(Wo)man on a Mission
|
Oh, my God. I think I just figured the movie´s portrayal of Denethor out. I was confused by it before, because I know PJ filmed scenes of him and his palantir, and I couldn´t figure out why he didn´t even put those scenes in the EE. And believe it or not, before the last movie came out, I saw a picture in a movie guide of Denethor with his armor and sword on under his robe, like in the book. So what made PJ take all those developments and portray Denethor as a villain? One word, or really one letter: Dubya. I´m not kidding; I´ve got the feeling that Denethor was changed to reflect Jackson´s--and maybe the public´s--anger at George Bush! Because think of all that Bush did in 2003: more tax cuts for the rich, the invasion of Iraq--I remember when I first saw the film and Denethor sent Faramir out to retake Osgiliath, it REMINDED me of Bush´s foolhardy invasion of Iraq. And the scene of Gandalf hitting him in the head, his belly-flop off the Tower of Ecthelion--answer me honestly: wouldn´t you love to see Gandalf hit Bush over the head? Or see Bush do a flying, flaming leap off some building? Denethor in the movies and Bush even look somewhat similar to each other. It´s pretty creepy when you see the pictures. I´m not saying this makes the movie´s portrayal of Denethor any better--in fact, I feel even sorrier for Denethor, being compared to our moronic president. Still, it makes the whole situation interesting, adding a new dimension of politics to PJ´s films. And I´m wondering something: if the movies had been made when Clinton was president, would the portrayal of Denethor have been better? Or would we have had scenes of Denethor saying to the crowds of Gondorian soldiers, "I did not have sex with that woman, Miss..."? Another question: once Bush is out of the White House, will PJ release the footage he filmed of Denethor and his palantir? Or of Denethor as a more developed character? Far-fetched? Maybe. But hell, in 2003 and 2004 every artist was taking shots at the Bush administration in his or her work; what do you think J.K. Rowling based the Ministry in the fifth Harry Potter book on? Jackson was probably doing it too, though it´s awful that he sacrificed a character to do it. |

You know, that's pretty believable. Heck, if you watch Revege of the Sith in the Star Wars Saga, it's a mirror image of Bush and the War. I kept looking at my da during the whole movie going 'Da, that guys like Bush.' We laughed about it for hours. I'll have to raise your points to him... I'm surprised he didn't think of that. Brilliant deduction Jules. |

Ever hear Jason Segel and Neil Patrick Harris of "How I Met Your Mother" sing it? Apparently, they do it while waiting to film. This is adorable! |

Reason why I love the show SO much. The entire cast is funny and talented. And fortunately, the showrunners know how talented these guys are, so there are times where the characters will sing--Robin is a former Canadian pop star, Marshall sang "You Just Got Slapped," Neil Patrick Harris singing his bank's jingle... |

What show is that again? (that they're on) I have a question for you all (pretaining to Lord of the Rings of course!) When you're having a bad day, do you open one of Tolkien's books and read a passage or favourite chapter out of it? |

Nope, I go read some favourite fanfiction. The books only have one small part from Aragorns view. I generally read them while feeling relaxed and reflective. |
