"But Katsuo-dono!" Hayate protested, "I can do it this time!" The boy looked down at his clenched fists, then back towards the remains of the village. Captain Yoshida had been particularly dismissive of him as well, but he couldn't very well speak out against a superior officer. "I...I won't freeze, or run away! I'll fight too!" He suddenly turned back towards the forest. "I can do this, starting with the firewood!" The boy took off at a jog, crunching over fallen leaves and twigs. |

Village Remains Ashura Nöhime Ashura had since taken a seat on a fallen tree, crossing her legs and watching out toward where the Captain and Kaze had wandered to. Her mind had since left the idea of performing menial tasks behind; leaving Katsuo, Hayate and Nöhime to do it. Katsuo brought up the impending fight again telling Hayate that if he was going to freeze up again, he should stay back and out of their way alongside Nöhime. The long-haired woman frowned as she was again shrugged aside as a non-combatant and grouped in with basically a child. As she mellowed on the idea however, the young man announced that he had no intention of freezing up before stating his plan to find firewood and darting off into the forest. Realizing that they were told to stay in groups of two and seeing that Ashura and Katsuo had no intention of following him, Nöhime gathered herself and took off after him; following the sounds of snapping branches and undergrowth to catch up. |

"I'm not saying you can't help out somehow, but-hey! Hold on a second, Kid!" Katsuo said, trying to explain, only to be interrupted as Hayate dashed off into the forest in search of firewood. Groaning, he shook his head, looking over at Nohime as she stood up to follow after him. Judging by the look on her face, she had likely misconstrued what he had meant too. Even after all this time, he still sometimes ended up putting his foot in his mouth when talking to humans. Oh well. There wasn't much to be done about it right now. Shrugging his shoulders, he chuckled to himself. "Enthusiastic to a fault. It's nice to be young." he said. At least Nohime would likely keep Hayate out of trouble. Ashura had sat down on a fallen tree nearby with a bored expression on her face, which was more than enough to inform Katsuo that she had no intention of doing anything. He sat down nearby, deciding it would probably be pointless to try and find any food in a place as dead as this. "And now the best part, the waiting..." he said sarcastically. |

Hayate stopped after a short while, once he had fully immersed himself into the forest. He looked around, searching for fallen branches and other such things that could be used to start a fire. A chill breeze picked up, and he looked up at the darkening sky. In a low murmur, he cursed himself for his weakness. "Father...I haven't done a very good job so far, have I?" As in response, the wind rustled the branches above him. "My allies cannot rely on me...I am weak, and immature. Perhaps I should go back...take up some sort of deskwork instead..." A branch tumbled out of the trees above, striking the boy squarely on the head. Hayate let out a yelp and rubbed his head. It felt almost like when his father struck him with the shinai when he did something foolish. He took one hand away from his head, and clenched it into a fist. "Yes, Father! You're right! I can't give up now! I must muster my true samurai spirit!" He exhaled through his nose, mouth set in a determined line. For a moment he struck an impressive figure, standing tall as the wind ruffled his hair. Then another branch fell on his head. "D'oh!" |

Kaze had ridden along quietly, keeping more focus on keeping himself atop the horse than anything. He was a foot-soldier, not cavalry, he broke the cavalry more often than not. Although during the ride the leader of the group talked down to the women of the group and Hayate, making the bludgeon wielders eyes narrow. Then the noblewoman had to start in on Nohime which brought a scowl to his face. These people didn't seem to make a good military force if all they did was belittle others. Hayate soon pointed out the lack of a village while the captain explained what had happened in a crude manner. "Those 'pathetic wretches' did the labor for lazy lords." Kaze growled at the captain. "Without 'peasant' nobles and 'higher ups' wouldn't have a grain to eat." He continued, giving the superior officer a hard glare. He had come from humble beginnings like most recruits in the military. His past being badmouthed didn't sit to well with him. Camp was soon to be made, and apparently some weren't fit to tag along with the captain. Pairs were required and the women with Hayate and Kairos were sent to get water and firewood. He dismounted before slinging his weapon back up onto his shoulder then picketed the horse. He followed wordlessly, having an agitated vibe to him now instead of his normal laid back one. |

