Hello friend,

Welcome to the archives of Renatia Nova, the third edition of the epic roleplaying franchise created by -DS- in 2008.

Over the past four years hundreds of people around the world have joined together to participate in the art of world-crafting, of collaborative storywriting, and above all epic role playing in a play-by-post environment. This forum is one of many similar realms created entirely from the imaginations of its inhabitants, an impressive plethora of crafted nations that include cultures, characters, languages, maps, as well as a whole other assortment of data entirely up to the author to synthesize.

Nation-State Play-By-Post Roleplaying (NS-PBP-RP) remains a very entertaining, intellectually stimulating, and educational experience that leaves us wanting for more. Bar none the best part of the entire genre is the fan-base, the community, and the people I've met along the way in sharing our common interest.

Renatia deserves another chance. We all deserve the opportunity to relive the world we created. Check back soon for exciting news.

Sincerely,

Freeman

From what Theldin Pharks could see, the whole area was devoid of civilization. A small mountain range poked up on the horizon, and that was where they were headed. The helicopter was noisy, but Theldin never complained when on company business. He did, however, ask:

"How long until we land?" He had to shout above the din of the rotors.
"Ten, maybe fifteen minutes." replied the pilot.

Theldin sat back and decided to listen to his colleagues.

"...Really?" Koren Marn, the Geologist, was saying, "I Don't think there is gold. Just look at the location. It is probably something like Iron or some kind of Oil deposit." He stroked his scruffy, short beard.

"No, i swear! I know a guy who was on the initial expedition." Said Gragar Lome, the surveyor. "He said they found something, and its going to be a boon for Graanid!"

"So really, you don't know much?" Came the sly response from Pilius Munn, the junior geologist, his Tarkanean accent barely showing. Koren snickered and Gragar looked mildly hurt.
((Hows the name, Mr. S? I can edit it later))

"Well, just you wait. You'll see."

"What do you think Theldin? Think we'll find riches beyond imagining?" Koren asked.

Theldin snapped out of his absent minded eavesdropping. "Oh, uh, I dunno guys. I'm just a corporate liason. I don't know much about the geography. All I know is they wouldn't be sending me if they didn't have something worth while."

"True enough!" Remarked Pilius. "I'm sure there is something worth while. Look, there's the site!"

They all looked out the nearest window. A small compound could be seen, with a few rigging materials hovering above the floodlights. The pilot began descent.

The white helicopter, with the Dual R insignia for Rollis Resourcing, settled on the dust. Theldin was first to exit, shielding his head form the dust, followed in short order by Koren, Gragar, and Pilius. Ruperd Saks was the site manager, and was there to greet them, his characteristic hardhat slightly askew.

"Welcome to the site." He said, shaking hands with his guests. Koren and Pilius seemed distracted by the relief, while Gragar was taking everything in. "Come on over to the offices, I'll bring you up to speed."

---------

"The survey gave us a pretty good look. We have a little bit of know-how as far as interpreting the results, but the reason you gentlemen are here is to look at the results, and verify them. You geologists know what to look for. Gragar, you're here because, if there is a good find--which, as you can see, there is a good indication that there is SOMETHING of value down there, we'll open up a mine and we'll need to get a camp going, housing, and build a road. Who knows, there may be more mineral-rich deposits elsewhere in this territory. Theldin, once we figure everything out, i've been told to have a chat with you about market share and investment--how to break the news to investors so as to prevent competition from flying out here and getting themselves a piece of the action. I'm told the folks up in Graanikep is going through the process of approving a large land lease, but we'll see how that goes. Anyway, what do you make of all this?" Ruperd leaned back and put his hands in his pockets.

After a few moments hesitation, Koren was the first to speak: "When do we start?"

-------------

Koren and Pilius had been sent off to work with the geological surveying equipment. Theldin didn't know much about it or how it worked--though he thought he might go and ask since that might be kind of important. He DID know about Markets and investors, and that was where his conversation with Ruperd was very rewarding. Ruperd didn't know much about the business aspect, but he picked it up quickly.

"So you see, if we make a big press deal about our find, before the legal work has gone through, this mountain will be swamped with other corporations. You'll see about twenty helicopters on the horizon the morning after, and that will make staking a claim that much more difficult--even if it does mean a brief uptick in our stocks. For the longest term benefit, we downplay the find, and then we start increasing our output and imply that this is a good find." Theldin was saying.

