Brilliant MST. Love your little conversation about 'will she fall in love with me' ect. Absolutly true for a Sue.

Some of the sentances of the story nearly made my eyes bleed, particulary the bad spelling in slighly baggy pants which her bluse were tucked in . Oh and the fact that she used the wrong sea, those see rats, and what exactly does his whole lord ship mean? We'll probably never know.
Merlin: Thank you.
Arthur: For what? For lying to my father to save your worthless hide? If you ever put me in that situation again, Merlin, I will clap you irons myself.

John: Sorry.

Thank you. And yes, I did hit on all the main cliches of the Sue in that conversation.

And yes, someone didn't particularly care for spelling. Or for grammar at that point. Do teachers no longer teach about commas or when to put in a full stop? And we'll never know. The story was flamed to high heaven, she put up a whining author note saying she didn't care what we thought and that she was still going to write the story, and then it came down. I think it got taken down because we all reported her for having a chapter that was just an author's note. Her profile doesn't exist anymore either.

Well that was good I'd say. It does annoy me to read stories where people haven't used grammar, punctuation ect correctly. And that 'story' made no sense.

You definatly did hit all the main cliche bar the 'Will she be 20 times better than any of us at fighting?' one.

Arthur: For what? For lying to my father to save your worthless hide? If you ever put me in that situation again, Merlin, I will clap you irons myself.

I seem to remember flaming this one. At least I remember flaming something with a pirate elf where they sang songs from "Pirates of the Caribbean," and that it was taken down soon after. Was this one taken down from ff.net?

Yes, so far all my stories have come from Fanfiction.net. I don't usually go lurking around in other fanfiction places unless I'm really obsessed. So you probably did flame this one.

Also--"Two Hearts, One Soul" is now up.

Astaldo? Kano? Aren't those Tulkas' Quenya name and Maglor's (Kanafinwe) nickname, respectively? Let's just say she randomly picked some "elvish" names, without bothering to check whom they belonged to. (Though she gets points for not making up her own Sindarin translations or using Barrow-Downs generator.)
Still, if Bilbo's singing about Earendil before Elrond was frowned upon (sort of), then introducing oneself as Maglor...Not that one can expect Suethors to bother to research, just thinking what it would be like if it happened in canon world.
Or perhaps Tulkas got bored because noone wants to wrestle with him anymore in Valinor, and Maglor got bored of his self-imposed exile, so they decided to go for identity change and roam the seas...Remove captain Laurina, and it actually has potential...

Possibly. I feel a bit remiss in admitting I've still yet to read The Silm.

Nothing to feel remiss about - in The Silm, the name Astaldo came up only once, and Maglor's Quenya name was not even mentioned. It comes from HoME, I think. It was Canon Nazi acting up again.

Alas, the general opinion about The Silmarillion, even among some of the alleged great fans of professor's work, is that people force themselves to read it and then pretend to have enjoyed it just so that they could seem smarter and more devoted than average fans. Truth be told, it even made me doubt for a while whether it was really my favourite of Tolkien's works or if I was merely a poser. So I guess one can't blame people for not even daring to read it.

I feel better now. I had someone--Ari, I think--give me the basics of LaCE, so I can call those blunders. But I figured that the stories I do aren't by people who've fanatically read everything by the professor, so chances of me having to know more than The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings is nil. Though if you want a fucked genealogy, read "What the Heck?" in which Elros suddenly named his children differently and those children spawned Mary Sues who were born in our world and BAMFed into Middle earth.

True, and I daresay not even The Hobbit is needed, at least until Jackson finishes his new project *shudder*. I've heard it might actually contain a Mary Sue, since the book doesn't have a female lead, and noone since Kubrick (that I know of) has dared make a Hollywood movie without at least the hints of completely-unnecessary-to-the-plot-progression romance.

And if they find Lord of the Rings books tedious to read, they probably wouldn't be able to get past Valaquenta...pity, there is more than enough single and properly characterized Elven royalty for them to lust for than the scraps that LotR gives. Mind you, though it means less Sues, it didn't prevent slashers.

If you ever think about changing your mind, the story is actually great. I reccomend reading a good synopsis, the genealogy and geography parts are easier to bear when you know you have something to look forward to - or you can just skim them and refer to them when necessary. The Cimmerian's JRRT Legendarium section has "Blogging the Silmarillion" series of posts, a rather good summary, in my opinion, which highlights the really impressive characters and deeds one might otherwise overlook when reading, beacuse the book isn't written in a style that makes one sympathize with characters - it lays down facts and events and leaves the interpretation of them to the reader, which leads to the "dry, boring, and a pain to read" opinion since few bother to contemplate what they read further. I'd have probably found Dante's Inferno such, as well, if I weren't using a Reader's Guide and thinking about deeper meaning of verses , rather than just reading on as one would a fairytale story or one of modern bestsellers.