Village Remains Nöhime When Nöhime was finally able to catch up to Hayate, she found him muttering something to himself before a tree branch fell and struck him on the head. She winched when he did as the strike certainly didn't appear to be comfortable. Making her way over, she approached the young man, clasping her hands in front of herself. "Are you alright?" she inquired in a concerned tone with an expression to match. "You don't often seem to have luck on your side, do you?" she asked further, noting the man's earlier folly with the horse and now this. |

"Ah, Nohime-dono..." Hayate turned, still rubbing his head. "Yes, I'm alright, thank you." He bent down and picked up the two sticks that had fallen on him, as a start to the firewood they had been sent to gather. As he looked around for more, he recalled that Katsuo had said something about staying out of the way with her. Captain Yoshida had been rather dismissive of her as well; Ashura, too. "What about you? Are you alright?" he asked her. "The others said a lot of unkind things..." "Well, that's definitely a sign." said Captain Yoshida, kicking the corpse with his foot. It lay in the tall grass of the plains not too far from the road, just outside the end of the village. The man was dressed as a wandering monk, and had probably stopped to say a prayer for the villager's spirits or something. His head had been bitten off by something with teeth the size of tombstones. The captain turned back towards Kaze. "It'll probably show up again tonight, now that there's fresh meat wandering around." A call from one of the other soldiers signified that they had set up camp. The captain headed towards it, nodding for Kaze to follow. A single wall stood, cracked and blackened, at about waist-height. The rest of the house had fallen or burned away, leaving only blackened rubble around the back of the wall and the sides, but it would be enough shelter to break the cold winds. "I don't see a fire or food. Where'd that other bunch get to?" Yoshida frowned and turned back to Kaze. "You have any clue?" |

Village Remains Nöhime Nöhime was assured that Hayate was alright when he stated as such and went back to collecting firewood for an inevitable camp fire. He retorted by asking her if she was alright, noting that the others tended to be rather dismissive of her or downright mean in the case of the Captain and Ashura. "Y-yes, I'm fine," she replied, staring toward the ground rather meekly. "My skills in battle aren't quite as... useful as those who can wield a sword well," she continued, clasping her hands in front of her chest. "But I do what I can," she concluded, her expression lightening up with a faint smile. Her eyes went to the wood he'd collected from around himself before they wandered up to the sky above. "Do you think you've got enough wood?" she inquired, tilting her head almost quizzically. She'd never built a camp fire before so she was unsure of the preparation required as well as the process. |

Katsuo tilted his head, hearing the sounds of one of the other soldiers that the Captain had brought with them shouting that they had finished making camp. He looked that way, spotted them all setting up in what had once been the ruins of a house. All that remained of it now was a single, blackened wall, likely being used as shielding from the elements. The Captain and Kaze were heading that way, and the Yagi sighed in exasperation. "This is never going to work. Gashadokuro may not have that much going on upstairs, but they're not stupid enough to come anywhere near a group this big." he said to Ashura, frowning to himself as he looked at the group. "It would be smarter and easier to lure it out with a much smaller group. This is a two person job. One person laying in wait to ambush someone, or something, is easier to hide than several. That would be the smarter way to go, wouldn't you say?" he asked. |

Village Remains Ashura Kaihime Once the Captain and Kaze appeared again, Katsuo began to complain that they'd never be able to lure the Youkai out with this many people all clumped together. While Ashura was equally and antsy to get things going as he was, she assumed that the Captain knew that the Gasha-dokuro wouldn't show itself while they were together. However, whatever he planned it certainly wasn't apparent but for the time being, Ashura was content with the break. Katsuo went on to elaborate on a plan that, for the most part, was sound. "There will be a time and a place," she began, still staring in the direction opposite Katsuo. "Take the opportunity to relax..." She trailed off, seemingly distracted with something at the moment. Captain Yoshida and Kaze as well as the soldiers they had with them would find themselves met with the appearance of a young woman holding a bow. She approached slowly but didn't look ready for a fight. It would seem that she actually knew who these people were. "I'm gonna assume you're all here for the Gasha-dokuro?" she questioned with a slightly raised eyebrow. "Looks like you've got enough muscle," she exclaimed with a small smile, gesturing toward all of the people gathered round. "My name's Kai, by the way," she added almost nervously as if she'd forgotten something. |