"I get it now, don't want to provide too much information, or we'll shoot ourselves in the foot."

"Yep. So what do you expect might be down there?"

"Well, we're fairly certain there is iron. The mountain itself is made out of shale, which might provide oil--and of course there is a high likelihood of oil being elsewhere in the territory, we just haven't scoped it out yet. We are sure there are other heavy metals down there as well, but we won't know until we either get a real deep core sample or open 'er up for drilling."

"I see. How much time does it usually take to open up a mine?"

"A Place like this? Could be a month before we get down anywhere meaningful. its a very involved process."

"I see." Theldin was taking notes. "So we want the rights to the land as soon as possible, so we can start that process."

"Yep." Ruperd said. "But, say, aren't land leases public domain? Other corporations might see that you're buying up land."

"True, but they won't know until they come here. It will spark curiosity, but if someone is already here why waste resources duplicating their work, when you can wait to see that the work has paid off. I like to call it Market Vulturism, but others call it 'shrewdness'."

There was a small commotion outside the door. "Whats going on out there?" Theldin asked.

"Looks like your geologists are coming back."

Koren rushed up to the door and pushed it open, where Ruperd and Theldin stared slackjawed at him.

"We've found Uranium."

Eliphas stared up in the ceiling as he absent mindedly drummed his fingers on his desk. Carolia Scipe stood in front of him and waited patiently. She knew from experience not to disturb the Dictator when he was thinking. The memory made her hand move towards the faded scars on her cheek by itself.

"Sure" Eliphas said sudenly. "I'll host a meeting with the Graan, oh yes. Why, he can come here to Silera, he can stand by the pillory on Blue Square and explain why he feels he has the godsdamned right to annex my empire!" with the last word he slammed his fist into the desk. "And he'll refuse and then they can't say we weren't the ones that didn't want to negotiate when we burn their cities to the ground!"

Carolia remained silent while Eliphas slowly calmed down.
"Lerias is probably a neutral enough ground, we'll set up a nice pavilion outside the walls and hold the meeting there. I have enough problems as it is without getting into a world war! Hmm, didn't we arrest one of their spies the other day?"
"Yes sir, he has been brought to Riana for interrogation."
"Sounds just like something Petri would do. I suppose you sent orders to leave him reasonably intact"
"Yes sir, I didn't trust high priest Petri. He is known to be a bit overzelous"
"Ha, that's one way to put it! We'll keep him for now, but I believe you had found more spies?"
"Two more, for certain."
"Arrest one of them and bring him to Lerias, we'll give him to the Graan as a sign of good will"
"Very well"
"Oh, and I want you to pick someone you trust and have him keep check on Petri. I don't want him to do anything stupid while I speak to the Graan"
"I will do it right away" In reality Carolia had already placed two spies in Lerias for the exact same purpose.
"I don't know what I'd do without you" Eliphas grinned towards Carolia in a way she didn't feel very comfortable with. "You may leave, I've got a message to write"

((OOC: We reached an agreement on how to deal with NPC's, and are subsequently going to retcon/handwave actions prior to this point. What we are going to do is assume the Takaanis territory has a very weak central government, and so the provinces of Takaanis (as illustrated by this map here) operate semi-autonomously, enough to negotiate lease agreements with governments and corporations. Since we (mistakenly) did not consider NPC's in the beginning of our RP, and both assumed the territory was uninhabited, we are now going to assume that some negotiations took place. As shown in the map, Graanid has slowly acquired provincial leases for a few sites, while Tarkanea has pursued a more aggressive approach, in which some legal and illegal settlements are made. Future RP will include a reasonably RP'd discussion with provincial leaders. Please PM or post in the OOC subforum if any of this is unreasonable or executed unrealistically.

We hope this makes sense. We now return to our regularly scheduled programming :D ))

Little progress had been made in two days time. The dispute remained tense, but fortunately no shots had been fired. Two divisions had been sent to the forward Airfield position, and were digging in fortifications and establishing both offensive and defensive capabilities. Aircraft were flying constant patrols over occupied and disputed territories. Corporations continued exploiting existing leases, and requests for authorization to negotiate with local authorities were constantly streaming in. The military was fully mobilized and on alert.

Such was the state of things when Lothan Marphal entered his aircraft. "Captain?" He asked the pilot, "Can you confirm for me that Rolkin Mas is already in the air?"

