, nervous laugh.

"At least you shan't end up disembowelled by my blade," Ashura replied to Nöhime, her pompous expression visible to anyone who looked her way. "Standing at the back and supporting us is likely all you would be good for anyway," she added, her tone quite venomous.

Nöhime simply frowned and looked away.

"Not to worry, Katsuo-dono! I have confidence that I will not shirk my duty a second time!" Hayate said, crossing his arms as he sat, spine straight and chest puffed out. The confident pose was a little diminished, however, by the fact that he was sitting horizontally, barely holding onto the horse by wrapping his legs around the creature's torso. The animal paid little heed to its unskilled rider, completely ignoring Hayate's attempts to guide it by the reins. It wandered somewhat off to the side of the main group, browsing the grass on the side of the road as it went.

Katsuo asked how the group planned to handle the Youkai, and again Hayate smirked.

"My family's style has a technique that makes cutting through bone easier--even if this gashadokuro is a hundred times bigger than me, I will not--fwah!" The horse walked through a clump of bushes, dragging the boy's face through the leaves. When it came out on the other side, Hayate spat out a mouthful of shrubbery, a stray twig sticking out of his hair.

Nohime and Ashura offered their input as well, but Ashura seemed especially ill tempered towards the much more mild girl. Hayate gave a tug on the pommel of his saddle, and finally righted himself atop the horse, looking over at the two women.

"Ashura-dono," he began sternly, "You shouldn't speak so harshly to Nohime-dono! We are all allies here--doh!" This time, a low hanging tree branch clocked the boy, knocking him out of the saddle. His foot caught in the stirrup, and the horse continued on unimpeded, even as the boy's head dragged the ground like a plow, leaving furrows in the earth.

Nohime was the first to chime in with an answer to Katsuo's question, and he looked over at her from his saddle. She explained that fighting up close and personal wasn't her style, and she preferred playing support. It seemed that her blade must have been mainly for show, or perhaps more of a magical weapon. "Alright. Support it is then. What exactly are we talking about? What can you do?" he asked, tilting his head. He'd always been more suited to fighting alone, but if the had to work in a group, he might as well know what he could expect from his comrades.

Ashura gave a rather haughty reply, and he chuckled inwardly. She truly put herself on quite the pedestal. It was rather attractive. But maybe a little misplaced at the moment. Hayate admonished her as he comically fumbled with his horse, and after a moment of watching the torturous act, he rode over to him and hoisted him into his saddle. "Clearly part of your training should have included horse riding."

"I don't suppose anyone has actually fought a Gasha-dokuro before, have they?"

Ashura

Nöhime

After Ashura had given Nöhime a relatively nasty reply, Hayate, after he had finished fumbling with his horse, retorted, explaining that since they were all on the same team that she should be kinder to the long-haired woman.

"Hardly..." Ashura replied, ready to continue before the young man fell from his horse again.

Nöhime sat with a frown before Katsuo chimed in and asked her what she was capable of. Her usual smile returned as she seemed happy to explain her abilities.

"I can summon forest spirits," she began, looking to him as she spoke. "I can also use earth and storm-based magics in various ways," the woman continued, seemingly passionate about her skills in combat. "When we fight inside though; things get somewhat less effective," Nöhime concluded, her smile fading a bit.

Katsuo went on to ask if anyone had ever fought a Gasha-dokuro before as he, judging from his tone, had not.

"Many years ago," Ashura responded, her gaze locked ahead. "The creatures tend to be somewhat resilient to blades and piercing weapons," she explained. "Bones often crumble beneath a bludgeon however..."

"You lot back there seem awful chatty." came a loud, boisterous voice from the front. Captain Yoshida and his own mount dropped back among them. "Gashadokuro are big, but they're just piles of old bones. Anything that'll crush a man's skull will crush theirs too, with a few extra hits." He shifted the long, cloth wrapped weapon on his shoulder. "Course, cutting weapons can work too, long as you're careful." The captain glared at Ashura and Nohime suddenly, wrinkling his nose for a moment.

"If I'm not mistaken, you're that psychotic woman with the chain weapon." he said to Ashura. "Dunno why you're acting all high and mighty--as little as you are the Gashadokuro will snap it like string." Then, to Nohime, "I'd be careful throwing around the term "magic" if I were you, woman." He said the last word as if he disapproved. "That's the domain of exorcists and youkai. Priests don't like folk passing themselves off as one, and we kill the others."

Then he turned to look at Katsuo and Hayate, as the former helped the latter back onto his horse.

"And you, boy." he spat, "I'd better not see as shoddy a performance here as I heard you had last time. Having women on the battlefield is bad enough, we don't need suckling babes too." He snapped the reins of his horse, and trotted back towards the front. "Now cut the chatter and ride!"

Ashura

Nöhime

While distracted with their chatter, the man in charge, one Yoshida Takashi slowed his paced to allow them to catch up before interjecting with his own opinion, downplaying the danger that such a large foe presented. He and Ashura both shared the same fleeting disapproval of the Youkai and he made sure to note that their bones break just the same as a human's.

He then went on to address Ashura directly, claiming her to be psychotic before scolding her arrogance and superiority complex. He also claimed that her weapon might "snap like string", to which she scoffed.

"Well is this not just the pot calling the kettle black," she retorted with an upturned nose. "Typical large-chested male: if he is not the Alpha, none may be," she added, closing her eyes gently.

He also claimed Nöhime's magic to be the work of either Youkai or exorcists, of which she was neither. He seemed to preach quite a bit, throwing supposed knowledge around like rice at a wedding, but nonetheless the dark-skinned woman respected her superior and said nothing in response.