Ashura gave a distant reply to Katsuo's words, and while she seemed to agree with his idea on how to handle their mission, she also advised taking the opportunity presented to them to enjoy some downtime. But as she trailed off, Katsuo raised his eyebrow. It wasn't as if he knew Ashura well enough to be able to read her or anything, but she seemed as if something was occupying her thoughts besides their current situation. "Maybe you're right. I suppose we'll see what happens." he said, getting up from his sitting position. He walked over to sit down near Ashura on the fallen tree, big as it was there was plenty of room, and looked at her curiously. "Something on your mind, Ashura? You look as if you're half a world away right now." |

Kaze gave the captain a hard glare when he kicked the headless corpse of what was once a monk. "Have some respect for the dead." He growled, obviously not pleased with this captains mannerisms. Insulting the 'lower class' and now kicking corpses. Whoever got him his position was a fool, power didn't garner respect and this captain was as low as dirt in the veterans eyes. They made their way back to camp as a call rang out for Yoshida. The captain commented on the lack of a fire and food before asking Kaze where the other two went. "I was with you, so I obviously don't know where they are or what's taking them so long." He responded, giving Yoshida a deadpan look. "As for the lack of food and fire, you got a noble lady, a guy who doesn't seem to not want to do anything, apparently two lazy soldiers, a young man getting wood most likely, and a young woman to accompany him so his head doesn't get bitten off." He listed, tallying the soldiers on his fingers. While he was tallying a young woman showed up, an archer. Or so he thought judging by the bow on her person. She questioned if they were there for the Gashs-dokuro before introducing herself with her first name only. "Yes we're here for that creature, and it's a pleasure to meet you Miss Kai." He replied, as pleasantly as his gruff voice would allow. "I'm sure the others can introduce themselves, but I'm Kaze." He continued. |

"Captain Yoshida Takashi." said the man, standing up as Kaze and Kai got friendly. What he was captain of, he didn't say--the Kairyoshi were supposed to be a secret unit outside of the government. "I'm the leader of this unit. What're you doing way out here?" he asked suspiciously, one hand flexing around the long, cloth wrapped object he carried. Hayate picked up another stick, adding it to the sizable pile under his arm. When Nohime asked if he had enough, he turned and looked at the sky with her. The sun had fully set now, and the stars were just beginning to blink into sight. "I think it will be enough for now, yes." he said with a nod. He looked back at Nohime. "I...would not say that I am good with a sword, either. Not after what has happened today." he said with a sad expression. "But I've sworn to myself that I will become stronger...though it seems it is going to take a while." He smiled again, and reached up to grasp one of Nohime's hands with his own, giving it a reassuring squeeze. "Let's both try our best!" With that, the boy turned and headed off back towards the camp at a jog. As Ashura and Katsuo took their sweet time doing nothing, the woods around them sounded with the first hoots and calls of night life. The others of the group seemed far enough away that the animals didn't mind them. Wild things feared humans, but perhaps it wasn't always so with Youkai, as they too were beings of nature in a sense. And so the owls called and the bats squeaked, and somewhere far off, a wolf howled. As the night grew deeper, the air grew colder. Soon, a damp mist began to drift along the ground... |

Village Remains - Campsite Ashura Kaihime Nöhime Ashura should've known that acting outside her norm would draw attention to herself. Katsuo agreed with what she said before making his way over and taking a seat on the same log she was on. He then proceeded to asked her if something was wrong, a question she felt no desire to answer. "Do you not have wood or food you should be fetching?" she inquired, looking to him as she spoke before her eyes returned to the horizon. "You know that embittered old krone running the show will give you a tongue lashing..." As they waited, an ominous fog began to roll in over the area; a sign that night was coming and a Gasha-dokuro haunted the area. It likely wouldn't be long now and Ashura remained on guard. After Kai's spiel of words, she was given a response from both men she'd spoken to. The first explained that they were indeed here hunting Youkai and introduced himself as Kaze seemingly trying to add a welcoming smile; but the gestured seemed forced. He went on to say that there were others and that they could introduce themselves later. The second man seemed more hesitant to welcome her and introduced himself as a Captain. The man kept his hand on what was most certainly a weapon before asking her what she was doing here. "Hunting Youkai, just like you," she responded quickly. "I hear it's a big one this time," the girl went on with an excited smile. "I've run into other guys from your organization before... out and about fighting Youkai all over the place," she said calmly, explaining how it was that she knew of the Kairyoshi. After collecting a few more pieces, Hayate finally admitted that he felt he'd found enough wood for the night. He then went on to admit that he didn't feel as though he was skilled with a blade either, likely an attempt to comfort her. He explained his ambition to become stronger before taking one of her hands in a reassuring manner; telling her that they should both do their best before turning and setting off back toward camp. Nöhime stood watching him go for a moment before her eyes wandered down to her sword. "Y-yes..." she muttered before setting off after him. |