The captain spoke into his radio, and received a prompt reply. "Yes sir, Field Marshal is en route to Checkpoint Lorel, with full escort suite."

"Good, thank you." Lothan said, and found his seat. The two executives decided it was safest to take two separate planes, leave at different times, and not disclose which was leaving first. A third, dummy plane, had just taken off, and would go to the forward Airbase before returning (well after Lothan had landed at Lerias.)

Nonetheless, Lothan couldn't help but think that he had the upper hand. With the Chernovians supposedly appeased, and the Hyperboreans at least expressing interest, international support seemed likely. Especially now that they were no longer calling it an "Annexation" but instead "Cooperation". That is going to cause problems when all this is over... he thought. Especially now that the "Annex" meme had proliferated out of control. It could very well be the final nail in the coffin of his administration. Or my crowning achievement! he smirked.

It didn't take long for Lothan to arrive at Lerias. He saw Rolkin--presumably exchanging pleasantries, My favorite past time! he thought sarcastically. This is going to be a looong Day...

The Tarkaneans had held watching eyes on Graanid deployments, but over all Taurus Petri had mostly ignored them. He believed strongly that they were not a real problem and only existed as an excuse for Tarkaneas conquest of Tacanis. A steady stream of messages had flowed from Lerias as the commander directed the continued build up of settlements and mining camps. The local population of the area known as Tacanis superior had been resentful at first but warmed up towards the new regime as the Tarkaneans brought with them money and work and treated the locals leniently, as per order from Petri. It was useless to encourage local resistance until they were in full control he thought.

Because of this focus he wasn't very impressed with the visit of the Graan but nevertheless prepared Lerias for the delegation's arrival.

Dictator Eliphas had arrived the day before and had been given one of the few finished houses and a young local woman had been delegated as personal servant. Now he stood not far from the simple airfield that had been prepared and looked as the first Graanid plane closed in.
"Everyone travelling in separate planes and a dummy plane et cetera. Ha, one might think they don't trust us. Eh, Taurus?"
"Hm?" Taurus looked up from the detailed report of the Uranium prospecting he was reading.
"I say their security is ridiculous! Damnit Taurus, would you stay focused?"
"I am focused on the job you appointed me to" Taurus responded coldly. "and could you stop using my personal name, sir?"
"Get over it. Now they are starting to come out of the plane, wonder if it's the top dog himself"

((OOC: Expediting this to the meeting itself!))

After painstaking and tense pleasantries, some very terse and passive-aggressive jabs, Lothan, Rolkin, Taurus, and Eliphas made their way to a Meeting room.

"Well, your excellency, thank you for hosting us here." Lothan began. "My reasons for requesting we meet is to prevent escalating tensions between our nations." He gestured to the map on the wall behind them. "We have negotiated with the various and sundry leaders of Takaanis provinces, our corporations have a hold. This is clear. What is also clear is that you are pursuing encampments and such of your own. Encampments which violate our recent declaration of effective control over this territory. Granted, the process has been very rushed, I am sure you mean no offense. I have no problems with Tarkanean work occurring in Graanid territory, as long as it is through the proper channels. I must, however, protest your clear military presence."

Rolkins Turn: "Indeed, while we are sure your camps and settlements are peaceful and perfectly legal, as long as you have a military presence in Takaanis, while we have declared effective control, it constitutes a violation of sovereignty. Our reason for discussing this matter here, with you, is an attempt to prevent an outbreak of warfare, especially over something as trivial as a border dispute. We would very much appreciate if you first and foremost remove your military presence, and then we can negotiate some sort of compromise with the other settlements."

Rolkin turned to Lothan, who did not acknowledge him. He was sitting upright, looking hard at the Dictator, surely trying to gauge his reaction. Rolkin knew it would not be positive.

Eliphas listened quietly to his guests. The Graan's "your excellency" made him smirk, normally he would only be called "sir" or "dictator". Taurus did change his facial expression the least but he clenched his fists under the table.

"Frankly, sir" Eliphas said and looked at Lothan, seemingly ignoring the marshal. "I believe there must have been some misunderstanding. We have not set our foot on Graanid land, all settlements and camps have been constructed within our own territory as stated in the Tacanis purchase. It is in fact you who have built up an illegal military base within our territory, but we will not judge since things have been rather rushed and confused. As long as you leave it we'll hold no grudge against you. Any no military presence can of course be discussed, we are not unreasonable"

Rolkin Mas couldn't help but smirk. A classic territory dispute situation. Tarkanea has a sizable claim on the one hand, while Graanid claims another chunk, plus the Tarkaneans.

