Paying Tribute to the Past
Well guys, I've decided to try and write this and make some LotR characters end up in Mata Nui, the only world in Bionicle we know so far (next year we'll be on a new planet and universe, but I won't go there, or I'll just confuse you all).

I'll try to make it a nice read, with as many nice pictures of Mata Nui and Bionicle characters as I can find so you readerscan imagine some stuff.

My main worry is mostly the LotR cast. I'm afraid you guys will MST me if I'm doing bad. XD So please, help me out a bit if I go off-track with in-characterness of LotR characters, okies?

We won't MST you, there's the slight fact we'd have to know something about Bioincle for that to work, and of course we'll help. We're not like Suethor reveiwers who will go 'OMG thats is liek so awesome u should so write more'.
Merlin: Thank you.
Arthur: For what? For lying to my father to save your worthless hide? If you ever put me in that situation again, Merlin, I will clap you irons myself.

Good luck, Refi - Look forward to seeing the results! I will say, however, that of all the fandoms I know Tolkien is the hardest to do successful crossovers with. A few possible pitfalls ...

1. It's a different world
Most crossovers involve 20th/21st century Earth settings, and are relatively simple to set up. Wanna do Highlander/X-Men? Well, it's simplicity itself to have Duncan stumble across Prof Xavier's school. And then they can interact and get hold of a plot and yadda yadda yadda. But no-one else uses Middle Earth as their setting. You've got the initial problem of how to get the fandoms together, and you'll have huge linguistic and cultural differences to bridge thereafter.

2. Tone
Middle Earth is a high-fantasy setting, and the underlying feel of the stories is far removed from modern sensibilities. If you put the Doctor or House in there, they'll just start making fun of it. Alternatively, if they pick up the mood and go all generic fantasy hero on you, they'll end up losing their essential Doctorness or Houseness. A very tricky balance to keep up.

3. Plot complexity
LoTR may look haphazrd at times, but it's a very tightly-plotted structure. Start dropping random visitors from other universes into the mix and the whole thing starts to unravel. You'll have to rewrite huge chunks of the novels to make the story logic work. Suethors please note: cutting and pasting dialogue from the movies is NOT an acceptable substitute.

4. Fandom complexity
Crossovers are always tricky, because you have to be on top of your game in two different fandoms and keep them in balance right through the story. Tolkien spent most of his life developing Middle Earth, and the amount of history and mythology you have to learn is vast. More than that, if your crossed-over characters have to spend any time in Middle Earth, they'll have a vast amount to learn too. And you have to show that without writing chapters full of people talking in exposition to each other.

5. Cliches!
If anyone in your story starts falling in love with Legolas, start worrying. The fandom's full of hackneyed scenarios - and while it is still possible to write a good story on such premises, you'll have to fight against the obvious all the way.
"From the moment I picked up your book until I laid it down, I was convulsed with laughter. Some day I intend reading it."

Luckily, pitfall 5 is easy to avoid. Why? Bionicle characters don't love. Not like we can have love in the further-than-friendship way. Bionicle characters can go as far as good friends and no further because they don't reproduce that way.

As for the rest of the pitfalls, thanks for telling me! I appreciate it. Also reminds me that there will be a language barrier, because LotR characters don't speak Matoran, and Bionicle characters don't speak Sindarin/Westron/All the other ME languages.

So really, thanks for the advice. ^_^

Which easily can be fixed by Kanohi Rau: Mask of Translation.

Don't worry too much, Refie. I'm sure you'll be fine, since you have read the books, and you respect the fandom, unlike Suethors.

Well, everybody can now check out my story in the LotR fanfiction "Unity, Duty and Destiny" and see if my crappy idea is passably written.