Katsuo wasn't particularly surprised that Ashura didn't want to open to him about what was bothering her. It was easy to see that she was a woman who liked to keep her cards close to her chest, and what a chest it was. She turned to him, stating that he had better things to do, like following their orders to find food and firewood, before returning her eyes to the horizon. "Couldn't I say the same of you? He's just as likely to yell at you as he is me, even more so, since he seems to have a thing against women." he replied with a slight chuckle. "I'm sure the Kid can handle the menial stuff. He's got so much energy, it'll be good to give him something easy to do to burn some of it off. Knowing him, he'd probably think it a chance to prove himself useful, and jump to it with gusto." Night had more or less fallen by now, and an dubious fog had set upon the area around them. That was often seen as a sign that Gashadokuro were on the prowl, and Katsuo took a deep breath, feeling at home in such surroundings, given his past. "I suppose if you don't want to tell me what's on your mind, you don't have to. But we've got a little time before our target appears. Now would be a good time to unburden yourself, so you're not distracted during battle." he said as he leaned back on his hands. |

Just then, Hayate came bursting out of the undergrowth, a bundle of wood in his arms. He hummed a happy tune, proud of himself for accomplishing his task. "Katsuo-dono, Ashura-dono, I have returned!" he said triumphantly, turning so that he could see them over the towering pile blocking off his vision. "How was your success in the hunt?" Both of them seemed to be sitting in the same position they had been when he left. Ashura seemed to be in a world of her own thoughts, and he wondered what had happened to make her so. He didn't think she was usually the introspective type. Then he looked over to Katsuo. The man seemed much the same as before. Hayate had to quickly stop himself from frowning; he hoped the man wasn't so laid back that he had completely ignored the tasks they had been set. "I see." Yoshida said, still eyeing the woman with contempt. She'd encountered other units of the Kairyoshi? She obviously fancied herself some sort of demon hunter, but who knew what else she did in her spare time. For all they knew, she might have told everyone she met on the road about them. Not only that, but she was going to be nothing but a liability to the group. Noting her bow, he looked towards the woods. He could at least put her to some use...and perhaps get rid of her and lure the Gashadokuro at the same time. "Well then, I don't suppose you'd mind helping us out, would you? Right now, we ain't got a thing to eat. If you can shoot us up some rabbits or something, we'll let you hang around." He didn't bother telling her what he had told all the others earlier--that no one was to go out alone. Edited by Onime No Ryu, Feb 5 2014, 09:55 PM.

Village Remains - Campsite Ashura Kaihime Nöhime As hard as Ashura attempted to rid herself of this man's babbling, Katsuo continued to pester her. Her retorted to her question with the same thing before going on to explain that the young man could likely take care of the wood himself. After a pause, he again questioned what was bothering her and after a ruby-eyed momentary glare, Ashura stood up from her seat and moved away from him, heading to another area of the clearing. It was evident that she wanted to be left alone but that wouldn't be happening any time soon. The Hayate and the woman in green had returned to the camp site, more than enough wood for a long-lasting fire in the arms of the energetic adolescent. He asked them both questions as he often did prompting Ashura to ignore him as she had Katsuo. Nöhime remained silent, letting Hayate do the talking. He asked them how their hunt went and it was more than clear that they hadn't actually gone anywhere or done anything. With a slight frown, Nöhime moved to take some of the wood from Hayate's grasp to unburden him a bit and set it down on the ground in a bare area where a fire could easily be built. This man wasn't very trusting... not even a little bit as a matter of fact. Not only did he have a stare that could crack stone but he went ahead and asked Kai if she could venture into the forest to find food. Since she'd been involved with fighting Youkai for many years and while she'd never fought a Gasha-dokuro before, she knew that they were lured to singular bodies. He was sending her into the woods to die. "I'm not that stupid," Kai exclaimed, placing her hands on her hips and tilting her head a bit. "You don't trust me; I get that. But, now that the sun's gone and the fog's settled in, you're stuck with me," she began, a stern expression on her face that wasn't quite cut out for anything beyond a smile. "So, you can either give me something to do where I won't get attacked, or I'm gonna go sit down somewhere," she concluded, crossing her arms firmly. |
