Hello friend,

Welcome to the archives of Renatia Nova, the third edition of the epic roleplaying franchise created by -DS- in 2008.

Over the past four years hundreds of people around the world have joined together to participate in the art of world-crafting, of collaborative storywriting, and above all epic role playing in a play-by-post environment. This forum is one of many similar realms created entirely from the imaginations of its inhabitants, an impressive plethora of crafted nations that include cultures, characters, languages, maps, as well as a whole other assortment of data entirely up to the author to synthesize.

Nation-State Play-By-Post Roleplaying (NS-PBP-RP) remains a very entertaining, intellectually stimulating, and educational experience that leaves us wanting for more. Bar none the best part of the entire genre is the fan-base, the community, and the people I've met along the way in sharing our common interest.

Renatia deserves another chance. We all deserve the opportunity to relive the world we created. Check back soon for exciting news.

Sincerely,

Freeman

From what Theldin Pharks could see, the whole area was devoid of civilization. A small mountain range poked up on the horizon, and that was where they were headed. The helicopter was noisy, but Theldin never complained when on company business. He did, however, ask:

"How long until we land?" He had to shout above the din of the rotors.
"Ten, maybe fifteen minutes." replied the pilot.

Theldin sat back and decided to listen to his colleagues.

"...Really?" Koren Marn, the Geologist, was saying, "I Don't think there is gold. Just look at the location. It is probably something like Iron or some kind of Oil deposit." He stroked his scruffy, short beard.

"No, i swear! I know a guy who was on the initial expedition." Said Gragar Lome, the surveyor. "He said they found something, and its going to be a boon for Graanid!"

"So really, you don't know much?" Came the sly response from Pilius Munn, the junior geologist, his Tarkanean accent barely showing. Koren snickered and Gragar looked mildly hurt.
((Hows the name, Mr. S? I can edit it later))

"Well, just you wait. You'll see."

"What do you think Theldin? Think we'll find riches beyond imagining?" Koren asked.

Theldin snapped out of his absent minded eavesdropping. "Oh, uh, I dunno guys. I'm just a corporate liason. I don't know much about the geography. All I know is they wouldn't be sending me if they didn't have something worth while."

"True enough!" Remarked Pilius. "I'm sure there is something worth while. Look, there's the site!"

They all looked out the nearest window. A small compound could be seen, with a few rigging materials hovering above the floodlights. The pilot began descent.

The white helicopter, with the Dual R insignia for Rollis Resourcing, settled on the dust. Theldin was first to exit, shielding his head form the dust, followed in short order by Koren, Gragar, and Pilius. Ruperd Saks was the site manager, and was there to greet them, his characteristic hardhat slightly askew.

"Welcome to the site." He said, shaking hands with his guests. Koren and Pilius seemed distracted by the relief, while Gragar was taking everything in. "Come on over to the offices, I'll bring you up to speed."

---------

"The survey gave us a pretty good look. We have a little bit of know-how as far as interpreting the results, but the reason you gentlemen are here is to look at the results, and verify them. You geologists know what to look for. Gragar, you're here because, if there is a good find--which, as you can see, there is a good indication that there is SOMETHING of value down there, we'll open up a mine and we'll need to get a camp going, housing, and build a road. Who knows, there may be more mineral-rich deposits elsewhere in this territory. Theldin, once we figure everything out, i've been told to have a chat with you about market share and investment--how to break the news to investors so as to prevent competition from flying out here and getting themselves a piece of the action. I'm told the folks up in Graanikep is going through the process of approving a large land lease, but we'll see how that goes. Anyway, what do you make of all this?" Ruperd leaned back and put his hands in his pockets.

After a few moments hesitation, Koren was the first to speak: "When do we start?"

-------------

Koren and Pilius had been sent off to work with the geological surveying equipment. Theldin didn't know much about it or how it worked--though he thought he might go and ask since that might be kind of important. He DID know about Markets and investors, and that was where his conversation with Ruperd was very rewarding. Ruperd didn't know much about the business aspect, but he picked it up quickly.

