So, it's been a while since I last posted anything on my "Fanfiction for Dummies" blog. Mostly because I was trying to catch up with my "A Writer's Journey" blog. And because I didn't have any ideas. But thanks to the growing pain in my other wisdom tooth (at least, I think that's what it is. It could also be coming from my sinus, damn weather change) and the dizziness (a side affect of the Tylenol with Codeine #4 I took to combat said pain), I finally got an idea. There are fanon beliefs out there that contradict canon that need to die. And there are several of them alone in Lord of the Rings. What am I talking about? Well, how about the fact everyone seems to think the Council of Elrond was planned? Or the people who think Elrond is a king? So I'm asking you to help me: Which LOTR fanon beliefs (ones that specifically contradict canon and not just ones you don't think are plausible) do want to see killed dead? |

Um, that Rivendell is a city, that Mirkwood Elves live aboveground, and that Pippin and Merry are children. Pippin was young, and maybe he wasn't what the Hobbits would consider an adult, but even in the movie he wasn't skipping around and pulling pranks and suchnot at inappropriate times. And, yes, the Council of Elrond being all planned out. That one definitely annoys me. |

Lust. What a strange fate that we should suffer so much angst and annoyance over such a small thing. Why, its the wonderful magic of wish fulfillment! Do, or do not. There is no think with the Mary Sue. | |

That doesn't count. That's an image specifically from the movie so it doesn't count as "fanon." Thanks anyway. ETA: Just so we're all clear--even if something from the movie contradicts the books, it doesn't count. I'm considering the movies "canon." |

Ahh, yes, that's one for the list. Especially when added that "he's a jerk to Legolas." I've seen it. Usually leads to a Sue comforting Legolas. With sex. |

The belief that there were more Half-Elves around? Or that such character is likely to exist? But there is def. no excuse for believing that any sort of social stigma would be attached to mixed race character after seeing canonical one (Elrond) be treated with respect by everyone. That Elrond is royalty (technically, noble blood but he never took a title). That Elves are promiscuous and/or had children from extramarital affairs? (Not sure if anything of this is excused by screwing up Arwen's subplot. If it is, just strike it through.) That Haldir is an asshole. (He was doing his job.) That Dwarves are morons, misogynists and care only about food, battle and ale. (Well...they care about gold too! And they are honorable. And skilled craftsmen.) That Boromir and/or Denethor is evil, misogynist, rapist, sadist and/or psychopath. That that kiss on Boromir's forehead had homoerotic context. That every mention of "love" must mean romantic one. That Eowyn settled for less by picking Faramir. That Ring only influenced evil people. That Faramir is a wimp. That Elladan and Elrohir are ME version of Weasley twins. That Glorfindel and Erestor were practically a married couple. (No, seriously. Just filter LotR fics by "Glorfindel".) ETA: Or that Glorfindel and Erestor were BFFs/frenemies and got up to shenanigans and/or babysitted twins and/or Arwen. That's it for now. |

Whoa. I'm not doing all of those, but thanks. And I've decided--I'm not taking on any fanon pairings. So thanks for the Glorfindel/Erestor suggestions, but as a Snape/Hermione fan, I'm not going to take on ships. |

Okay, but the idea they played pranks on one another or babysitted Elrond's children is unrelated to them being a couple. I'm not sure why I put that pairing at all. It's more the fact that they are token couple that baffles me, I guess. They are never shown interacting. Snamione exists, but it's one of ships. These two are practically a given.(Not saying you should include them, just saying why I picked them and not Aragorn/Legolas or Frodo/Sam.) |

This. So this.
This, too. Dwarves are probably my favourite race in Middle-earth (mostly thanks to their origin. Thank you, Aule!), and I hate to see nearly everyone portray them like described above. Also, that there was some open, outspoken racism between Dwarves and Elves. That there was no love between the races is a known fact, that doesn't mean that they instantly came to blow or started slinging insults at each other. Of course I suspect it depends on the location, but I am quite sure that the Dwarves that came to Rivendell with Gloin (during LOTR, not the Hobbit) and the Elves there treated each other with courtesy and respect, past grievances between the races or not. |

I'm willing to cut authors some slack here because while everyone would play nice in Elrond's home - everybody liked him, plus there was probably law about respecting host's domain - out there on their respective territories things would have been different. Remember Gimli's treatment at entrance to Lorien? I imagine "Dark days" mentioned were Sack of Doriath and most remnants of Doriath live either there or in Mirkwood. Elrond's home is consisted of remnants of Gil-galad's kingdom plus survivors of Eregion, mostly Noldor and old allies of Dwarves. I doubt Dwarves would have been willing to go to a council organised by Galadriel or Thranduil. Particularly movie watchers would bear in mind quarrels between Legolas and Gimli (looking completely unreasonable since cellar Dwarves were not explained) and Wardens of Lorien (again, not knowing the backstory). So as far as movie goes, open hatred there is a logical conclusion. I guess Elrond is seen as exception since it's a council so they are having a truce? |

I admit that's true. However, I've seen a lot of fanfics that make the relationship between Elves and Dwarves as if they saw each other as spawn of Morgoth, which is a bit of an exageration. I know there's bad blood between them due to Doriath and stuff, but let's not forget that even in "The Hobbit", when the people of the Lake, the Dwarves and the Elves of Mirkwood were quarreling, they put all of that aside and fought together against the Orcs. Grievances their might have been between the races, but they would put those aside at least momentarily to fight against the Enemy. I'm not sure if, for example, Thranduil or Galadriel had suggested a temporary alliance between them and the Dwarves to go against a massive army of Orcs coming their way, for example, that the Dwarves would have refused. Or the other way around. I think they both had too much common sense for that. |

I agree that it gets exaggerated sometimes. Of course they would ally against their eldest enemy first. I doubt they would shed blood easily. But there would probably be some harsh words and abuse thrown around. (Remember, that alliance at Battle of Five Armies took holding Arkenstone hostage to happen.) |

I agree--all those LotR fanon cliches need to die in a fire. I have more, but they tie into the ones already mentioned, so you might not need to list them separately: That Elves visited each other's kingdoms and domains all the time (i.e., Legolas hanging around in Rivendell or Lothlorien). That Gondor was an evil empire, with tyrants and slavery. That Rohan was "a simple country with happy people who loved to enjoy themselves" (yes, this is an actual quote from a fic). That Sauron would even consider taking a wife or concubine and sharing power. That Mirkwood is a pretty, sunny forest, with flowers and waterfalls (Giant spiders? What giant spiders?). That the Mirkwood Elves lived in a palace. That Elves are delicate, fragile little wimps who have to be carried everywhere and who curl up in a ball and cry whenever something bad happens to them. That Elves were not only promiscuous, but practiced incest, rape, and slavery. That Haldir is the only marchwarden in Middle-earth. That male pregnancy actually exists (of course, this is common to a lot of fandoms; I don't know if you want to count it). That Hobbits are promiscuous and have nothing better to do than talk about courting and sex (yes, I'm looking at you, Adelaide). That Hobbits are just like little kids. That Middle-earth magic is just like Harry Potter magic. That Gandalf can teach people to do magic and would even have time to take on an apprentice. And here's a really huge one: That English and Westron are the same language. |

I think someone confused Rohan with the Shire.
I'm just looking for ones specific to Lord of the Rings. So, no, I won't be counting it. Okay, you guys can keep naming fanon beliefs you believe need to die, but I think I now have WAY too many for my blog and about half of these I had no clue existed so I'm not going to use them. If I can't elaborate on them, I won't write about them. But thanks, guys! |
