Hello friend,
Welcome to the archives of Renatia Nova, the third edition of the epic roleplaying franchise created by -DS- in 2008.
Over the past four years hundreds of people around the world have joined together to participate in the art of world-crafting, of collaborative storywriting, and above all epic role playing in a play-by-post environment. This forum is one of many similar realms created entirely from the imaginations of its inhabitants, an impressive plethora of crafted nations that include cultures, characters, languages, maps, as well as a whole other assortment of data entirely up to the author to synthesize.
Nation-State Play-By-Post Roleplaying (NS-PBP-RP) remains a very entertaining, intellectually stimulating, and educational experience that leaves us wanting for more. Bar none the best part of the entire genre is the fan-base, the community, and the people I've met along the way in sharing our common interest.
Renatia deserves another chance. We all deserve the opportunity to relive the world we created. Check back soon for exciting news.
Sincerely,
Freeman

To: Namar List From: Rupert Griffiths, Minister, Head of Diplomatic Affairs; Meridia
Mt List,
On behalf of the Prime Minister I would be more than happy to accept your invitation. It seems that we have much to discuss, not only on the matter of Chernovia but also on that global state of affairs, and how our nations can best respond. Please forward details of possible meeting times that are appropriate and I shall choose the one most suited to my current schedule.
I wish to pass on my respect for your position on the Chernovian situation, as well as my hope that this will lead to open and amiable relations between our two nations.
Yours Faithfully, Rupert Griffiths Minister
To: Rupert Griffiths From: Namar List
We have made arrangements for you at the Vercer Diplomatic Suites in Rhekep. I can receive you at Rhea International Airport in 3 weeks if this suits you, please let me know if there are any other accommodations you require.
Thank you, -Namar List
((OOC: Go ahead and skip to the conference if you like!))

Rhekep Griffiths was a portly and well proportioned gentleman of a stately disposition, a stout man of moderate girth with a thick waxed moustache taking pride of place upon his upper lip. His hair was dark and styled into an obvious combover. Some in Berovnia jokingly called him Colonel Walrus, and his image in political satire was that of an aging army officer from years gone by. The truth was quite different however, for Griffiths had never been a military man and was not of such a temperament. In fact he was a most agreeable sort, who (as was made obvious by his stomach) enjoyed the finer things in life.
He had arrived in Graanid the day before and made his first appearance to the media as he headed to his car in clothes typical to what many saw as his own eccentricity. Whether it was the cause or caused by his image in the political satire of Berovnia was irrelevant for he seemed to revel in his oddities. Dressed in a fine long coat with a hand tailored suit and waistcoat beneath sporting its own pocket watch on a golden chain. To complete the image he had a bowler hat upon his head an a pipe, which for the sake of good manners was not lit in public or inside, in his mouth. A pair of armless spectacles nestled upon his nose. He looked like he had stepped out of a political cartoon for high society in the past century rather than a modern man of political distinction and well educated pedigree.
He had come to Graanid alone, a testament not only to his abilities as a diplomat and statesman, but also to his belief in efficiency and cost effectiveness. He had come with minimal ceremony and with only the bare essentials. His one concession of course was a case of fine Brandy, which he intended to present as a state gift to the Graanid government, and another separate case which contained two bottles of Cognac which he intended to share if things went well, as his personal gift to Mr List.
Now he stood, having been welcomed and greeted by numerous people and ushered into the room where his negotiations would be taking place.

Namar followed his Berovnian counterpart into the conference room, offered him a seat, some refreshments, the usual, and then:
"So, Mr. Griffiths! Shall we begin? I believe it would be prudent to start on the issue of Chernovia. The Graanid position thusfar has been to Freeze their assets, call for an investigation and a referendum. The only result has been strained relations, and our own Chernovian assets being frozen--though I believe (and cannot say for sure) that the Chernovians have frozen less value than they have frozen themselves. If this continues, Graanid will liquidate Chernovian assets and distribute to anyone who lost funds investing in Chernovia.
The problem here lies in the fact that Graanid can not force change, only impose trade sanctions. We lack the military capacity and the international clout to make any change in Chernovia. Liquidating their assets would be the harshest move, and one with the most dangerous precedent for future foreign investment in Graanid. It is a move we would like to avoid if possible." Namar sipped some water and looked out the window, over the city and towards the Meridian Sea, before continuing.
"We appreciate your role has been consistent with our own policy. But if push comes to shove, financially speaking, I am most curious as to how you would respond."

"In the long run, so far as I understand my Prime Minister's mind, I believe he is prepared to follow a similar path. Freezing assets is not something that he or I are taking lightly and we consider that in itself to be an action of considerable risk and hostility. As you rightly point out such interference in otherwise open economies and markets would set a poor precedent for future investment. That said we are under increasing pressure from within Berovnia to act on what is seen by many as our moral obligation to stand up against tyranny." Griffiths followed List's gaze out of the window to the sea for a moment before returning his warm kindly eyes back to the Graanid Minister, "Hmmm, it is not for me to say of course how the Prime Minister will respond, however in recent days we have been discussing our options in more detail at cabinet meetings and I have to say that the outcome does look somewhat bleak."
"Militarily Berovnia is in no position to challenge Chernovia, our military is small and constitutionally bound to defend our home territories. Legally speaking without the consent of all three branches of our government we cannot take a military course of action, so like yourselves we must look to purely economic sanctions. I know for a fact that the necessary prerequisite arrangements have been made to freeze Chernovian assets, for all they are worth on the Berovnian Exchange now. The decision will be made following the outcome of this meeting, but provisionally I would say that it is extremely likely that we will have frozen Chernovia's assets in Berovnia by next week."