"So you see, if we make a big press deal about our find, before the legal work has gone through, this mountain will be swamped with other corporations. You'll see about twenty helicopters on the horizon the morning after, and that will make staking a claim that much more difficult--even if it does mean a brief uptick in our stocks. For the longest term benefit, we downplay the find, and then we start increasing our output and imply that this is a good find." Theldin was saying.

"I get it now, don't want to provide too much information, or we'll shoot ourselves in the foot."

"Yep. So what do you expect might be down there?"

"Well, we're fairly certain there is iron. The mountain itself is made out of shale, which might provide oil--and of course there is a high likelihood of oil being elsewhere in the territory, we just haven't scoped it out yet. We are sure there are other heavy metals down there as well, but we won't know until we either get a real deep core sample or open 'er up for drilling."

"I see. How much time does it usually take to open up a mine?"

"A Place like this? Could be a month before we get down anywhere meaningful. its a very involved process."

"I see." Theldin was taking notes. "So we want the rights to the land as soon as possible, so we can start that process."

"Yep." Ruperd said. "But, say, aren't land leases public domain? Other corporations might see that you're buying up land."

"True, but they won't know until they come here. It will spark curiosity, but if someone is already here why waste resources duplicating their work, when you can wait to see that the work has paid off. I like to call it Market Vulturism, but others call it 'shrewdness'."

There was a small commotion outside the door. "Whats going on out there?" Theldin asked.

"Looks like your geologists are coming back."

Koren rushed up to the door and pushed it open, where Ruperd and Theldin stared slackjawed at him.

"We've found Uranium."

Pilius Munn had been really excited when the Geiger counter showed positive. There was uranium there, but if there was enough quantities to make mining profitable couldn't be said until they had performed better surveys.

Back at the camp he and the senior geologist Koren Marn had been questioned.
"It seems likely to be a larger find, but we'd need a gamma-ray detector to be completely sure" Marn told Teldin Pharks. "But even without uranium, there are plenty of minerals. Iron, gold, we're sitting on a, well, a goldmine!"
"We still have to do more surveying though" said Pilius carefully "While it looks promising, we can't say for sure if the finds here are large and pure enough to warrant the cost of extracting them"

Pilius was however more certain of the value of the finds than he had let on. He had lived in Graanid for most of his life, his family moved there when he was still young. He had been educated, lived and worked in Graanid, and to most he seemed to have adopted his new homeland well. Therefore no one had felt that it was a problem to bring him on the expedition. But while seemingly busy examining a possible ore vein he took out his small transceiver and quickly sent a short, coded message.

-----

Inerus of House Edane looked at the note in his hands.
"So our suspicions were true... A veritable gold mine he says!" he turned to the man beside him, Masirus of House Occea. "Has the Supreme Dictator been notified?"
"Yes, sir, and he has been especially notified of your contribution to this find, challenger"
"Excellent" Inerus laughed. "It is good that these idiots can do the job of surveying for us. But while they waste time getting investors and calculating profit, we will spring to action."

-----

A few days later Pilius was just putting on his clothes as he heard some shouts outside.
"What's going on?" he asked Koren.
"Helicopters! Whole loads of 'em have showed up. They're setting up camps all around the mountain!"
"What? Are they from other corporations? I thought we made sure they wouldn't come here!"
"No, they're from Tarkanea!"

Theldin had been packing his bags. He was going to go back early, write up a report to give to the Board, and see what was next on his task list. It was going to go well, like clockwork.

And then the Tarkaneans arrived.

"SHIT." he shouted, and ran outside, tie flapping over his shoulder. The helicopters were coming from the north east, which didn't make any sense at all, until he heard mentions of "Tarkanea" all over the place. He made a call.

------

"Sir?"
"Yes, Sosin?"
"A Mr. Phark for you?"
"What does he want?"
"Something about the new mine site, he says its urgent."
"Give me the call, thank you."
A Pause.
"Theldin?"
"Mr. Rollis, Hello."
"Hello, good to hear from you. How is the site?"
"Uh, its gone to shit. The Tarkaneans showed up."
Rollis sat up in his chair. "What?"
"Tarkanean helicopters. They haven't landed yet, but they are headed this way. I...I don't know much else besides that. But I figure whatever strings you can pull to get that lease, you better pull it soon."
"Dammit man, are you sure?"
"Damn sure. I'm not going to come back, i have my laptop and there is wifi here, i'm going to type up the report and try and have it to you in the next couple hours. Very promising find, but the roll out is not going to be optimal. With the Tarkaneans here, everyone is going to know that this is a damned good site."
"Thank you, Theldin. I'll look forward to your report."

