All of Legolas' "Captain Obvious" lines sounded like either the screenwriters were trying to a) be all deep and dramatic or make sure EVERYONE knew what was going on.And yet he's still the one all the Sues want. <_< Oh, Sian, PJ is still producing The Hobbit and therefore has a say in what happens. He'll probably collaborate on the script as well. |

Considering Hollywood audiences supposedly can't tell the difference between Raymond and Reynald, I think they might have needed a Captain Obvious to make sure that they got the story. |

LEGOLAS: This is no mere Ranger. He is Aragorn son of Arathorn. You owe him your allegiance. ARAGORN (annoyed): Legolas... BOROMIR: This...is Isildur´s heir? ARAGORN: Er...my Lord Boromir, could we talk over this in private later? I fear Legolas is being rather... LEGOLAS: And heir to the throne of Gondor! ARAGORN (sigh): Legolas, shut up. You´re insulting him and embarrassing me. |

I also believe that statement is the reason why everyone thinks that Legolas and Aragorn were childhood friends, friends for life. Why else would Legolas defend him so? |

Well, supposedly in Bakshi´s cartoon, they do greet each other like old friends. And PJ has stated before that he actually LIKED Bakshi´s cartoon when he first saw it, and it influenced his work on the live-action trilogy. Maybe that´s it. |

Over the past few days, something rather scary has happened: I have learned to love Denethor. And I have never liked him before, even in the book. I don´t know if I´m just fed up with the bubbly, often annoyingly-cheerful optimists I´ve been traveling with (seriously; listening to somebody gush over a cute puppy while you´re worrying about making arrangements for a bus trip is thoroughly unpleasant). I don´t know if it was the latest Denethor-abuses-Faramir fic I read on ff.net. But it came to me all of a sudden that before he went insane, he must have been one sophisticated, sarcastic, cool guy. Am I being far-fetched when I say he would make a wonderful sporker of horrible fanfiction? Or that he would be the perfect person to sit around and snobbily criticize books and art and music with? Or that in temperament and fate he reminds me somewhat of Javert? Or that John Noble, despite the limitations and deficiencies of the script, actually played him quite nicely? It actually strikes me as odd that there is so little wangsty romance fanfiction about him. I realize that the teenage fanbrats wouldn´t touch him with a ten-foot-pole. But what about the OLDER women, especially those Suethors who pride themselves on supposedly being able to see past a "villain´s" cold exterior to his warm, caring heart underneath? (If they took that point of view, they wouldn´t even have to read the books). I mean, they´ve done it many times for Snape, Javert, Erik, and even Elrond, so why not Denethor? Of course the fact that he has two grown-up sons is probably a turn-off, but hell, Legolas didn´t deter Mary A. and Mal from writing about their kinky sex with Thranduil. And, even worse, Tracey fell in love with Elrond despite his children, all three of whom were over two thousand years old. Urgh...got some pretty unpleasant pictures in my head just now, so I´ll shut up. I´m probably just making up crazy ideas about Denethor, but if they got me to love a character I previously disliked, I´ll accept them. I´m also pretty sure Denethor will be one of my guest sporkers for an upcoming MST, but I´m not sure which one yet. |

Okay, 1): Puppies are cute, but not that cute. You get the bus then coo over the little doggie. Anyway, I agree. We met Denethor late in the game, when his mind has been corrupted and twisted by the Palantir, so it is not easy to like him right off. However, it would be interesting to go back and read Denethor has he might have been before gazing into the Palantir. With Findulas and their young sons. It would be a wonderful read in the hands of the right author. However, some of the kinkest fics I've read have come courtesty from supposedly older women. I do believe there are some Denethor-Findulas stories out there. I'll see if I can find any if you want (don't worry, I'll pre-screen them). |

1) Cheerful, bubbly people get on my nerves too, that's why I prefer the evil people, like Sauron, Vader, Voldie ect. I can see what you mean about Denethor, even though his mind is all twisted when we met him I never hated him, I think I felt sorry for him more than anything. And you're right a good fanfic about what he was like before then would be a nice change from 'Denethor's liek so mean'. |

That´d be nice. And yes, the screening would be much appreciated: there is some pretty damn horrible stuff out there. I still think the worst was that slash and incest and rape fic on adultfanfiction.net I provided the link to on some review thread (was it for Gimli/You?) in which not only Denethor, but Boromir and Aragorn were so OOC that the only thing they had in common with their canon counterparts was their names. Basically, Denethor and Aragorn were both creepy rapists, and Boromir was their angsty, spineless victim--but he ended up loving Aragorn, because Aragorn´s rape was sweet and loving, and Aragorn kept SAYING that he wanted to protect Boromir from his father (and end sarcasm). It was hideous, and I mean Celebrian and VotE hideous. But I truly don´t think the author who wrote that was an adult, despite the sad fact that a lot of the most disgusting slash and rape fics are actually written by adults. I´m guessing it was a teenage or twentysomething fanbrat, because she also wrote a Mary Sue in which Arwen insisted on coming along with the Fellowship and was conveniently killed by Uruk-hai at Amon Hen (I´m not making this up. And what about poor Boromir´s death scene, eh?). Enter Mary Sue, a telepathic elf who pops out of the middle of nowhere to lift Aragorn´s spirits, because we all know that a man´s spirits are easy to lift when his betrothed of almost forty years and the love of his life has been stabbed to death (and end sarcasm). Fortunately, I flamed that story, and it was deleted before Aragorn had to have healing sex with Mary Sue. Unfortunately, the character-slaughtering nightmare slashfic was not deleted. Still, if anyone finds a Denethor-Sue, in which Mary Sue rides to Minas Tirith or falls into Middle-earth to cheer up Denethor after Finduilas´s death, I´ll be interested in reading it, despite the awful premise, for its uniqueness. |

I'll have a look around. And that's the reason why I don't go to adultfanfiction.net. I just read the sporked versions--if I can handle even that. Sometimes when reading the deleterius sporking of "The Prisoner of Imladris," I just read the comments. Of course, every chapter is nearly identical--Legolas wangsts about being Elrond's sex slave and being separated from his true love Glorfindel, then Elrond comes in and has kinky, overdescribed sex with Legolas, who enjoys it and then goes back to wangsting away. And there's a real people fic alternative featuring Hugo Weaving, Orlando Bloom and Viggo Mortensen. |

Oh, God, I remember the sporking of "Prisoner of Imladris". I didn´t dare read it without the sporkers´comments. I remember they sporked forty chapters of it--FORTY!--and it was STILL not done! How can anybody write more than forty chapters of the same old thing, with no character or plot development? I wish somebody would write a parody sequel to that fic, in which Elrond goes to the Undying Lands and Celebrian, having learned what happened from a helpful eagle of Manwe, gets really angry and violent with him for what he´s been doing. Or somebody kills rapist!Elrond and then lets the REAL Elrond out of the dungeon in which he´s been locked. |
