Its Your Call

Input is greatly desired. Also, if you have any suggestions on where to take the future of this board, I am open. I have been considering going to a blog format, however, if this works better for everyone, then I will keep the forum boards. Let me know what you think.

Some New Recipes To Check Out

Posted by Revord (Admin) at Apr 1 2008, 10:05 AM. 0 comments

Since we found out my wife had an allergy to wheat, we are having a hard time finding good bread. I can have what ever I want, but its frustrating buying things that I know she cant have. I want to be completely on board with her, at least least when Im around her ;).

Anyhow, we do have a bread maker, and have found some good recipes for the bread maker, as well as some other gluten free recipes. Anyhow, check out below for some easy recipes.

An Update

No, I havent forgotten about the forum. In fact, I visit it several times every week. Life has been pretty crazy lately. Those of you who have known me for a while know that my work schedule has been brutal for the last few months.

Another thing going on is my wife was diagnosed with celiac. Here is a link to a site with a good description of the disease. The only treatment for it currently is a wheat free/gluten free diet. For the last 2 weeks, my wife and I have been on this diet. I dont have celiac, however, I am completely dedicated to supporting my wife in any way necessary in the treatment of this disease. Its not fatal, however, it does inhibit a persons quality of life significantly if not treated. Since being on this diet, we have both experienced a much better sense of well being as well as increased energy, better rest at night, (or day for me :P) and a noticeable reduction in size.

So, sometime in the next week or so, Im going to add a new section to the forum specifically for gluten/wheat free recipies. We have found a wealth of knowledge on the internet, and many recipes that are absolutely fabulous. So, keep your eyes open, as well as your mind. Its really a good way to go in terms of eating. Oh, and one more thing, BBQ is still ON!

Got A New Toy

Posted by Revord (Admin) at Sep 24 2007, 10:26 AM. 0 comments

Ok, so here is the scoop. I was at the Puyallup Fair the other day (Its a big county fair around here in Western Washington) and was browsing some of the food vendors (Of course!) and found some neat stuff I picked up. I got some gourmet seasonings, and this cool tool that I am currently trying out. Ill let you know in an update how it turns out. Anyhow, its a stovetop grill. I know, it sounds cheesy, but for $30 at the fair ($20 off regular price) I thought it would be worth a shot. To see what I got Heres the link. If it works out ok, Ill post about it, as well as some recipies for it (Im sure you could use a standard grill with these recipies with some minor modifications)

EDIT:

It works good! Takes a little getting used to, but its going to be handy when its cold and rainy out (or for those of you who are back east, snowy) If you look at the picture included in the link above, there are slots. Cook meats above those slots. I cooked some boneless porkchops in the center, and it seemed like it took forever (I think that is probably why mine took longer to cook.) Even with the longer cook time, they came out pretty good. The only thing I think I wont be able to do is a brisket or pork butt. But for something that is going to be quick and easy, and relatively easy to clean up and store, this is probably one of the best spent $30 Ive had in a long time.

Anyhow, Ill include some recipes later on. Its time for us daysleepers to go to bed ;)

EDIT (AGAIN :D)

There are a couple of recipes I put in the Quick Meals Section. Honestly, these recipes are pretty easily done on a regular grill as well as the one Im currently using on my stovetop. I think the main difference is going to be the fact its more comfy in my kitchen this time of year than it is outside. While it isnt going to snow, and in Western Washington, it rarely snows much if at all, it still gets pretty cold and damp.

Oily Pasta Water

well, ive been doing this for a while, and it usually works quite well,

you add a spoonful or two of oil to the booling water, and mix it up before you add your pasta, and it keeps the noodles from sticking together. works great most days, but you gotta watch that you dont put to much, i did tonight, and the pasta was...well, "Wierd" tasting. it wouldn't mix with the sauce right, and yeah...

so be careful that you don't add to much if you use this trick

At the bottom of the segments that list the topics, there is an option to filter the age of posts displayed. To view topics that are older than 30 days (the default) just go down there and change it to 'the beginning'. That will allow you to view all the topics available in that particular segment. Ill have to go looking for a script that changes the default.

Free B B Q Grills!

For those of you (like me at the moment) who do not have a BBQ grill, I've just come across a great deal that you can't afford to miss out on -- there are stores all over the country where you can get a free Portable BBQ Grill! This is for real -- you too can get your very own free Portable BBQ Grill from any of the following fine establishments (if your local store isn't listed below, you may find that they do have the free Portable BBQ Grill available anyway, so be sure to check it out!):

A&P | Albertsons | Big Lots | Brookshire's | Costco | Food Lion | Fry's | K-mart | Kroger | Meijer | Publix | Quality Markets | Safeway | Sam's Club | Shurfine | Target | Tops | Vons | WalMart | Winco Foods | Winn-Dixie | and many others!

I especially like the higher shelf which is great for keeping the kids' hot dogs warm while you're finishing up the adults' burgers or steaks! Just make sure to get the plain metal grills, if you can find them ... the plastic-coated grills don't last as long, and they tend to make the food taste a bit odd!

I am in the process of packing in anticipation of moving by the end of June. I havent found a place yet, so I probably wont be posting content as frequently as I have been. Please feel free to add recipies, or even ideas you have. I will be on daily, or every other day, but adding content is going to reduce drastically until the move is done.