Andam Rollis hung up the phone. What would Tarkanea want with them? was it the mine? Was it some bullshit about encroachment? Tarkaneans were imperialists, so he knew everything they did would be backed by the government. So he needed to get the government behind them. He picked up the phone.

"Sosin?"
"Yes Mr. Rollis?"
"Cancel my appointments, pass along my regrets."
"May I ask why?"
"Tell them an urgent internal discussion."
"Will do."

Then he called his lobbyist.

"Smeeth?"
"Rollis, good to hear from you. You know, I was just talking about the amortization standards for--"
"Not now, Smeeth. Remember that site we're surveying in the Territories?"
"Yeah, uh, whats it called, Site 604. Hows that coming? Need the lease expedited?"
"Dammit man, Tarkanea showed up."
A pause, but Rollis could hear Smeeth breathing. "Did they?"
"Yes. I just got off the phone with a rep on site. I bet the helicopters have landed by now."
"Shit, Andam, this is tricky. On the one hand your lease covers a lot of territory. Since the Tarkaneans have probably landed by now, we have us a dispute. On the other hand, There is a small block among conservative legislators--and i'll have to convene with my colleagues in Virgikep and Rhekep to be sure--but we may be able to arrange something that would allow you to maintain your lease."
"What?"
"Trust me on this one."
--Rollis knew what that meant. It meant that in the future, if his Lobbyist went up in flames or there was an inquiry or something, it was best Rollis knew very little.
"Ok. So what should I do in the meantime?"
"Well, you're on your own. See if you can find out what the Tarkaneans want, where they are. I'll have some progress to report within 24 hours, actions will be taken within 36. Forward me everything you know as soon as you know it."
"Thanks, will do."

Rollis was not very happy.

-------

"Theldin here."
"Theldin, its Rollis. You are the Corporate Rep on site, you find out what the Tarks want, what they are doing. Try and negotiate something. Forward me as much info as you can as soon as possible, I have something in the works. Can you do this?"
"Uh, I haven't much experience mediating--"
"All people are the same, and you can deal with people just fine. You got this. I have to go." Click.

Damn. The Tarkaneans would be landing fairly close--within driving range at best, flying range at worst. He decided to plan for the worst. He found the pilot sipping Coffee in a break room.

"Hey."
"Hey, ready to go?"
"Change in plans--" He saw the pilots expression change. "Don't worry, you'll be paid overtime and then some. I need you to take me over to where those helicopters land, as soon as we know where they are landing."
"Sure thing, bud. I'll keep an eye on 'em, and start up the chopper when I think we should leave."
"Perfect, thank you."

He called up the site manager, Ruperd. "Ruperd? Thallis. Get ready, we're going to talk with our guests as soon as we know where they are landing."

"We're here now, we'll land in a minute" the pilot shouted. Tanius Eram nodded and put the documents he had been reading back into his briefcase.

As soon as the helicopter had touched down on the ground the men on board jumped out and begun carrying survey and camp equipment out. They were to set up a first forward base now until trucks arrived to build up a permanent mining outpost.

Tanius barked out some orders to the people around him, they obeyed quickly. While Tanius wasn't noble, he was a very likely candidate for adoption not to mention that he had many contacts within the religious hierarchy. Furthermore his large frame and dark skin were both things that commanded respect among Tarkaneans.

When everyone was seemingly busy Tanius lay down his briefcase on the table someone had quickly put up for him. He pulled out the documents again and went though his documents.
"Nothing to complicated" he said casually to his assistant. "We'll send out a few survey teams, look out the best possible mining positions and keep things running until the main force arrives. The important thing, so have I been instructed by Challenger Edane, is speed." He looked up from the papers again and saw the other helicopters disappear in the distance. They were supposed to set up similar camps all over the area.