"Good lord, woman..." Ashura began, shrugging with one hand. "...stand up for yourself; you remind me of a mat," the pale woman sighed as she finished speaking. "These men will trod over you like mud beneath their feet if you let them. The amount of 'pathetic' emanating from you is truly disgusting."

Katsuo looked back and forth between his companions as insults were thrown back and forth, observing the conversation with a thoughtful look on his face. Captain Yoshida certainly liked to throw his attitude around, a fact that only irked Ashura, causing her to lash out as well. Looking to Nohime, the Yagi almost felt sorry for the poor girl. She seemed nice enough, but nice wasn't exactly helpful with people like these.

Rubbing the back of his neck, he sighed and shook his head. "Now, now. We're not going to leave the Gashadokuro much to do if we tear ourselves to pieces before it even gets the chance." he said. He wondered if he would have to hold back more than usual. Nohime could converse with spirits, was there a chance that they could expose him? He wasn't sure.

"Let's just get this over with. I get the feeling the less time this 'team' is together, the better off we'll all be." he continued. "I wonder if the Captain even has a plan for how to fight this Youkai. How did you bring down the one you fought, Ashura?"

The sun drooped lower and lower as the group continued on, but just when it seemed darkness might fall without them ever seeing their destination, the captain held up a hand for halt. Hayate peered about, taking in the landscape.

The forest had thinned considerably, and now gave way to a plain as the road wound on into the distance. Aside from some low hills and bare, dark colored groups of brush, there wasn't much to see for quite a ways.

"Alright, everyone break into twos." Yoshida said. "From here on, nobody does anything by themselves. Gashadokuro are known to attack only one person at a time. If you hear ringing in your ears, that's a sign it's nearby."

"But, sir," Hayate said, racking his memory. "Have we reached the village?"

"You're looking at it, boy."

Hayate blinked, and looked closer. The hills...they were too round, and the grass hadn't yet grown over their surfaces. Those dark colored clumps of brush weren't growing out of the ground; they had fallen there, jagged timbers blackened and broken. Here and there he spotted stones and broken tiles, remains of foundations and roofs. The grassy plains, growing so tall and so wild...weren't there furrows between them, where the dirt had once been broken?

"It's..." Hayate began, looking incredulously over the land. Yoshida snorted.

"Gone. Been gone for a while now. See those grave mounds?" He pointed at the rounded hills. "Place was razed by one army or another, back during the war. That's why the Gashadokuro is here now."

"B-but...I thought..." Hayate climbed down from his horse, stepping towards one of the burned out husks.

"Where'd you think the bones of a Gashadokuro come from?" Again Yoshida snorted. "The spirits of those who fall in war...who starve and die when everything is taken from them...who fall asleep for the last time, cursing their own pitiable weakness." Yoshida too climbed off of his horse, leading it towards what looked like a broken down and nearly dried out well. "And now those pathetic wretches have become a monster."

The captain ordered the two soldiers to find someplace they could make camp, then turned to look at the remainder of the party. His eyes passed over the five of them, sneering at the women and Hayate. Finally he pointed at Kaze.

"You, you're with me. We're going to see if we can find sign of this thing. Women and boys, see about getting us some firewood and something to eat."

Village Remains

Ashura

Nöhime

As they neared their destination, Katsuo had asked Ashura how she managed to bring down the Gasha-dokuro she'd fought years ago.

"Speed and endurance," Ashura replied without wasting any words. "The beasts lack speed."

They soon arrived at the remains of a village long-lost to the concept of time. While there was little remaining to indicate that there had once been anything there, keen eyes could see the evidence. Ashura dismounted from her horse and released the reigns, crossing her arms and taking a few steps toward the remains of a foundation as the Captain told them to remain in groups of two.

Nöhime had dismounted as well, moving toward a small stream; the sound of the trickling water barely audible to her ears. At one time it could've been a large river that this village could've used as a water source but, just like the village itself, it had been ravaged by both man and nature, leaving very little behind. With a frown, she turned as the Captain began to give out orders. He wanted the largest member, Kaze, to go with him and the others to split up and find firewood and food. The order immediately prompted Nöhime to look toward Ashura, who wasn't impressed. With a slight smile of pleasure, the long-haired woman took a look around the area; hoping to take note of the best place to do what was asked of her.

Ashura scoffed and turned her head toward the setting sun, obviously holding no intention to perform the petty task assigned to her. Someone else could do it for all she cared, but it was obviously that she thought herself above such duties.

"Sounds about right." Katsuo replied as Ashura explained in few words how she had defeated a Gashadokuro in the past. There really wasn't any trick to it, you just had to be smart enough to get it done. Still, it was an impressive feat.

They continued riding from there for what felt like a few hours, until they arrived in the remains of an old village, destroyed at some point during the last human war. The Captain explained to Hayate why their target would make a place like this it's home, and then ordered everyone to remain in groups of two at all times. He hopped down from his horse along with the others, handing off the reigns as he looked around. Time had not been kind to this place. Barely any of the buildings were standing anymore, and he could see the pathetic remains of a once strong river trickling through the area. "Quaint." he remarked with a shake of his head.

The Captain gave further orders, taking Kaze with him while the rest of them basically set up camp. "I think I'm a little too old to be called 'boy' anymore..." he said wryly, noting the reactions of Ashura and Nohime to their orders. Night and day, those two were. Scrubbing a hand through his white hair, he looked at the setting sun.

"We might as well get comfortable. Gashadokuro usually don't hunt until the middle of the night. So we've got some waiting around to do." he said, walking closer to Ashura and shrugging his shoulders.

"Word of advice, Kid. If we find the Youkai, let the veterans do most of the heavy lifting this time. No offense, but you'll just get in the way if you try to swing your sword around here. You should probably stay back with Nohime."