"I understand your position 100%." Namar said confidently, leaning forward and resting his elbow on the table. "But I can tell you that, while economic sanctions can be effective, if we are to affect change in Chernovia we need something more."
He paused to consult a document, gathering his thoughts. This next bit would be tricky:
"Here we are at the crossroads of, as you say, moral obligation and practical reality. While I am reluctant to admit Graanid defines policy on morality, if we had judged purely on the practical reality we would have remained silent on the issue. So we are at the position where we weaker states--weaker that is, than Chernovia is militarily--have tempted the beast and it is eyeing us hungrily. We can not walk away without losing credence on the international level. Nor can we tempt the beast further without receiving what could be mortal wounds.
So what are the possible outcomes? If you freeze Chernovian assets, they will be very angry. If you liquidate them, they have already hinted to us that it would be an excuse for military action. Could Chernovia field an invasion force to both our states and retain enough to defend themselves from Kobol or Hyperborea? It would be worth asking if they would support us."
Namar was becoming concerned as he speculated. It was one thing to conduct diplomacy, yet another to illustrate the poor situation you are in. He hoped the Berovnian did not think less of them for their errors.

"It seems that we are in agreement. The situation is dire, practical reality is however something that the general public, at least in Berovnia, do not think about. That is not to say they are ignorant, they simply value their own moral priorities above the practical priorities of government, this is why we have yet to act and have confined ourselves to threats and talks." Rupert ran his index finger and thumb from the centre of his moustache to the edges as if stroking it in thought for a moment, "An international coalition could be the most reasonable solution to this crisis, however I must stress that no Berovnian government has initiated military action in a foreign country in living memory. Any action will, though supported by Berovnia, not include its own servicemen unless there is an absolute need for them to do so."
"Both of our nations sit in a precarious position as a result of supporting a moral ideology and I feel we are not alone. Saltorra has already expressed its own concerns, even if Kobol and Hyperborea refuse our aid it is still worth speaking with Saltorran representatives. Chernovia would be hard pressed to fight a war on three fronts with such unrest as if faces at home."

"I find myself in agreement. I was not aware of Saltorran interest, but--" Namar was midsentence when an aid walked in. "Mr. List? Telephone for you. Very urgent."
"Can I take it here?"
"Sure, I will transfer."
Namar took the moment to explain to his guest: "Mr. Griffiths, forgive me. I do not carry a phone with me to diplomacy for this express purpose, and an aid would not come here unless it was remarkably urgent. I hope you understand."
The phone rang shortly after. Namar picked it up and listened, nodding and saying "I understand", "Yes." and "Mhmm" at varying times.
At length he returned the receiver to resting position.
"I have just received updates on the developing situation with Chernovia. I am to understand that an Ultimatum has been issued on Graanid to release Chernovian assets, there are some international coalitions in the works, and...worryingly, Discussions between your state and Quen'Tharam have deteriorated."
Namar leaned back and steepled his fingers. "If I may divert the conversation to this last point. I appreciate your assistance regarding this Chernovian Crisis, but I am afraid, in matters pertaining to the Quen'Tharam, your diplomatic style becomes a liability for Graanid. In this time we are trying to avoid making enemies, but unfortunately the deterioration of talks have alienated you from being any help regarding Chernovia. I must ask, how can you rectify your differences with the Quen'Tharam?"

"I apologise for not being properly appraised of the current situation regarding the talks with Quel'Tharam, I was aware they had hit shall we say 'rocky ground' but if they have deteriorated as much as you suggest, well I'm afraid there seems little I personally can do to make assurances. Without the proper information I wouldn't be able to make a sound and reasonable judgement..."
Griffiths did not get a chance to finish his sentence, the aide had returned this time with a message for both men.
"The Prime Minister of Berovnia, Alexander Kelvin has resigned."
"...ah, well that makes things rather more complicated than one would have liked. Forgive me Mr List, but would you allow me a few minutes to contact the Berovnian embassy and find out what is going on? Hopefully I'll be of more use to you once I have more information."

"By all means Mr. Griffiths. I am sorry to hear about your Prime Minister, please pass along my condolences on behalf of Graanid."
The world was becoming a more complicated place, Namar thought.

Griffiths left, only to return perhaps thirty minutes later. He looked a little shaken but otherwise in perfectly good form as he returned.
"My apologies Mr List for the inconvenience. I have contacted the embassy and been fully appraised, they also had the sense to give me a file containing any other information I may require. It would seem that our foreign policy is now in something of a state of flux, with Kelvin's resignation there have been calls in Parliament and among the public for a review of our foreign policy. I have a copy of Mr Kelvin's resignation here for you, not that the details are in any way a secret. Needless to say he resigned over the Chernovian issue." Griffiths handed a sheet of paper, a faxed copy of the official letter of resignation, signature and all, "On the matter of Chernovia the interim government has stated that no action will be taken against Chernovia or their assets in Berovnia. On the matter of Quel'Tharam...well there seems to be some embarrassment, I'm sure you understand, Mr Calmes, the foreign minister...former foreign minister was acting on the Prime Minister's instructions to place pressure on their government. With Mr Kelvin's resignation, well Mr Calmes made his resignation public a few minutes later. The matter is one of grave concern however the High Court have ruled that it is a matter for the new government to deal with once it is elected."
"Snap election such as these can be unpredictable, however until they are complete and the new cabinet approved I am still in a position to make some assurances. I managed to speak with the opposition representatives at the embassy, albeit only briefly and they agree that Berovnia should take a more... conciliatory stance."