"Mr Eram"
Tanius turned to towards the man that spoken, it was one of the ordinary workers.
"What?"
"There's an helicopter coming from the east, probably from the Graanid camp we passed earlier"
Tanius frowned slightly.
"I expected such. Oh well, I guess we better prepare for their arrival. Someone get me some chairs here!"

------

Eliphas of house Kanteron, Supreme Dictator of the Tarkanean Empire, rose from his chair at the conference table.
"You fucking idiot!" he shouted. Inerus of Edane, the target of his wrath, cowered in his chair. "I am sure that when I gave you the mission to oversee this project I told you to handle it discretely, and to not rush things!"
"Dictator, It was evident that the resources we needed were there, so I made sure to act fast and-"
"Act fast!? Act fast!? What you have done is warned them! Had you not had your head shoved up your ass you would have done things slowly! We knew that they weren't going to take their sweet time to avoid drawing the attention of other corporations, giving us the time to fully prepare. We could have moved in quickly and decisively and gained full rightful claim over the area before Graanid even knew we were interested! Now it's going to turn into a race!
"It will still take time for them, they have to work through the thick bureaucracy and their slow inefficient democracy. When they have finally decided that they need to do something, our settlers will already be there!"
"Perhaps, but don't forget Tzeentch's golden rule"
"Oh, eh..."
"Don't underestimate your enemy you spineless Slaanesh-sucking worm! This operation is big, really big. I give you chance to prove yourself for the gods. If you fail, don't bother to return"
Inerus swallowed and nodded before hastily leaving the room.

The pilot started up his chopper as soon as the offending vehicles began descent. He looked out to the site managers annex and it was only a moment before Theldin and Ruperd were rushing over.

"Thanks" Theldin said as he climbed into his seat. He then turned to Ruperd and presumably continued their conversation.

"So we get there, We'll ask them whats going on, go all friendly like. Yeah?"

"Yeah."

"And then we'll ask them who their contact with Rollis Resourcing is."

"Yeah. Sounds good. A trick of sorts."

"And if they don't have a contact--well, we'll bluff. Say we already have the lease, they need to get permission from us, since this mountain is Rollis property."

"They won't buy that."

"They might. It'll make them hesitate, slow down. It'll take time to verify. And i know Rollis himself is working overtime to get something worked out, so it will buy us some much needed time."

"True. So...what if it goes south?"

"How so?"

"You know the stereotypes. Tarkaneans are an angry bunch. They won't like us."

"They can't hurt us. We're on Rollis Property--or so we say--and even if they don't care about that what could they do? It'd be an international scandal. Did you print the documents?"

"Yep, got 'em right here."

"Good."

((We may need to PM the dialogue, this conversation could get tricky if we're doing it between posts and don't know what the other is going to say.))
--------------------

Raman Smeeth had been busy. He had literally just gotten off the phone with some conservative leaders when Rollis called (again).

"Hey, what news from the front?"
"I called to ask you the same thing."
"You're in luck. Normally, this kind of thing would take 3 months to accomplish. You may be able to get action tomorrow--there is an emergency session of all three legislatures going on simultaneously to discuss a related issue, namely land leases in unowned territory. There apparently has been a larger lobbying front than I imagined. Some conservatives think it violates international law, but those with lobbying in the raw materials and refining industries are jumping on the opportunity."
"Wait, so, how did this get an emergency session?"
"I admit, Tarkanea expedited the process a bit. From what I hear the premier has a clever solution. You should have a decision by the end of the day tomorrow."
"Phinneas, Smeeth, can't we get it any faster?"
"Don't lose sleep over it. Your man Smeeth has you covered."
"You better."

Raman leaned back in his chair and steepled his hands. Hmmmmmmmm he thought.

As the Pilot brought the helicopter down, Theldin saw an unassuming individual wave politely at the chopper. Theldin awkwardly made eye contact, and couldn't help but wave back.

When the chopper finally landed, Theldin ran out of range of the helicopters blades, and was quickly accompanied by Ruperd. He extended his hand to the Tarkanean.

"Theldin Pharks, Corporate Liason with Rollis Resourcing." he said, matter of factly. "This is Ruperd Saks, Site Manager."

The man shook hands firmly with both. "Julius Aumes, a pleasure." He said.

"We couldn't help but notice you guys setting up camp and we thought we would come by, see if there was anything we could do to help."

