The Pride of Boromir: The Reviews; What did you think?

Isn't it funny how Luinil insists she hasn't even heard of Larrkin's story? It takes the whole of two minutes to see the similarities between the stories. A coincidence? I don't think so.

As for Jules's review, it was very harsh but just to the point. I readily admit I'm a canon purist and "stories" like Pride of Boromir make my blood pressure rise to worrying levels. I just can't understand who could find that kind of thing enjoyable or even readable.

On another note, not all stories containing slash are necessarily bad. There's a quite good story in lotrfanfiction where a lesbian relationship between Queen Arwen's chambermaids is a subplot. My point is that with your own original charaters you can do whatever you want, but if you depict a canon character in an atrocious way, you will get bad reviews. Obviously Luinil hasn't heard of that.

One of Luinil's pals wrote:

Kind of funny, isn't it? There are many authors who don't get flames even though they don't write "fluffy, g-rated" stories. Their secret: They write canon characters in character and add a few interesting OC's. Mission accomplished, the story is readable. Plus, I have a tip or you, Luinil: Ignoring all bad reviews is the best way to remain a bad writer.

Wow. Luinil's whining really proves my point that she's a squeeing fanbrat. She doesn't even attempt to offer any explanation for why she changed the characters: she just basically moans, "You were so mean! You made me stop writing! I hope you're happy!" I wonder how old she is; from her tone in that rant and in her author's notes, she sounds about fourteen at most. In which case, she's way too young to be writing about pedophilia and rape anyway.

Honestly, aside from raping (pardon the pun) Denethor's character until he's completely unrecognizable, her treatment of child-rape is disgusting. Because she's written an original fic on adultfanfiction in which a father rapes and abuses his three-year-old daughter--and all this abuse is used as a plot point to get people to feel sorry for the Mary Sue, the sister of the abused toddler.

I don't even want to know what was going through her mind when she watched the Return of the King movie. I've seen people deduce plenty of things about Denethor from the movie when they haven't read the books. They call him a psychopath; I can understand that. They bash him for trying to kill his son; I can understand that. They write fanfics in which he treats Faramir the way Cinderella's stepmother treated her; all right, it's far-fetched and cliched, but if you haven't read the background information on Denethor, I can sort of see how you'd jump to such a conclusion. But a RAPIST?! A PEDOPHILE?! Who ABUSES THE SON THAT PETER JACKSON TOOK CARE TO SHOW THAT HE LOVED?!

Honestly, such people are just plain perverted and there's no help for them. I mean, I've only read one other rapist!Denethor fic, in which Boromir and Faramir had a Mary Sue sister who was the target of Denethor's incestuous desires. Of course, this girl was ignorant of canon on a Phantom's Ange level: according to her, Arathorn was king of Gondor and Denethor stole his throne. I'm not kidding. PJ left Aragorn's lineage pretty well muddled and unclear in the films, but I would have thought even the dumbest fanbrat alive could figure out that Aragorn and his family have been in exile a LONG time. Apparently not, however.

Anyway, Refia, thanks for defending me. I'm not insulted by Luinil's bootlickers kissing her ass and badmouthing me; I kind of expected it to happen. But now I'm worrying that I was altogether too harsh with her. I hope I didn't cause Luinil too much pain; she's probably an angsty teenager, and I'm a little worried about what she'll do to herself.

You're welcome Jules. Besides, I wanted to tell her a few things that were on my chest, too. And don't worry about your harshness. At least your points were all very, very valid. Harsh, perhaps, but very reasonable. There are much, much worse flamers out there, who don't even bother to explain why they leave a bad reply. You told it in all the colours of the rainbow. If she still whines about how mean you were, it's obious she missed the point of your review. So don't worry too much, really. If she stops writing because you were "so mean!" then that's a good thing for LotR fanfic. Maybe stopping to write for a while will help her mature.

You're right. And thank you. She was right as well.

I wonder if she means it.

Oh, God--I think she did mean it. It's been deleted from adultfanfiction--and I lost the copies of the chapters I saved. I'll have to get the text from the deleterious sporking to MST it.

While it is a little more than coincidence, she may not remember the name of the story and author. There are times where I've been writing something and it sounded too familiar so I change it, but I can't remember where I read it. I can't remember every story I've read.

I believe in her adultfanfiction profile she claims to be 21, but she doesn't read as that age. I know that by 20 I was wise enough to know I couldn't write rape and pedophilia properly. But it is possible she's just trying to make herself seem older and if she were younger, it would make the 14 years-old muse make more sense (though I still want to know under what circumstances should we excuse one who is driving, even if tragically killed by a drunk driver).

I remember that! Oh, that was horrible. And I forget, didn't her brothers suspect but do nothing anyway?

Good luck with that Jules! I think I'll go play "sparrow" again and let Larrkin know the story's been deleted.

Yup. AND Mary Sue was, naturally, one of Gandalf's best friends, and she told Gandalf nothing, even though in the fic, Gandalf's hatred of Denethor went even beyond the film portrayal. And get this: Mary Sue was also a warrior, who could beat both Boromir and Faramir at swordfighting. But she did nothing, and I mean nothing, to defend herself from Denethor, obviously because the Suethor wanted her to suffer "zomg teh angst from teh ebul Denathor!1!!!111!!lolz!!!!111!" Of course the crowning touch of awfulness for this fic was that Aragorn fell in love with the Sue. This was offensive and senseless for two reasons:

1. Arwen was conveniently absent, and the Suethor provided no explanation.
2. Aragorn, being 87, was about the same age as Denethor was when the latter supposedly raped her--and yet Mary Sue was not even disgusted, let alone horrified.

Yes, it was horrible. Fortunately, the last time I checked, it hadn't been updated since 2005; hopefully the Suethor gave up on it because she knows better now. It got only two flames after it was sporked on deleterious--one from me--and naturally the squeeing fanbrats rushed to the Suethor's defense, but she still hasn't updated. Now if she would just take the monstrosity off the internet, I'd be sure she's actually matured since she wrote it.

Good news; I managed to get the other three chapters from the other site Luinil had them posted at--they're still there. Since obviously I can't trust my shitty pen drive, I emailed them to myself. You might have to wait a while for the rest of the MST, since this week is exam week, and I'm going back to the US at the end, so I'm a bit busy now. But at least I've got the chapters.

Yes, I remember the sporking on deleterius. No matter how many stories I MST, I am still boggled at how many writers seem impervious to logic. At a young age, we're told that fiction is make-believe, it isn't real. But it seems these writers haven't figured out that fiction may be made up, but it still has to reflect what is real. Logic still rules fiction, it still has to be believeable.

Can't wait to read the rest! I hope Boromir survives this.

Yes, the lack of logic is appalling; the story would still be bad even if Denethor WAS a rapist in canon.

Oh, wait. It's going to be a nightmare for Boromir, maybe worse than "An Elf's Love".

Well of course, in AEL he wasn't the main character, nor was he gay.

True, but in AEL version 1, he was turned into a cartoonish villain similar to the two in "Two Hearts, One Soul". Especially considering that he tried to rape Rosa in that version (he would have in version 2, the one I MST´d, I'm sure, but thankfully PA didn't get that far).

I told Larrkin the story was down and she thanks us all again for spotting the plagiarism and you, Jules, for speaking out against the fic.