"I see the situation clearly, Sir. We both have what we feel are legitimate claims to the same land. I understand that this is tricky. But neither of us wants war. There is an approach that could be equitable for all."

Rolkin produced a map, and began numbering it and marking it with Red for Graanid and Blue for Tarkanea.

Posted Image

"Graanid created a camp on Territory 1 first, therefore we would be given that. You had Territory 7, 5, and 4. We are aware of your settlements on territories 12 and 10, but are willing to concede them. While we are reluctant to concede the airfield we have constructed, we will concede it if in turn we are permitted Territory 11. At this point we have some clear indication of where the borders would be drawn, and would allocate them thus. I propose additionally, due to the reluctance for military action on both of our parties, a Demilitarization of territories 12, 10, 11, 2, and 3."

Rolkin turned to Lothan, to make sure everything he was saying was satisfactory. Even though he didn't need to, they were two thirds of the executive.

"This agreement, if you find it to your liking, would be an equitable way to redistribute territory according to our current agreements with local governments, and keeps in mind both our demands."

Eliphas and Taurus looked at the map. The dictator glanced at Taurus, and the look the priest gave him confirmed that they felt the same.

"I'm afraid that we can't agree to these terms, but there is nothing that says they can't be amended." he turned his gaze to the map and pointed as he spoke.
"First of all plot 11 will remain Tarkanean. You will have to remove your airport anyway, but in exchange we will retract our claim to plot 1."
"And the demilitarized zone is out of the question" Taurus added. "If there is one it will be equally on ours and yours territory"
"Because of the importance and strategical locations of plots 1 11 we could perhaps have both completely decentralized." Eliphas finished.

Rolkin wasn't happy with the proposal, so he exaggerated that fact to give himself an excuse. He scowled at the Dictator, stood up, and said "Excuse me" and left the room.

Lothan smirked. "Listen, Instead of trying to passive-aggressively screw each other over, why don't we try and sort this out methodically. We need to remember that no matter what, there are local governments and they need to have a say in this. Without a bilateral spirit of compromise, nobody will win, and the cost will be human lives. If we do not reach a settlement here and now, that is the path you are choosing, I just want you to be aware of that.

Now: Territories that are clearly under Graanid Jursidiction is, as my counterpart said, Provinces 1, 14, 15, 17, 19, and 20. Clearly under your--legal or not--control, are 12, 10, 7, 5, 6, 4, and 2.

So it seems to me the only territories that are really open for dispute are 8 and 11, as all others would be indefensible if one or the other had it.

For this, a simple exchange would suffice. Much of our territory is only good for agriculture anyway, so i would say you've got a better deal. You keep Province 8, We'll keep province 11, forget demilitarization, at this point I just want all this to be over. We can have the agreement signed and ready within 24 hours if you'll agree to it."

Rolkin walked back in and sat down silently. He looked at the map, with Lothans most recent notes on it, and nodded.

-------
Earlier... (SIC)

Rolkin stepped out of the room and found a secure spot to make a phone call.

It was to an automated number, where he would leave a message. The number was located on a datacenter in a rural section of Phinnean Province. It would then automatically dial a specified number of the Military Offices, where the message would be relayed and the orders carried out.

For Rolkin's Part, all he said was: "Its a Lovely Day in Tarkanea, I miss home Terribly."

Several hours later, when the message was received at the designated personnel, it was decoded thus:

The Day referred to the Negotiations. The negotiations, being Lovely, really meant they were going poorly. The talks being in Tarkanea meant that the Dictator would likely begin an assault, so full mobilization would be ordered. The phrase "Miss home terribly" indicated that utmost caution would be required, in case they managed to turn the talks around.

After the orders were distributed, Naval Battle Group North set off on a patrol which included the Takaanis waters. Naval Battle group South focused its patrols on the mainland.

one division would march east towards the mountains, another would march west towards the coast, and a pair would march towards the central region. it would be a considerable amount of time before they arrived at their destinations, and the Tarkaneans may even invade before then. But at least the process was begun, and if Tarkanea began an invasion today, Graanid would be well positioned to put a stop to it.

Aerial patrols would continue as usual.

Rolkin considered how all this would take place, and then re-entered the room where Lothan was finishing his counter proposal.