"How kind." Said Julius. "Our Expedition Chief, Tanius Eram, is this way, he saw your approach and arranged hospitality. You will want to speak with him."

"Very much so. Thank you."

Julius led the pair to Tanius, Theldin couldn't help but notice that their helicopters were discernibly missing: this camp can't have been up for more than half an hour before the helicopters left. There was certainly a sense of urgency about the place.

"Mr. Eram, one Mr. Theldin Pharks and Mr. Rupderd Saks, with Rollis Resourcing Corporation."

Tanius rose to greet them heartily, an act which seemed to Theldin to have been forced, if not rehearsed. "Gentlemen, welcome, welcome! Please have a seat." He gestured to the chairs, and sat down himself. Julius disappeared somewhere, but Theldin got the impression he wasn't far.

"I'm Tanius Eram, as my friend Julius may have already mentioned. I'm leading this particular expedition. How can I help you?"

"Well, to be Honest Tanius, we saw your helicopters coming and thought we may be able to help you."

"Oh?"

"Yes, but first we wanted to just verify that your paperwork with Rollis Resourcing was in order. Can I see your lease agreement?"

Tanius hesitated, a flicker of agitation danced across his face, and said, "I'm sorry, but Lease agreement?"

"Yes, this is Rollis property. The paperwork was filed days ago--"

Ruperd nodded. "Yep, a few days now."

"--And so if you are here we figured you had filed for permission to use our land."

Tanius frowned, but didn't hesitate this time. "Well, i'm afraid there may be a misunderstanding. This is an Expedition funded by The Supreme Dictator, and the Government of Tarkanea. This has been in the works for several months, so I'm sure it predates your lease."

Ruperd chimed in: "I've been on site for a Month, we were most definitely here before you."

Theldin shot him a look, Ruperd resolved to be quiet.

Tanius couldn't help but smirk at the exchange. "Indeed, no one is disputing that. To be quite honest we've only just landed. But I see no reason why we can't co-exist peacably."

"Well I am afraid this is Rollis property, and--"

"And by extension, Graanid Territory, and I know you wish to expel me but that would be in such poor taste. But I am afraid this is a matter we will have to let higher authorities work out. We are on the field, but I have a Dictator who dispatched me, and you have a CEO, and i'm sure both would be displeased if we stopped work to chit chat about something we have no power to change."

"But--"

"So if you'll excuse me I would like to get back to work. Julius?"

"Listen, Mister--" Ruperd was getting mad, Theldin gestured at him to let it go.

"Julius, escort these men back to their helicopter. We've all got a lot of work to do. Thank you for dropping by gentlemen, I will be sure to keep you in mind if we need any assistance."

Julius reappeared with some people who looked definitely bigger and stronger than Theldin and Ruperd--maybe worked as bouncers before they got picked up by the military. Theldin and Ruperd returned to their helicopter in silence.

2200 hrs, Graanikep

Raman Smeeth reclined in his chair. He, and his posse of assistants and associates, were watching the television earnestly. In fact, three televisions, all with live coverage of the joint sessions of the legislature.

"Rollis, are you still there?" Raman asked to the phone, where Andam Rollis was watching the television from his corporate offices. "I'm going to put you on speaker phone."

Raman moved the phone away and pressed a button. "-air enough." came Rollis' voice.

"The Vote is about to start."

"What? I thought there was going to be some debate!"

"There was, for the past day, and all day today. A handful of progressives and a lot of Conservatives are in favor, a minority think the move is Imperialistic, and some think its just plain a bad idea. I think it can pass though, just needs a simple majority."

"The first votes are coming in."

Raman watched in silence as the Rhean legislature ticked away votes. Yeas v. Nays slowly began to appear on screen. Eventually, the television announced:

"With 65 votes YEA and 56 votes NAY, the legislation passes."

"Excellent." Said Rollis on the phone. "First one down, and that was the toughest. Conservatives don't even have a majority there."

"Getting Progressive support for this legislation was key."

"Here comes Phinnikep."

Again a pause as votes were tabulated.

"With 108 votes YEA and 13 votes NAY, the legislation passes."

"Excellent. We have enough now that we could work it through alternative means even if Virgikep doesn't approve, but that would take time." Said Raman.

"Good. I think they will approve, though, so it doesn't matter."

"Yes."

After what seemed like an agonizing wait, the Virgikep Legislative results were in:

"With 74 votes YEA and 47 votes NAY, the legislation Passes. We go now to the Premier."

As was customary, the Premier read the cumulative vote, and announced the legislation to be in effect.

"Congratulations, Rollis." Smeeth said.

"Thank you Smeeth. Call Finance and ask to talk to Cheela, she has something for you."

"Thank you." Smeeth nodded. The premier was about to speak:

"Ladies and Gentlemen of Congress, Citizens of Graanid, It is my great honor to announce to you the results of tonights vote." The Premier, Thobold Natylis, was saying.

"This measure is vital to making Graanid a business friendly environment, and ensuring the security of our interests, at home and abroad." He said to applause.

"Therefore, it is my great pleasure to announce, that with 247 votes in favor, 116 votes against, and all three legislatures passing, the bill TO ANNEX NEIGHBORING TERRITORY FOR INVESTMENT AND DEVELOPMENT has passed, and will go into effect. The Provisions of this bill include..."

Raman stopped listening, he was too busy smiling. Somewhere behind him, a champagne cork popped.

A few hours before the Graanid Annexation Vote, Silera

Dictator Eliphas drummed his fingers on the table. More and more news arrived and few were good.
"Sir, we have reports that the Rhean legislative is almsot ready to begin a vote on the annexation." said Carolia Scipe, a woman often referred to as the Dictator's right hand. At the moment she handled the stream of reports and sorted out the important news to bring to Eliphas.
"Damn that idiot. His impatience made them rush. It just means we have to push things faster as well. What are our claims?"
"We have written up a number of deeds for land areas in border territories. Agents are already gathering volunteer settlers and I believe we can set up a number of towns across the region in a few weeks. By then our grip will be secured."
"But until then, Scipe? Do we have all things ready to give us the right to roll in and settle in the first place?"
"Yes, sir. The maps of old Verkad have been properly examined. Through the kingdom we can claim about a quarter of the land, the rest we will have to deal discretely with until our settlements have been established."
"Any chance we can get hold of the central mountains?"
"We do not have more claim than Graanid. We can't remove their camps but they won't dare remove ours. It will be a race"
"Alea iacta est, then"

----

Captain Orien Tarnon looked over the lines of volunteers that had gathered outside the building. The Governor of Remos had been very cooperative when Tarnon's superiors had asked to use the building to house the colonist recruiting service. Now hundreds of hopeful had gathered, drawn by the posters and public speaker messages encouraging brave men and women to seek a new home in Tacanis Superior, the soon to be established colony. Tarnon's regiment had been one of those selected to follow and protect the settlers, something noone opposed to. They were tired and worn from long guerilla fighting against Verkadean rebels, and service in a new colony meant that they would be offered a plot of land to settle down on once their service was finished.

Behind him he could hear a speaker crackle. A trumpet fanfare blasted out.
"Citizens of the empire, important news! An historic deal between the steward to the throne, our Supreme Dictator Eliphas of Kanteron, and loyal vassal to the empire King Hokad IV of Verkad as been struck! The kingdom of Vorkad has agreed to sell the land area known as Khartakis, a fertile and rich but close to uninhabited land. Our glorious leader the Supreme Dictator has graciously accepted the deal and Khartakis has been granted entry into the empire as Tacanis Superior. The Supreme Dictator urges brave citizens to volunteer for settling in this new land. Every brave settler will be given a plot of land and the resources needed to begin a new life. Citizens of the empire, cheer for this victory!"

The people lined up outside and within the recruiting office didn't need much encouragement to burst out in wild cheers. Even Orien felt a warmth inside and straightened up in pride.

-----

Even before the announcement trucks had crossed the border. On strategic locations all over Tacania Superior the unloaded the building materials they had brought. Quickly teams of workers began construction work, setting up simple houses waiting for the arrival of settlers.

The legislation allowed only physical claims to be enforced. Sure, some housing development projects could be created, but really those companies just made themselves available.

The oil and mining companies moved first, as they were already prepared when Rollis Resourcing made its move on the mountain range. Within 24 hours, large, fenced in compounds were established, and paperwork had been filed. Rollis even went out for second helpings, elsewhere in the eastern region.

Those companies needed funds quickly, so they took loans from major banks. Additionally, they needed housing for workers, so construction companies came to build neighborhoods around camp sites. Paving companies were contracted to build roads: at least Two highways, from the suburbs of Phinnean province and Rhean province, were begun leading towards the mountains and the eastern plains region.

Agricultural companies had the cheapest job: Secure as much land as possible with physical perimeter, and they could worry about valuation later. Refining would be a secondary measure, and as people migrated to the jobs, so would services, commercial products, retail. People would follow the jobs.

But as the Graan, Lothan Marphal, read these reports, he could only think of two things: First, that the Tarkaneans had to be doing SOMETHING in response to the annexation, which would need to be enforced. Second, that this may be the defining moment of his Graanship, and his term was up in a year or less!

The Field Marshal folded his hands as he waited for a reaction from the Graan.

"Rolkin, How do you suggest we proceed?" Lothan asked.
"I have a flight crew ready to patrol the perimeter and check for any outlying settlements. I believe that is the best course of action. If the Tarkaneans try anything, they will come from the north, and we simply deploy our military and tell them to turn back."

"Deploying the military will be difficult."

"We have options available to us that will make it easier."

"Well, what about domestically? Have you seen the Papers?"

"Protestors will protest. Prices will be higher as companies spend more to evaluate the resources in Takaanis. But over time, prices will be lower. They will not be protesting forever."

"This is a venture into imperialism though."

"Is it? It was a matter of defense. Tarkanea was moving aggressively against a resource rich area, if we could not defend our corporate exclaves, then that would have shattered confidence in your leadership. You would be out of a job by now if you let the Tarkaneans have their way. Plus, there is Uranium. Do we want that in their hands?"

"No. No we do not."

"I'll get our aircraft mobilized, maybe send some ground reconnaissance."

"Please do."

Rolkin left silently, and was quickly met by Tophine Zade, Director of Intelligence. Rolkin was always a bit perturbed by how ratty the man looked, but he was the best in the field, hence the role he played.

"Well?" Tophine said.
"Ready 5 people for ops in Tarkanea. You'll want seamless integration. Try and get them into colonial areas. This is intel only, don't make a mess of things."
"We've had few Tarkanean ops not end in deaths, they will be reluctant."
"If they are scared you should dismiss them immediately. Intelligence isn't a desk job."
"Indeed."

Tophine scurried off, allowing Rolkin time to make a phone call. "Gamat, its Rolkin. I need an advance airfield in the the Northwest of Takaanis, minimum-safe from Tarkanea. How soon can you get it done?" These logistics folks were efficient.

"16 hours, 18 starting from now."

"Get it started then." Rolkin loved working with them. No questions asked, just a task and results. it was beautiful!

The town of Lerias, if you could really call it a town, was located at a strategic position near the central mountainous area, right at the edge of official Tarkanean land. While mostly made up of tents and barracks now, the process of constructing proper houses was already on its way. The first settlers had begun showing up, but mostly mining workers.

Inerus of Edane had made the town his headquarters and had directed the further colonization. Soon after receiving the report that the Graanid had set up an airbase near the Tarkanean border however, he had disappeared. Most didn't notice, those that noticed that kind of thing had a tendency to disappear as well. A new commander had arrived, Taurus Petri. He was dressed in a long, purple robe with golden detailing and around his neck hung the sign that signified him as a high priest of Tzeentch, the god of change.

Taurus looked through the paperwork Inerus had left behind while giving out quick orders to the messengers that waited just at the entrance of the tent.
"Send a message to camp B3, order them to pack up and move to camp C2. They are to close to Graanid deployments and would be hard to defend. Have we received a reply from the governor of Remos regarding more workers?"
"Yes, sir, he says he'll have the chain-gangs sent here tomorrow"
"Good, those rebel scum might as well work for their food. Send this report with the strongest encryption to this receiver. Burn the note afterwords."
"Sir, we have received a report that a Graanid spy has been captured in Caneis."
"Confirmed Graanid?"
"Well, no sir. The report states he hasn't given up any information yet..."
"Tell the commander to have him sent to Riana. They've got real experts there, and they know how to keep things, and people, hidden. Besides what is the Graan going to do, come here with his hat in his hands and ask if he could get his spies back? Ha! Oh, and send general order to all commanders to not capture any spies they find, but to inform me and keep them under surveillance. Who knows when we have need for a spy?"

As the night fell a large Tarkanean army moved quietly in the darkness. With their renowned speed and ruthless efficiency, as well as a large amount of penal labour, they quickly built up a ring of outposts surrounding the Graanid airport. Patrols moved between the camps that would continued to expand over the following days until they became proper fortified bases. Any protests would be met with the simply explanation that land belongs to Tarkanea, as it is claimed in the official colony documents for Tacanis Superior.

Using both scouts and spies the Tarkanean intelligence drew up a map of all Graanid outposts in or close to their claimed territories. Additional troops were moved towards the new colonies in preparation for a strike to force them away. The colonial guards that had already arrived were sent out to act as guards on the already established mining outposts in the central mountains. Tarkanea was ready to fight.

"Fox 2, are you seeing what I'm seeing?" Said the pilot of the Stealth fighter.
"Roger Fox 1."
"Taking images. What do you think?"
"Looks like Tarkanea is forcing their hand."
"This is Fox 1, Come in Foxhole."
"This is Foxhole, Go Fox 1."
"Are you getting these images?"
"Yep. Henhouse 1 is on the ground, we're not getting any combat. Maintain observation."
"Copy that, Fox 1 Out."

-----

Tophine Zade was unperturbed at the report.

"They got one."
"That means they didn't get 4."
"One might be enough."
"No. We told them to get information on colonization efforts. It is not like we loaded them with government secrets."
"But they have access to--"
"We have safeguards. They would lose more by killing one of our citizens than by keeping him alive. They won't kill him--If they are smart."
"Very well."

Tophine returned to reading reports from the front and making strategic recommendations. It seemed the Tarkaneans were baiting them into combat. He ordered 2 Divisions, about 20,000 troops, be sent to the Airbase. The facility was not complete, but if it was time to Dig in then who better than the military.

------

Thobold Natylis entered the Graans office to find Lothan with his head in his hands. "Uh...Lothan?"

"Thobold, good, come in. You saw the exchange, i presume?"
"Yeah, Chernovia is not pleased."
"I did the best I could. But I also fucked up."
"How?"
"Looks like this might turn military."
"MILITARY! How?"
"The Dictator is not backing down. We're not necessarily being subtle. We just annexed this land, we are setting up an impromptu airbase and deploying 20,000 troops there, thats not necessarily subtle."
"And they aren't getting the hint?"
"They aren't just not getting it, they are ignoring it. There is a LOT of motion towards the Tarkanea/Takaanis border."
"So what is the problem? How did you fuck up? Seems to me you're doing things right."
"Annexing was a bad move."
"What?!"
"I just justified to Chernovia that we're having a minor problem with Tarkanea, but all in all this is a good decision. If this turns military we won't be able to count on foreign support--at least not easily. If the Tarkaneans start winning then maybe the corporations can call in some favors. I don't want this to turn military, Election time is right around the corner."
"What about Hyperborea? Or Orissa? There are plenty of options, we aren't up the creek."
"I don't know, I just don't know. What we need is public outcry against Tarkanea, and for that..."
"What?"
"We need Tarkanea to shoot first."

-------

Field Marshal Rolkin Mas was having one hell of a day. First this whole annexation business, and now deployment of troops? Was an all out war really necessary? Especially over a Corporate dispute. About Uranium.

He had to think. On the one hand, a Navy wouldn't do much good. On the other hand...No, no, stop thinking military! We need to prevent war! he thought. He had little choice. He sent a note to the Graan requesting the opening of Diplomacy.

--------

To: Supreme Dictator Eliphas of Kanteron
From: Graan Lothan Marphal
Subject: Request for Audience

Dear Eliphas,

I Humbly request a personal audience with you, at a location of your choosing, to discuss our recent annexation of Takaanis and the opening of a Diplomatic Dialogue between us, as new neighbors.

Best Regards,
Lothan Marphal
